As I'm on the train from Brussels to Maastricht, I realize what an incredibly exhausting day today has been. However, the adrenaline is pumping because I want to get to Maastricht without a hitch. The flight from Dulles to Brussels was LONG, & we didn't take off for an hour after we were supposed to because United forgot to load a thing of luggage. Once in the air, it went well. I watched The Informant (so happy I didn't spend $8 to see that at the movies!) & I played some Mario on Nintendo DS. The lady sitting next to me only spoke Spanish so needless to say, we didn't talk other than for me to ask her to let me out to use the restroom. Considering the only things I can say in Espanol are ... read more

Hallo alleemaal! This is my first entry after arriving in Europe, and a lot has happened so far. I would probably be able to remember more, but I have been without internet until now. It's amazing how lost we are without internet, for only three! 3! days. Anways, we left Portland at 12:00 noon, and took a nonstop flight to Amsterdam. It was kind of a dissapointing flight, because I could hardly sleep at all, knowing that it would doom me once we got to Holland, which we arrived in at 7:00 AM! with a whole day to go!!! jet lag mucho mucho sucks...and im still not over it...anyways, we get through customs very quickly, and hit the most important stop in the Schipol Amsterdam Airport....BURGER KING! just kidding...only Tiffany did that....and it was nasty too...but ... read more

Bonjour et Hallo, As some of you know, I can be a bit of a masochist at times. I guess I should put that in context first. I try to see as much as I possibly can when I’m travelling and I am beginning to run out of time in Belgium so I woke up very early (the day after visiting Vimy Ridge) and joined by room mates Cris and Mirjam for a trip to Maastricht and Tongeren. We slept on the train most of the way to Liege, where we would have to transfer trains. We had a bout 20 minutes at the station, which was great for me because the station was designed by my favourite architect Santiago Calatrava. It is a flowing structure; bright surfaces, glass and very welcoming. I was in paradise ... read more

Zbunjene i mrtve umorne, jedva se dovlacimo do drugog sprata, gde nas docekuje prostrana soba, zajednicko kupatilo, plazma tv i adsl ... read more

Prologue: In the beginning. There was an idea, voiced by a woman on a particular terrace at the “onze lieve vrouwe plein” Maastricht. Heard by a man whose initial reaction was a mix of opposing emotions. Fear was replaced by opportunity, opportunity replaced by worry, worry by possibilities. And although no decision was made at that instant, it was the start of a journey to lands at the far reaches of the world, and one step further. For after a week or 2 of careful deliberation the answer was “Yes”. Obviously the man in this story was me, the woman, Ilse and the idea, well. It is difficult to determine the true nature of such ideas. For an idea is only sometimes the end result, more often a pause before it continues somewhere else and always ... read more

Follow me to colorful faces, leprechauns and wolfs, pirates and batman, popes giving out condoms and along the yellow brick road that is the carnival of Maastricht! Oh and after you had a look at the photos on this website and realized your life would be more complete if only you saw a little bit more - follow this link to see more photos: http://picasaweb.google.com/dkruchkoff/MaastrichtCarnivalNetherlands210209To220209?authkey=yxFP-Pg1RIE&feat=directlink. Carnival Maastricht was crazy. And good. Both crazy and good. The night of Friday 20, February 2009 I took a train after work to Nijhmen. Nijhmen is in the south of the Netherlands and is considered to be the oldest city in the Netherlands and celebrated its 2000th year of existence in 2005. A lot of the old buildings have been reconstructed as it was bombed by friendly fire by the ... read more

This will be my last blog: I arrived in Holland a couple of days ago. On my last Saturday in New Zealand I had a really cool goodbye party (see pictures). Then I started packing, which was quite hard, because I had way too much stuff! So I gave my flatmates about half my wardrobe (okay I’m lying now, it was more like a quarter) and just got my suitcase to close… The night before I left, my flatmates gave me a beautiful picture frame with some pictures of all of us, which they had secretly printed. They are so sweet, I am really going to miss them! Unfortunately, the trip back home did not go very smoothly. There were cyclones in Hong Kong, so we could not land there, and we had to make an ... read more
