OK, this place is amazing! So far, it is my favorite stop. Great little old city below the castle and we are staying rigt in the middle. Climb up the castle and see the Alps in the distance. Thee is a little river running through town and all these cafes right along side of it. Every street looks lie a postcard. Can't believe so few pople have heard of it here, but chances are Americans will discover it soon enough more than they have already. Tomorrow we are off to the mountainside town of Bled with its picturesque views. Pretty exited to get out and see the countryside a bit. Anyway, may have found my retirement spot! ... read more

After a lovely drive across Italy from Nice, France, we arrived in Slovenia at the Njoki Festival in Ajdovscina. It is a small town, and the address for the festival literally read “center of town.” The festival consisted of an outdoor stage at the foot of an impressive range of mountains and a small campground, where most of the festivalgoers seemed to be staying. We stayed there for two days, one night in a student dorm type facility. The night we arrived was the first night of the festival, and Marky Ramone, drummer of the Ramones, was headlining. He had a young band and singer, and they charged through about 25-30 Ramones classics in a 90-minute set. The next day I spent some time at the pool, which appeared to be the main attraction in town. ... read more

We arrived in Ljubjana and Carmen directed us to a closed off area with steel bollards blocking the small cobble stone streets. Obviously, changes have been made to the city and the old part of the city has been closed off to traffic other than to cyclist, skaters and pedestrian traffic. We ended up trying to work our way around the traffic road under the castle by way of the tunnel and came out on the other side of the old city but still couldn't get into the restricted area because of the bollards. Di managed to ask at another hotel and got direction and we ended up coming in exactly the same road that Carmen had brought us BUT this time the bollard in the road were dropped and we could drive in. The hotel ... read more

The last few days I have gotten to see more of the country side in Solvenia. On Sunday we went to a small village and saw a small castle and its ruins and we walked around a bit and then we went and saw this spring, this by far was the highlight of my trip. When you first got out of the car at the spring you looked up as saw the jagged outline of the Alps which were cover in snow, but you could not see all of it because there was a storm coming. As your eyes came down from the top you began to see the lush green color of spring which is everywhere. In the valley that is surrounded by mountians there is a small restaurant and a small, cute chapel. But ... read more

Yesterday we went into the city and I got to see the Market, this was so cool. There were so many fresh vegetables, flowers, and homemade goods. This alone made me want to move to Slovenia, but then I remembered I do not speak and word of Slovene (yes it is a language), that alone would make my life a little difficult!! Well after, Mojca fixed my favorite meal rice with mushroom sauce for lunch, we went to a wedding...Mojca was playing the piano for her choir who was hired to sing for the wedding. This was very interesting for me, first of all it was a catholic wedding in Slovene. I did not understand anything, the order of the service is similar to Espiscopalian, however the flow of the prayers are much different, it took ... read more

I arrived in Ljubljana, Solvenia today. (Quick geography lesson, Solvenia is below Austria and was formerly part of Yugoslavia (sp). I woke up at 4.20 to be at the airport in Cologne by 6 am.....it was way too early especially since I went to bed at 1 am. I flew to Graz, Austria and then took a train to Ljubljana because there are not any direct flights from Cologne to here. The traveling part was not all that bad, the part that was not fun is that I am really tired. However, I will be here for a few days so I can catch up on sleep. I am staying in Ljubljana until the 11th with my old roommate from Austria (Mojca and her family). Out of all my travels I have never had sooo much ... read more

I arrived in Ljubljana today, for the first time in three years. Being back is really strange, the city has changed and yet it is the same. New people, old people, new smells, old smells. Places that I remember, places that have come, places that no longer exist. I am staying with João in a big flat in Slovenska. It is quite an inventars place. The people living here are rather artistic in one way or the other, or so I heard as I have yet to meet them. But the place certainly gives an idea of those who inhabit it. It is dirty, but clean, it is exciting to walk around - taking a notice to all the little oddities in each corner. What might be most out of the common way is that except ... read more

Hallo allemaal!

Is there anything better to do on your two weeks off than go for a trip? No there is not. Having no exams, no obligations at work just make me go for a trip somewhere. A year before I met Jasmina from Ljubljana at a voluntary project in Turkey with a lot of other great people, but somehow we stayed in contact the most, probably because of the rich common history and novadays happenings at this region, language and other things. In Sptember, the year before, she came to Belgrade to visit the three of us from Serbia who participated in the former project. Now I thought it would be good to revisit her and Slovenia. The train was taking me directly to Ljubljana, through Zagreb and took me around 8 hours. As soon as I ... read more

So.. in case youre frightened right now - here they spell the name of the country Slovenija... a particular souvenir was written with the S somewhat obscured, leading Simon to belive it actually said "Love Ninja". Im not sure it acurately describes the country, but I like it! To get on with the story, this country is BEAUTIFUL!! Very very story book, fairytale castles, mountains, rivers, gorgeous little villages, and crazy motorways! The centre of Ljubljana is gorgeous - a river lined with beautiful old buildings, bars, cafes, restaurants and ice-cream stands, so as you can imagine, it has been very tough. Weve had a few days here, so it has been nice to take a breath after racing around. Yesterday we (well, Simon) hired a car and we headed out to see some phenomenal ... read more
