Dee and Richard TaylorI have to say, we were a little disappointed with Venice. It is pretty (in a kind of dilapidated shabby chic sort of way) but we couldn't help feeling that this town gets a little more hype than it deserves. We got in tired after two full days (bone achingly full) in Interlaken. Maybe that's why we couldn't help but notice that there are a few things the Italians could do to help bring this old girl up to date. I think a few pictures might help illustrate what we mean. ... read more

Day 30 Wednesday July 30th, 1997 I have a new pen. All praise God or Allah or whatever invisible man/cow/elephant with medusa snake ears you worship! What a miracle! Look, every time I press ink to paper little symbols stream out. Who would have thunk it?? My other two former pens have met their maker. Prior to disembarking on my monumental journey of global proportions I decided to buy the most inspirational stylo available. I bought one of those fancy calligraphy pens. There was method to my madness. You see…in the event that I actually started to write and it was later determined that my scribblings were all crap at least I would have a cool looking pen in my hand while I ravaged the paper. Instead of people asking what I was writing about, they ... read more

Day 29 Tuesday July 30, 1997 Right now I am sitting in Venetian Trattoria Restaurante. Somewhere in Venice. The place is packed. I am putting the pen to paper and looking for an escape. I must escape from this dastardly place. To be clear, I don’t really want to escape from Venice because I dislike it. Venice is not a hole. Rather, the city is wonderful, quite scenic. No, I just hate the fact that it is reaming with billions of bloody tourists. I hate tourists. All of them? Yes, and especially those swarms of vermin tourists that clog up the comparatively cramped city of Venice. They ignite this bitter hated that hibernates deep inside me. Irritating. Aggravating….utterly maddening. And the pests are everywhere. Everywhere. It is like I am caught in a plague. Some may ... read more

Summertime is the time when Europe is invaded by tourists. Tourists from all over the world. A large share of these tourists and a very noticeable category consists of American backpackers. On a pilgrimage they distribute themselves across the continent. They all travel with different motives, in different constellations, and with different itineraries. But they have certain things in common. Americans appear to have a born connection with country fellows. They all communicate with the next American like they’re family, although they may have met only a few minutes ago. This is what strikes me this wonderful summer day in beautiful Venice. I’m resting my tired feet and am trying to orient myself on the map, sitting on the stairs to a large building. A few meters away sits a young and very cute girl by ... read more

UK & Europe, May 1993 Left Florence and headed for Venice. Venice gives off an air of elegance, yet there is much ruin and decay when you look closely. We went to a glass blowing factory and saw the most amazing creations of glass ware. True craftsmanship. I have always had a romantic notion of Venice in my mind. A romantic gondola trip through the canals with my husband by my side, whispering endearing words of love in my ear.......That notion was quickly squashed with no hope of romance from my better half! He was too busy looking through the lens of our video camera all the time. But we did get to glide through the canals on a gondola and I enjoyed every minute of it. I could get used to this mode of transport! ... read more
