Being in Oslo was probably Not like travelling in Norway. The West coast is absolutely beautiful and the smaller towns look gorgeous. Unfortunately we only saw a video of these places when we visited the Maritime museum. Oslo is, however a great city to explore. It is compact, pretty, it has a well laid out city plan, a lovely harbour and many inteseting places to see. Instead of detailing everything we did which would be rather dull, instead I will list all the things we noticed about Oslo so you can get a feel of it. * It's really expensive and we couldn't afford to eat out ( and keep in mind we live in London which is already a very expensive city) You can eat Norwegian food like pastries with vegetables, cheese and pesto or ... read more

Oslo had quite a large main station which seemed to be housed in a number of separate wings, one of which included a shopping mall whilst others included cafes and various eateries. There was also a direct connection to the metro which we took to the Bed and Breakfast we were staying at out in the suburbs near a forest. We bought a 24 hour public transport ticket in Oslo which entitled us to free travel on the metro, trams, ferrys and buses for a full 24 hours. It was better than Melbourne's day tickets which expire at 3am the next day. Needless to say we made use of all four public transport modes. After walking around the CBD area on the evening of our arrival we eventually chose a place to eat at which turned ... read more

On Friday afternoon I hopped on the train to Trondheim -- just a 6.5 hour train ride and with wonderful views to boot! And while most everything in Norway is very expensive, my early purchase train ticket only cost 199 crowns (about $35). Pretty amazing! At this point I realized I had forgotten my camera battery charger back at the hotel in Oslo so, alas, I began to conserve on the photo taking. I stayed at a hotel in Trondheim on Friday evening and was able to spend several hours on Saturday walking around the city. I especially enjoyed walking along the river that run thru Trondheim, a really beautiful city and my favorite in Norway. As it happens, it was Saint Olaf's Festival Days in Trondheim (see http://www.olavsfestdagene.no/olfe/english) so that place was bustling with activity. ... read more

Well, I created a three or four more blogs entries but hadn't officially posted them yet when TravelBlog encountered a few technical difficulties. So I haven't been able to retrieve those entries nor was I able to create any new entries for a few days. But now that I've run out of technical excuses, I thought I'd finish up with blog. So here we go...... read more

Like omgz I can't speak Norwegian so I can't really figure out how to upload my photos. Sigh. Never fear, gentle readers, I will put up pictures and stories sooner or later. Worst case scenario, I do it all at home....most likely I will do it all at home, I won't be in English-speaking countries any longer. Things are good for me here....and looking up, now that I'm headed for Stockholm. At this time, I am now finished with the Irish and Norwegian leg of my journey and ready for more Nordic adventures. But mostly, I'm ecstatic about Wacken. Woo!... read more

Despite the weather predictions for some rain today, we are happy to report that we had fantastic weather -- mostly sunny and perfectly temperate. Nancy had to deliver some of their textbooks to the university today so we both got up early and took the t-bane (like a metro/subway) up to the University of Oslo, more specifically the to the offices of the Oslo International Summer School. OISS is a 6-week summer school program for intensive Norwegian language as well as other course offerings in many subjects, some in Norwegian, some in English. I enrolled in this program a few summers ago but came up short with arranging such a large amount of time away from my job during the summer. But I hope to take one of the language courses in the future and spend ... read more

What is a person to do when it seems very much like morning at 3 AM local time? Get up and get bloggin', of course! My day started a bit early but was backed up with a nice afternoon nap. Here are a few of the things we did in between... Having just wrapped their own tour of Norway with Pacific Lutheran Univ, Nancy's parents joined us today just after noon. Nancy is here on a working vacation this week and last, so Tina, her grandparents and I fended for ourselves for the afternoon -- rather well I might say. Later in the evening an old friend, Siri, stopped by the hotel with her partner Christin -- to fetch Siri's nearly lifetime supply of American shampoo and to treat Nancy and me to a little utepils ... read more

Nope, we didn't get lost in the city of Oslo -- just have been busy seeing some sights. I'm backing up a few days to add some promised photos and perhaps a little commentary. BTW, I love to get feedback so comment to your hearts content right here on the blog if you are so inclined. Nancy has her own blog going in a parallel cyberuniverse -- you can find it at www.norsknett.blogspot.com . Note: For some reason the photos on this page are a bit further down -- scroll down to see.... read more

July 22st, 2007 Oslo, Norway Well as luck would have it, the last port was almost the best. The ship stops minutes from the main castle and the hop on, hop off bus was one great loop of the town and we saw it all. First stop was at tante Carmen’s suggestion the Vigeland outdoor park and museum with 225 brass sculptures of life from birth to death through naked bodies: absolutely spectacular. Hop back on and we rode to the Viking ship museum, again a good suggestion, just beautiful. We then rode the loop and stepped off to see the votive ships at the Oslo cathedral- which was closed! We walked the pedestrian mall, bought sandwiches and a beer and picnicked beside the Palace. We walked past the city hall and found the Norwegian ... read more

My room mates last night turned out to be a guy from Belgium...who's girlfriend was sleeping in the girls dorm!?!? They must be REALLY christian over there! I never could figure their reasoning for that. Then there was a mysterious adidas duffel bag sitting beside the one bed and a mysterious pair of shoes down there as well. I found out later that there were two IRISH guys who were staying there. I remarked how it seemed that they were packing light, to which I was told that they only came to Oslo for ONE NIGHT to go out drinking! I know the Irish are supposedly heavy drinkers, but to actually justify spending ONE night in Oslo just to go out boozing...it struck me as very odd. All that aside, I knew what to expect ... read more
