Oslo Really Is Expensive Everywhere we’ve been in the last few weeks we’ve heard the same thing when we mentioned our upcoming trip to Norway, “Norway is really expensive!!” The guys who fitted my new backpack in Copenhagen recommended renting a car in Sweden because, “it’s twice as expensive in Norway.” The girl behind the hotel check out desk in Helsinki said, “…even a beer is really expensive in Oslo.” By time we actually arrived here I was completely freaked out that everything would be immensely expensive. I even had talked to Kel about it because I figured that some of the places we’d stayed must have measured up. How expensive can it be in comparison with the richness of Dubai?? Well, the reality is that Norway is expensive. To give some idea of what ... read more

What I thought was going to be a quiet night last night, was in fact anything BUT quiet. I returned back to my room to find two travellers from Finland. Kristian and Antti had completely unpacked everything they brought with them all over the room. Both of them are musicians, Kristian is apianist for the Helsinki National Theatre, so conversation was quite interesting. They both have exactly two weeks off and decided in the wee small hours of last saturday that they would take a last minute, anything goes trip through central and northern norway. Antti hadn't realized the plan was serious until Kristian parked in front of his place. This led to the hastily packed bags. They brought with them a 40 oz. of some Finnish whiskey...and a 24 pack of Carlsburg beer and ... read more

As time passes on here I am slowly starting to feel the wrath of "walking" everywhere. I know that public transportation is THERE for that simple reason, however, I've only got a limited amount of time in certain places...so usually an idea to visit a particular location will just 'pop' into my brain and before I can really figure anything out...I'm heading in that direction. I think that I would waste more time waiting for that particular bus to come, then it would take for me to walk there. It's that sort of mindset that has led me to have tired, achy feet near the end of the afternoon. That aside, I'm pleased to announce that mr. sunshine has finally shone down here in Norway...sad thing is that I was wearing generally warm clothes thanks ... read more

I keep hearing about the HOT, HOT weather that you are all having back home. (Edmonton area that is) Well, I'll be the first to ask you if I could PLEASE have that! Out of the 2 weeks that I've been travelling, I think I had rougly 4 1/2 days of sunshine, in which 1 day was excellent (my day in Åraksbø). I'm not complaining, trust me, I'm quite loving my time in Norway and from my first half day in Oslo...going to be quite good. HOWEVER, some sunshine would be GREAT! I caught the express bus in Kristiansand and made it to Oslo by 12:30pm. The sky was slightly overcast and I had a bit of a walk ahead of me with my thick backpack and daypack plastered on me. At this point I'm ... read more

Although I had been to Oslo once before, more than a decade ago, Meghan and I managed to see and experience so much that I felt I was visiting an utterly new city. On day one, between thundering downpours, we explored central Oslo on and around Karl Johans Gate, the main drag (the axis between the central train station and the palace). A particular highlight was seeing Edvard Munch's "The Scream" in person. But it was the second day, Meghan's first full one in Norway, that was the grand tour. With an absolutely beautiful sunny day awaiting us (a whole new world after the rain of the day before), we ventured first to the RÃ¥dhus to see its dramatic interior murals and then over to the Akershus Slott (Castle) with its panoramic views of the ... read more

It's been a day of reorganising and repacking so that all four of us are equipped for the journey through four more countries and so we are equipped for the "Wedding of the Century". Chris and I walk around to the pizza shop opposite Sofienberg Park to fetch lunch. In the afternoon we all get a cab outside the apartment to take us to the ferry terminal for our overnight passage to Denmark.... read more

Today Chris went out doing outdoors stuff with friends - rappelling etc. We all met up at Glen and Trine's place for dinner. Toby, Alli, Angas and Espen were there for a while. Then we had an amazing meal of local crabs and prawns. The crabs were a new exercise in dining. We stopped when Christer had finished the last of the prawns, then topped it off with gateaux made by Trine during the day. Caught a taxi home (after the wine, cognac etc. - alc. limit here is 0.02) - What's dearer the taxi or the fine? Got off the taxi when it had got to $520 NOK (about $AUD104) Over the limit drivers here lose their license!!!... read more

Howdy, We have finally got to Oslo. I would like to fill you in, since our last blog. Wednesday evening, the weather was rainy in Copenhagen, but we still decided that we should go to the Tivoli gardens in central Copenhagen. This place is a really fun amusement park. Heather has told me that this is where Walt Disney got the inspiration to start Disneyland. While a bit old fashioned, it still has a lot of class to it. It has nice restaurants, fun rides and a nice atmosphere despite the rain! We had a look around. They have a cool looking rollercoaster and a ride where they bring you up 50 metres and drop you down all the way, well nearly. Very scarry!!. We wanted to hold down our dinners so we didn't bother. ... read more
