Europe » Italy » Liguria » Cinque Terre » Monterosso al Mare July 24th 2023

A day at the Cinque Terre started early with the 8am train from Montecatini Terme to Monterosso al Mare (the most northerly of the 5 towns) which is a 2 1/2 hour train ride. The Cinque Terre is a rugged coastline on the Italian Riviera composed of five beautiful hillside villages. We started looking around Monterosso al Mare, which is the largest of the five towns and has the only sandy beach in the area. Is a lovely town made up of a newer area and the old town and is relative flat. After a short explore of this village we then hoping a regional train to Vernazza. Vernazza is a tradition fishing village with colourful houses surrounding the small harbour where small fishing boats are anchored. This is a very picturesque village but loads of ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Radda in Chianti July 22nd 2023

Todays plan with Alan was to have us do 3 wine tastings, and after a nice 1 hour trip we arrived at the first winey. Albola Winery and Castle seemed like a nice place to start, we parked and went in, they were lovely and friendly sat us down in their sheltered courtyard and gave us an explanation of the operation and wines. We tried one white, 3 reds and a surprise dessert wine. The dessert wine was a unexpected treat and a long with a couple of bottles of Chianti Riserva we left with a dessert wine. We found a great little off the beaten path lunch spot before continuing our tour. Off to our second winery Cantina Castelvecchi . How ever when we arrived there was no one to be seen, we poked around ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Montecatini Alto July 21st 2023

For Al's first day we kept it quiet and decided to go to a hill top town near by. The town called Montecatini Alto could be accessed by Car or a Funicular Train. As the train is closed from 12:30 to 2:30 for lunch and we needed to be back at the accommodation by 3pm we decided to split with Rose and Al taking the Funicular Train and I drove up. Montecatini Alto is a lovely hill top town with all the usual tourist shops and BNB's. We selected Ristorante 'Caffè Giusti' dal 1898 for lunch and I know I keep saying it, but wow, another great meal. After we got back to our Accommodation and met with the cleaning lady we went down to the local community pool for an afternoon swim. Another great day ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Viareggio July 20th 2023

Today we are going to spend the day at a Beach Club in Viareggio, then we are picking up Rose's Cousin, who last featured in London family dinner, from Pisa Airport. We had decided to spend the day at Bagno Andrea Doria beach club. We chose this as we could book and pay for the tent, chairs and parking which meant we would be able to have a soother entry. We had a great day in the heat and the Mediterranean which was probably 30C but with a great sea breeze. They had a great restaurant and shop with ice pops and drinks. We did not take the camera, so no photos other than the one Rose added to our Facebook. Late in the afternoon we packed up and drove to Pisa Airport and picked up ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Lucca July 19th 2023

As we arrived in Tuscany the cold Rose had developed from Scotland transferred to me somewhere in France, and we decided to focus on getting well. So we had a couple of days in the villa and focus on getting well. As you can imagine this became boring quickly and by the third day we decided we needed to venture further than the supermarkets and went out for dinner to a local restaurant. Ristorante Pizzeria Da Caino La Cantina will focus in future blogs as we intend to have this as outrTuesday dinner venue. The next day we went to Lucca for the day, about a 20 minute drive. Once we arrived and parked, we aimlessly walked the streets absorbing the atmosphere while Rose found a little bag shop and purchased a replacement bag for the ... read more

Europe » Italy » Lazio » Fiumicino July 15th 2023

And so it is that all roads eventually lead us back here and we must start listing off our ‘lasts’ as we head home. Last morning at the villa, last rally drive down the hill and last visit to a hilltop town…until next time! An early start to pack and get everything sorted, especially the mountain of garbage and empty bottles!! Goodbyes to all our flat mates of the last week and we were off down the freeway to Orvieto, via our last coffee at the autogrill. Another parking arrangement with the marriage in tact and we were off up the hill to Orvieto. Another beautiful town with photo opportunities at every turn. However the highlight was undoubtedly the cathedral - absolutely stunning! I’m not normally a huge fan of religious buildings, but the pope who ... read more

Europe » Italy » Tuscany » Monsummano Terme July 15th 2023

Today we leave Piedmont, but know that we will be back again to explore more of this lovely region. Our trip today is about 4 hours of driving with a stop mid way. So we set off early to ensure we can minimise time in the hottest part of the day. On our first Italian trip we spent 1/2 day in Parma and did a tour of a Parmesan Cheese factory, we had decided we needed to return to the factory and pick up some cheese for Tuscany. As with all the world, Latteria Sociale San Pier Damiami has new products, but the factory has not changed. They have doubled their production by now producing Parmesan cheeses from Brown cows as well as the traditional Black and White cows. We decided to get 1kg of each ... read more

Europe » Italy » Umbria » Gubbio July 14th 2023

After yesterday’s unsuccessful venture into nature, we thought we’d stick with man made beauty for the next few days. Another lazy start before we were on our way to Gubbio. Miraculously didn’t need a divorce to find the parking area and we were on our way up into town in minutes. The town is spectacularly set on a hillside, dominated by the Palazzo dei Consoli. We made our way up up up but thankfully, it was cooler today with a bit of cloud cover, so whinging was minimised. We enjoyed a wander through the medieval street before reaching the top point of our climb at the cathedral. Meandered back down and pottered around in some shops before the requests for lunch became overwhelming and we stopped on a small square. We all enjoyed some pasta, with ... read more

Europe » Italy » Piedmont » Acqui Terme July 14th 2023

We had chosen Agnes and Albin by Johanna's lovely property in Incisa Scapaccino for the lovely pool and the lovely cottage. We really enjoyed our stay and made the most of the pool dedicating two days as Pool days. During the middle day of our stay we explored the region attending a wonderful market at Aqua Terme and explored this wonderful town. In the centre of the town is an open hot water spring with water at 74 degree. After the explore of the town we enjoyed a relaxing afternoon lunch at Osteria 46 on the outside terrace, can you believe they have renovated a disused crematorium into a restaurant, the building structure was wonderful. Still, another great Italian meal at a reasonable price in and interest property. Due to the heat it was h... read more
