My muddy old bike was still muddy and old-looking when it arrived at Amsterdam airport. Austrian Air treated it a bit better than Royal Air Morocco did which was a relief. My sister Rose was waiting for me at the airport, we then jumped on the good old Dutch train system: bike, bags, tent and all and headed north. We spent a day with family in Zwolle and then went up to Friesland where we stayed with more family and celebrated our grandfather´s 80th birthday. It was held on a boat with bar/restaurant on borad, 'the Fresian Queen' (Steve, you know the one), which toured along the Fresian canals. We had a merry old time and with plenty of supplies on board, things went well. Following, I spent more time with other family members further south ... read more

So, since I have last written, a few new things have happened. Not much happened last week during the week, but I had a long weekend this past weekend, and got to do a lot of really cool things. On Friday we had a tour of Beethoven’s birthplace right here in Bonn, and then went to a “Beethovenfest” concert. The music was nice, but it wasn’t his best stuff that they played, and though classical music is good, I like it much better as background music while I’m doing other things. On Saturday I slept in, and then my Host-father took me on a small tour of a few cool places here in Bonn. On Sunday, I woke up early, and went to some more cool places around Bonn with both my host parents. First we ... read more

Another beautiful day!!! I hope we don’t get too used to it! We decided to spend the day in Maastricht, which was billed in our guidebook as the ‘gem of the south’ (of the Netherlands). Eric (Jonathan's cousin who arrived yesterday to stay with us for a week) was excited, I think, to explore a small Dutch town and the girls were excited to have someone with us on one of our travels. We had to change trains in Liege, but each leg of the trip was only about ½ hour long. We got to Maastricht at about noon. We took a pretty walk from the train station across the river and lunched in front of a huge cathedral. It is a really pretty little town. We decided to wander to St. Peter’s Fort which was ... read more

Cycling from Brugge to Maastricht was a breeze, literally, a nice strong hot tail wind blowing us across the flat plains, giving us a false sense of confidence in our abilities! We lost count of the border crossings as the border between Belgium and Netherlands is somewhat fluid and undefinable. The roads in both countries are perfectly designed for cycling, every road caters for cyclists (and cars give way to cyclists!) but the most impressive thing was crossing under the river into Antwerp where we had to use a special lift for cyclists, then cycle under the river to the other side. The campground just outside Maastricht where we are staying is more like a little community, well kept little chalets amidst the forest setting, and I woke up to red squirrels chasing each other through ... read more

I thought I'd do sort of a summary post to cover the past 5 days since Carnival ended here, before we move on to Brussels for our date with Nelly Furtado. We haven't had any incredible, major, exciting adventures, but we have been having a good time just hanging out in one place with our new international dorm buddies and pretending that we actually had a home for once. Wednesday was the first day of Lent, thus, saw the end of Carnival. Darn. Instead of waking up at 1pm to make plans for a night of costumed adventures, I woke up at 1pm to Phoebe and Ellen asking me the question, "So, Jess, what are you going to give up for Lent? We're giving up processed sugar!" Uh... yah. Me, give up sugar for FORTY days? ... read more

Well, today is the last day of Carnivale and the last day before Lent. Ellen and Phoebe are going to give up refined sugar. I'm not. Haha, but I can still enjoy the carnivale partying! Last night was a bit tame, but BOY was last night fun! I don't really know how to describe the joy that is Maastricht Carnivale, particularly when coupled with the amazing Phoebe Friesen and assorted international friends, but I'll describe a few adventures and hopefully give you a small glimps into the past 48 hours. So, after sleeping in till 1pm after our marathon day of travel (sooo nice. Just like the good ol days of spending endless nights at Phoebe's house!) we got up, made some pancakes, borrowed 4 bikes from various friends, and set off--dutch style--into town to get ... read more

This is to be a super short entry because I'm missing some of the amazing partying currently going down here at my friend Phoebe's dorm, but I wanted to let everyone know that Derek and I DID make it to Maastircht, FINALLY, at 12:24am, after 5 trains, over 14 hours of travel, and every connection full of uncertainty. One thing's for sure, internet train schedules cannot be trusted, and neither can the schedules published in train stations or even those provided on the train itself. From now on, we'll get all our info directly from the train info people. It doesn't matter, though, we made it! And in one day, too, which was important because of our limited days of travel with our railpass. I'll do a proper entry later, but Carnivale here is AMAZING!!! We ... read more

Think of craziness in the streets (not a violent craziness - just people having fun in costumes craziness) - The picture in your mind should be Carnaval in Maastricht. This Carnaval brings out all crowds and all kinds of costumes as you can see in the pictures. Many celebrations of Carnaval worldwide are known for their parades, Maastricht's Carnaval is known for its elaborate costumes. Some families work on theirs all year.... read more

Holy buckets. I can't believe we are cleaning up the apartment, and getting things ready for our final inspection already! Our time here is winding down, and it's quite sad. I am done teaching preschool, I have a week of observations and hanging out left. One of the little girls during circle time raised her hand, and when I called on her, she didn't really have anything to say. She stammered for a little while and finally said, "umm, I think I love you." Heart wrenching. But the last few weekends have not gone with out some fun. I went to the Netherlands with Carol, Ed, Bev, Chozy and Jezmay. We went to Volkenberg to see a Christmas market that is in these caves under a fortification. Sounded pretty cool, so Bev made all the arrangements ... read more
