Europe » Italy » Apulia » Martina Franca July 8th 2023

We rose early to walk around the top of Sassi and down to the bottom (plus up again). Only the collectors of rubbish were around and the odd person walking their dog. For us, it’s always rewarding to see a town/village with no one about. For nightlife, we prefer people. I began capturing (photographing) doors and steps. After making our way to the car it was onto Martina Franca through farmland and National Parks and our “Trulli” accommodation for 2 nights. Everything is so close in this small region so well within 2 hours we had arrived. I drive slowly … too slow for the Italians. Once again, our accommodation is immaculate. Being quite tired from the very late night and early rising this morning we decided to rest up to energise for our exploration this ... read more

Alberobello is trulli territory. Martina Franca area is trulli territory. There are hundreds. Most of the farms and very small villages are constructed in the trulli style. What is a trulli? From the outside you see a whitewashed stone hut with a conical roof. They are limestone dwellings of drywall (mortarless) construction made of roughly worked limestone boulders. The domed/conical roof is built up of corbelled limestone slabs (see instruction diagram). The walls are double skin with rubble core. Doorways and small windows pierce the thick walls. An internal fireplace and alcoves are recessed into the walls. The roof is also double skin with a watertight outer core. Water is collected via the projecting eaves at the base of the roof which divert water through channelled slabs into a cistern beneath the house. Ingenious. We left ... read more

After months and months of plotting, scheming and straight-out lying, we couldn’t believe the day had finally arrived! The tightly managed schedule was tracking well when we left but less well when we hit the freeway…headed in exactly the wrong direction. Adding half an hour to the journey when your nerves are already on a knife edge is even less good when you get the message from Heathrow that the intricately orchestrated plan looks to be falling at the final hurdle due to BA’s overbooking. Some tense minutes, some tears and an express trip to Pisa and we received the joyous news that the plan was back on track. Piazza dei miracoli it truly was!! So back on our way to collect our online order which required a significant amount of wondering and wandering but we ... read more

Europe » Italy » Apulia » Altamura July 7th 2023

We escaped the rush hour traffic of Bari by departing early and headed to the hills of Pulgia and the town of Altamura about 45kms away. The town is known for its quality of bread called Pane di Altamura and is sold in numerous other Italian cities. We found the number one baker of the bread, Vincenzo Diele, met and spent time with him in his, “Antico Forno Santa Caterina”, which was constructed and hasn’t changed since 1391. Amazing. It was our friend who we met yesterday, the emperor Frederick who ordered the construction of the large Altamura cathedral which we also visited. We walked and made our way along the many beautiful narrow lanes that make up the old town of Altamura and came across one of the lowest arches in Europe, Arco Basso, at ... read more

There’s been a lot in the media lately about how crowded and horrible Italy is at the moment with throngs of tourists etc etc. But we seemed to find ourselves far away from all of that in a beautiful little pocket of Tuscany just over the border from Liguria. We started our journey from Turin and ventured to Albenga to visit with Franca and Luciano. Irene was also there enjoying the seaside with her grandparents. It was lovely to see them and all the girls enjoyed a swim in the sea while I dusted off my Italian and chatted with Franca. We had a quick lunch at the beach and then dropped in on Luciano who was resting at home, not in the best health. We shared some funny memories of when I’d stayed with them ... read more

Upgraded the car to a bigger size and automatic too … naturally one had to pay for convenience. So, the challenge had arrived to mix it with the crazy drivers of Italy. It took a team effort to exit and enter Bari during peak hour and arrive at our various destinations throughout the day. Whenever we were in the car it was extreme concentration with eyes in the back and sides of our heads working overtime. Vehicles of all shapes and sizes overtaking on the inside, cars, scooters, bikes, pedestrians, darting out of side streets without a care, no signalling, stopping on main thoroughfares beside parked cars and leaving the vehicle to go to a shop or to speak to a friend they had just seen on the footpath, were just a FEW of the unorthodox ... read more

Being that we were in the birthplace of Ferdi, we thought it only right that we make a pilgrimage to visit his shrine - Mauto, the museum of automobiles. But first, we dropped in on Federica, who was convalescing at home. It was great to see her and catch up. Since we enjoyed the circumnavigation of Porto airport yesterday, we thought we’d try a repeat around the museum. It was particularly enhanced by my desperation for the bathroom so by the time we actually arrived at the museum, I didn’t really care what it housed. But it was a pleasant surprise to wander through the old cars and appreciate what a formative influence car manufacture had on Turin’s history. But there’s only so much ugh history one teenager can endure so we headed to the osteria ... read more

Caught the 6.56am train to Naples. A little concerned when it had taken an hour to cover 10 stops as it would mean that by the time we arrived in Naples we would have missed our connecting train to Caserta plus the train to Bari. However, after the 10thstop, the train sped through the remaining 20 stations without a stop, and with smiles on our faces, instead of lines of concern, arrived in plenty of time to find our platform. In no time at all we were in Caserta, with time to grab a coffee (and a roll for me), before our beautiful business class ride through farmland countryside of vineyards, wheatfields, olive groves, vegetable crops and hay fields to Bari and the Pulgia region. The train journey took us from the Gulf of Naples across ... read more

Considering we were in these parts, we thought we’d make the effort to see what all the fuss about Porto was for. So, amidst howls of protest, we packed up early and headed to the airport to leave the car, in a tactic designed to minimise stress and parking angst. Unfortunately the architects of the Porto Airport parking areas had different ideas and we enjoyed several scenic excursions around the airport. Finally having managed to leave the car, we grabbed a taxi into the city. The next 20 minutes were a blur for me as I frantically tried to contain the mad canine escapee from the other side of the world. When I emerged from that stress, I miraculously found I’d been steered towards a tart shop. What a great way to see out our time ... read more

Apologies to Naples … you are not chaotic … ferry embarking and disembarking along the Amalfi Coast is chaotic … definitely would not pass the slimmest of safety regulations. Witnessed a young lady being grabbed as she was about to topple into the sea at Positano … a crew member came within centimetres of losing both lower legs … the crush of people in the ‘every man for himself’ boarding procedure … enough with the negativity … From Sorrento, along the coast to Positano to Amalfi, up the mountain side into Ravello the vistas were magnificent… the vistas from Ravello, truly awesome. Ravello, a resort town set 365 meters above the Tyrrhenian Sea by Italy’s Amalfi Coast, is home to iconic cliffside gardens. Overlooking the Amalfi Coast, Ravello is the city of music, a medieval village ... read more
