Went to see the relatives for a very long weekend with my parents. We stayed at Vaals - a town near(ish) Maastricht in a holiday park. It had a pool and sports stuff to do. Took all of Friday to get there - thank god for Ipods. On Sat we visited Maastricht where I discovered a Miffy shop - me and my mum spent ages in it! On Sun we went to my dad's home town and went to church and looked at my Opas grave stone. We had a big family lunch. Not speaking dutch I was a bit left out!! Played squash and went for a swim with my mum when we got back! Son Monday we visited some villages and went to see my Aunt who is in a home for people with ... read more

We're still here in Holland at the same camp site. Its getting hotter by the day but we've heard there might be a thunder storm tonight.............believe it or not we'd like one!!!! There were more crazy people in Holland the other day doing a 70km walk, it marks the day the village was founded..........then they get drunk!! Robbo, seen a bit of the footie and how dare you think Fred might not make it. We haven't had many hills so far though. We got the messages from A Jen & Ragz mum and dad just in case you were wondering. Provided we can pack away after / during a thunder storm we'll be leaving here tomorrow heading for Luxemburg, still undecided which part but its so small I'm sure we'll find somewhere. Lush Guys, hope the ... read more

So here we are in Holland!!! 4 countries in one week thats not bad going (don't forget we drove through France) We are heading for a campsite east of Maastricht. Never mind the campsite we couldn't even work out which way to go on the N278 when we were back in belgium we realised it was the wrong way. The conclusion is that our map is rubbish and doesn't have half the places on we think it should. Anyway we made it. Its another lovely campsite with lovely views over the country side (oh yeah we must've found the only section of Holland that isn't flat) and its has an outdoor pool. The village near where we are staying is Gulpen which is lovely and quiet, except for today there are about 1000 cyclists doing some ... read more

We left Amsterdam on the train as we had been warned about the diffeculty of hitchiking in the Netherlands and arrived in Maastricht at 2pm. After a lot of searching we managed to find a relatively cheap hostel on a boat called - the Botelboot. The cheapest accomodation in Maastricht (still not that cheap) it serves as a place of residence for waifes and strays. We got talking to one who then followed us on our walk around the town which is very pretty and quite similar to Durham. He came up with some mad stories about how one of his friends had two backpackers staying with him and they turned out to be KGB agents who killed his friends with his own TV and vaccum cleaner. Also how Holland didn't exist and how he had ... read more

at this point i have decided that joel (www.travelblog.org/bloggers/joelstern) will put all the things we actually see and do in the next few months and i will list the madcap adventures that we have. and probably some of the stuff we do too. (anyone who has read the bracketed bit at the start of amsterdam section will realise the chronological flaw here but just run with it ok) we arrive in maastricht and a new persona is born- Ruud van der Row. the reasons for this are as follows, i enjoy doing a very bad dutch voice, something along the lines of the "schttopp- this beer is not ready yet" grolsch advert. its funny, honest. anyways, more digression, you will get used to that, i do it a lot, it drives people i know crazy. see ... read more

Hey everyone, Things are going well, with the house and with me. My bruises are starting to go away, I'm not super-tired anymore, and I'm having a good time at the house. Pretty quiet around here actually, nothing too wild and crazy going on. Still enjoying wandering around town, still enjoying everyones company at the house. Things are a little hectic, there's another person in the house right now. Jaakko was on an exchange to the states and came back while I was in the UK. Jesse and him technically occupy the same room, just switch back and forth while the other is away. So Jesse's in his room still, Jaakko's in Joel's room where I was before, Joel's kipping with Alice and I'm on the big futon in the living room. It's no problem for ... read more

Hey all, Well I just added a blog that I wrote several days ago, and I debated sending it at all because it is somewhat obsolete, and my plans certainly did not work out the way I had imagined they would. The morning I was on my way to London, I went down to the train station in the morning before my train got there to get my ticket. In case i haven't mentioned you don't buy your ticket on the train, you have to get it from a teller or one of the many ticket machines. I thought I would pay with debit, because Joel's north american debit card works on the machines so I thought mine would too. I put the card in, select my train, and... it doesn't accept my card. Ooookay, try ... read more

*Written January 16th, I had trouble getting on to the site to finish and publish the blog, so here it is, better late than never* Hey all, I can't say I'm having a peachy-keen time here... I'm still sick, getting a bit of a cough and it's hard to muster up the energy to galavant around town. So the last few days have been quiet. I've been spending time in the house, watching movies, chatting with people. There's always someone around at any given time, and theres always something to do. I went to town a couple times, took a lot of pictures, went for some walks with Joel and Alice and whoever is around. I bought some boots! They're green!! I'm pretty excited about them. Mostly I've been struggling to go to bed at a ... read more

Hey everyone, I haven't put a blog up since Saturday! I hope you're all doing well. Let's see, what have I been up to... Sunday I made pancakes for everyone, and we did stuff around the house. It was the last day of vacation before classes started again, so we cleaned and watched a couple movies. Monday I had a good wander around town; first I knew where I was going, then I was lost, then I thought I knew where I was going, ended up in in a different part of town than I was trying to get to, thought I knew where I was going again, but was lost again, and then I found my way back to the city centre, and I know how to get home from there. Basically I walked around ... read more

Well this may be silly but we went to an African Museum today. While in Europe, why not learn about another continent?? Another house member appeared last night, Chris from Germany, and while talking about what I wanted to do while in Maastricht and the museums I wanted to visit in other cities he mentioned how there was an African museum in town. There used to be a church in Maastricht that sent a lot of missionaries to Africa, and when they came home they'd bring an item or two. Over the years there became quite a collection of items, either as gifts or swiped we're not sure. It's quite a nice little exhibit, I enjoyed it although all the descriptions were in Dutch, but Chris and Marit helped translate for me. They also had ... read more
