Now for the very serious business of the cars. There are 2 Ferrari museums; one in Modena and one in Maranello. I’d gotten tickets to the Maranello museum so that we could try to get into the factory as we can get in free as Ferrari owners. We hopped in a cab and got to Maranello; we had the driver leave us off at the factory. Dale was so impressed as there is a driveway that is in many photos and there he was, walking on the driveway. We asked about going into the factory and were told we had to ask at the museum so we walked there. As it turns out, we could not take the boys into the factory as there is an age limit of 16. We were disappointed but at least ... read more

Wet, windy and gloomy weather returned to Sorrento throughout this past weekend, leaving us confined indoors much of the time. We finally got a break yesterday (Sunday) afternoon, when the rain stayed away for awhile. So we decided to have lunch at La Maison Douce. We had not dined here since we departed Sorrento for our interlude on the French Riviera two weeks ago, so we wanted to pay our respects to Nello, our favorite head waiter and consummate schmoozer. As we've mentioned in previous blog posts, Nello is quite adept at schmoozing his guests. In fact, he's refined his technique to such a degree that he full well deserves the sobriquet of ‘Romancer of the Stone’! He now greets Dee with kisses on her cheek, and me with hugs, while cheerfully catering to our every ... read more

Since I was unable to meet my sister in Stockholm in April due to work, we decided a long school weekend in May would make up for it. So, we decided to meet in Rome, which my sister and the kids had not been to before. My BIL had and I had been 10 years ago, and I thought it would be interesting to see how it stacked up now that I was a more experienced traveler. I love the history of Rome and how they basically just built within and around the ruins in place for thousands of years. However, I did not enjoy the scams, pickpockets, dirtiness and general chaos; I absolutely love the smaller areas of Italy - friendly people, delicious food, interesting villages.... but Rome was not high on my list. I ... read more

Today was the warmest day in Sorrento since our arrival on April 1st, as the temperature soared to 72° Fahrenheit by the time we went out for lunch, and to do some shopping in the early afternoon. This veritable heat wave, under mostly sunny skies, was a novel experience for us as we strolled along the Corso Italia with the other tourists, who were obviously enjoying the balmy weather after suffering days of torrential rain. According to several locals with whom we've spoken since our return from the French Riviera, while we were away Sorrento and the rest of the peninsula were inundated with rainfall, so much so that one day earlier this week local schools were forced to close. We had seen wet weather forecasts for southern Italy on BBC television during our stay in ... read more

Yesterday afternoon we returned to Sorrento after our 10-day sojourn in Saint-Jean-Cap-Ferrat, the charming little piece of paradise we discovered on the Côte d'Azur in the south of France. To tell you the truth, we had become so enchanted with Saint-Jean during our stay that neither of us were particularly excited about returning to Sorrento. But when we opened the door to our apartment on Via degli Aranci, which had been vacant and shuttered during our absence, it did feel a lot like a homecoming! After all, we've spent more than five weeks here, so it really has started to feel like home. Our concierge in Saint-Jean, Jean-Pierre, had arranged for a taxi to the airport yesterday at 8:00 AM for our 10:45 AM flight from Nice to Napoli. Just before the taxi arrived, he came ... read more

Lake Como is about as famous as the celebrities who have frequented it over the years; Madonna, Alfred Hitchcock, Richard Branson, Gianni Versace and even Leonardo da Vinci are among the illustrious names to have holidayed in this idyllic neck of the woods. Perhaps most er, famously, George Clooney - amongst many other luminaries - has a lakeside property here. Littered with lavish and opulent villas built by aristocrats and wealthy Milanese merchants over the years, Lake Como has been known as a glamorous getaway destination for the well-heeled and privileged since the times of Ancient Rome. A place that has been attracting big names for this long must have something about it and it's this mythical air of the debonair, that has always intrigued me about visiting the place one day. Well, that day has ... read more

I decided to get up extra early to walk down to the harbour for some early morning sunrise photographs. I was a little indecisive as to whether to take pictures looking down on the harbour from a viewpoint above or down on the harbour itself. In the end, I did both, but as a consequence of my indecisiveness, I ended-up going up and down all those steps twice. I walked past Franco's pizza restaurant at 5.30am and it was still open and full of people, who were obviously finishing their night out with a pizza. Clearly, that's the Italian equivalent of the British all-night kabab shop. Despite the fact that it was ok for the four of us to get in a taxi from the airport, when we tried to book the taxi to take us ... read more

Needless to say, it was cakes and homemade marmalade on toast for breakfast. There was a bottle of Prosecco, which I thought it would be rude not to try, albeit mixed with orange juice as I'm not a complete alcoholic. The plan for today was to go to the island of Capri, so we headed off for the harbour. It was a surprisingly long way down, so it involved a long set of steps. Down was easy, although we're not looking forward to the climb back up later. Of course, we bypassed all the touts selling boat tickets and tours, and found what looked like the official ticket office. All the windows were closed, which was worrying as it looked like we were going to have to go back, with our tails between our legs and ... read more

There was no lemon juice for breakfast, freshly squeezed or otherwise. There were a lot of cakes though, so I was very happy, despite it not being in the league of the hotel in Gibraltar (see ). I did particularly love the homemade marmalade, although it was made from the usual oranges rather than lemons. We were woken up art 7.00am by someone tidying the gardens with the world's loudest leaf blower, but it wasn't then long before we were planning to get up anyway, as the plan for today was to go to Pompeii. This, to be honest, was the main reason for coming here. We had been reliably advised that the best way to get from Sorrento to Pompeii is by train so we headed to the train station, which was only about a ... read more

Oh how different it was today to our last international flights (see )! "Excuse me, but where is the Business Class Lounge? Why are you laughing?" "You do realise that this is Luton Airport don't you? You can get a pastry from Pret if you like." "Where's my complementary whisky cocktail as I'm getting comfortable in my seat? And why are you laughing?" "You do realise that this is EasyJet don't you? You can have small tin of Diet Coke for £20 if you like." The bag-drop at Luton and at Heathrow are the same though, with that annoying self-service machine and the worry as to whether I had done it right and whether we would ever see the bag again. There was then the absolutely humongous queue to get through security. To be fair, though, ... read more
