Yet another overcast day today in Maastricht, & probably the coldest day since I've been here. However, that didn't stop me from going out & seeing some things today. My first stop this morning was the Basilica of St. Servaas. I've posted pictures of the OUTSIDE of the church, but I figured that since it's so old, the interior has to be just as (or more) magnificent than the exterior. I couldn't have been more right. Visitors have to pay 3,80 euros to gain entrance into the church & the church's treasury. I first went into the treasury. It houses a lot of artifacts & relics from throughout the church's history -- there are even relics which date back to the time of St. Servaas himself! (Keep in mind that he died in 384 AD!) After ... read more

It was another rainy day today in Maastricht. Maastricht experiences very similar weather as the rest of the Netherlands: damp and wet. It's a considerably moderate climate, and it rains more frequently in the winter than during the rest of the year. Interestingly enough, Maastricht is considered to be the "sunniest" city in Holland! The temperature range for the winter is from 33-49 degrees Fahrenheit; for the spring is from 39-66 degrees; for the summer is 60-73 degrees; & for the fall is from 37-66 degrees. Since I love history so much, & I think that Europe is so fascinating simply because of the antiquity that can be found here, I decided to use today's blog as a mini-history lesson on the city of Maastricht. :) It has been argued that Maastricht is the oldest town ... read more

So last night, I finally had my first experience with the Maastricht nightlife. Adnan & I headed to an Irish pub called The Shamrock on the Brusselsestraat which is considered a "student" bar. However, neither one of us realized that when we walked in, we'd probably be the oldest people in there. In the Netherlands, there isn't really a legal drinking age (although you have to be 16 to buy beer). That being said, EVERYONE in there was either a teenager or in their very early twenties. It was very uncomfortable because we felt like the old creepy people that are trying to relive our "glory days" by hitting up a youngin' bar. Oh well. The place was really nice, & it caters to Americans & Brits so English was spoken everywhere. The main Dutch beer ... read more

Today was an interesting day, for sure. I actually made some new friends! (Yay!) Both from Barcelona & are in Maastricht studying Economics. They're so incredibly nice. They just got here yesterday, so I went around with them today to help them find all of the things that they still needed (like towels, sheets, etc.). One of our stops was the cell place. Since they both had European cell phones, all they had to get was Dutch SIM cards in order to get a Dutch number & be able to call locally for pretty cheap. Apparently, however, American phones are blocked so my Blackberry wouldn't have worked anyway. (Plus, it wasn't like I was going to take out the SIM card I had in there since I'm already paying so much to be able to get ... read more

I managed to get up at 10:30 am today! Yes, that's correct "am" as in "ante meridiem." Shocking, I know. It's amazing what all can be accomplished when you don't spend 12 + hours in a state of unconsciousness. First, I went to get my photo taken for my Dutch VISA. It was going well until I confused the photographer who thought I needed a photo for a VISA to the States. So I had to explain that I'm a US citizen & need a photo for a Dutch VISA. Apparently they're 2 different sizes. Unfortunately, I didn't realize the mistake until after he printed the first set. So I have some professional photographs that serve no purpose. My VISA picture looks like a mugshot because I wasn't allowed to smile. Apparently hair has to be ... read more

I had, yet another, late start again today. (I don't think this time it was my fault. I didn't fall asleep until after 4 because somebody kept ringing me to get in last night. I guess maybe I should meet my neighbors in case it was one of them that locked themselves out last night & needed in. Not like I knew how to work the security thing anyway to be able to let them in... haha). First thing I did once I got up was go SHOPPING! Not shopping for the necessities in life (i.e. groceries, yuck), but shopping for clothes that I probably didn't need, but whatever. I love Europe for the sheer fact of the winter sales in January. I managed to get a coat & a cute top for the equivalent of ... read more

This whole jetlag/sleeping disorder/insomnia/sheer laziness that has consumed my life continues to plague me. Once again, I refused to get out of bed until the early afternoon. Hopefully I'll shake that soon. Essentially I didn't leave my apartment at all today (other than to take out the garbage) simply because it was raining coupled with the fact that I needed to crank out some of this independent research project that I need to complete for Professor McNeal. (It's exciting to be me, I know). Oh well. Despite the fact that I have no new adventures to talk about, I didn't want to slight my Mom from being able to keep tabs on me in the virtual world, even after we talk on Skype for over an hour. :) (Love you, Momma). Many people have been asking ... read more

I managed to sleep until 1:00 PM today (& that includes me hitting the snooze button about 5 times before finally dragging myself out of bed). This jetlag business is NOT my friend. Despite my late start, I actually was able to accomplish some things today. First, I went back to the grocery store. I'm becoming quite the pro grocery shopper. (Please read that with sarcasm). However, HOPEFULLY I managed to buy proper milk this time (instead of that disgusting buttermilk crap that I bought the last time!) I also got some other things that I needed, & it wasn't a TOTAL disaster, anyway. I also managed to ask for trashbags at the cash register. I tried doing it in Dutch, but the cashier just stared at me so I just asked her again in English, ... read more

So today I got better about sleeping in. I got up around noon & felt pretty good. However, I definitely could have kept sleeping for so much longer. I woke up partly on my own initiative (to get my body back to regular hours) & partly because there were loud drumming noises. Since Carnaval starts on February 11, there was a "preview" parade on the Market Square in front of my building. There were "marching bands" & people in costume & essentially every bar/cafe was PACKED with people. A Heineken beer cart was serving beer on the square & it was packed, too! Definitely something to see. The costumes are pretty ridiculous. It's like American Halloween, but multiplied by about a million! It's sheer craziness. Everywhere you went, there was a band of 5-7 musicians playing ... read more

I'm blaming it on the jetlag, but it could quite possibly be just a side-effect of extreme laziness, but I didn't get out of bed today until 3:00 PM. YIKESSSSS! I'm fully aware that that was a total of 14 straight hours of sleep, & yet I could have continued to sleep if I didn't drag myself out of my nice little IKEA bed. Because my day was essentially wasted, I didn't do too much exciting this afternoon. First, I went to try to find the law school. It's pretty close to where I am & semi-easy to find (despite my aimless wandering for about 10 minutes because I missed a turn the first time). The school itself is massive (& it has a tower which is pretty cool). It's way cooler than Advantica, that's for ... read more
