My trip to Venice was short, but wonderful! I was working in Oberaudorf, Germany and we had a few days off, so we travelled to Italy. Our first stop was Verona to see an opera and then off to Venice. We only had one day to experience Venice, but what a day this was! I was with my dear friend Daniel and we spent the day walking around Venice. We saw the sights and enjoyed some beautiful weather. Not much money to do anything, I did splurge on a Gondola ride. It was worth every penney! In the evening, we had to get back to our transportation, and got caught in a massive rain storm, it was so big! We got wet, but had a wonderful time running through the Piazza in the rain. I hope ... read more

We arrive in Venice and it was gorgeous! The canals, the slightly crooked buildings - all of it wonderful! We took a vaparetto from the airport to Palazzo Bembo where we had to hunt to find out room. It was a darling place. We walked up the crooked stairs in the dark and felt our way around until we got our key (which had a large beautiful silk tassle attached to it) and found our room. We arrived to our room and opened up the charming shutter windows and heard romantic music below from an accordian player in the courtyard. It was so wonderful I thought I was in a movie!... read more

Geo: 45.4343, 12.3388Bells of San Marco awoke us at 07.00h. A wonderful alarm. Laid awake for a few minutes, then up and shower. Good breakfast in nice salon. Out to the Doge's Palace for the extensive and very interesting tour. All furnishings have been removed ... they were regarded as private property of the Doge and so would be removed after his death. We toured the prisons as well. And, of course, walked the Bridge of Sighs. We returned to the room so Kyla could nap, then went to lunch at a restaurant below the Rialto. We walked back to see if the Basilica was less crowded, but there was still a long line. So we went shopping. Paul bought shoes; Kyla acquired a watch. Got another watch for her friend, who was watching our pets. Back ... read more

Geo: 45.4343, 12.3388Up and decent breakfast: eggs cooked to order! Day is cloudy but not rainy. We walked from the hotel to the center of old town. Climbed through the small castle - but the view from the top of the tower was fine. Walked out on promenade up to Villa Catullo. These are ruins of a villa from the 1st Century BCE which tradition assigns to Catalus. The ruins are very extensive and fun to explore. It started turning into a warm day, too. Then, to Venice. We had a long wait for the car park, but finally received the last (really!) space on the roof. Grabbed all of our luggage and searched for dock from which to take water bus. Finally found it and bought tickets. Long but interesting ride to Piazza San Marco. The Piazza ... read more

Dee and Richard TaylorI have to say, we were a little disappointed with Venice. It is pretty (in a kind of dilapidated shabby chic sort of way) but we couldn't help feeling that this town gets a little more hype than it deserves. We got in tired after two full days (bone achingly full) in Interlaken. Maybe that's why we couldn't help but notice that there are a few things the Italians could do to help bring this old girl up to date. I think a few pictures might help illustrate what we mean. ... read more

Day 30 Wednesday July 30th, 1997 I have a new pen. All praise God or Allah or whatever invisible man/cow/elephant with medusa snake ears you worship! What a miracle! Look, every time I press ink to paper little symbols stream out. Who would have thunk it?? My other two former pens have met their maker. Prior to disembarking on my monumental journey of global proportions I decided to buy the most inspirational stylo available. I bought one of those fancy calligraphy pens. There was method to my madness. You seeā€¦in the event that I actually started to write and it was later determined that my scribblings were all crap at least I would have a cool looking pen in my hand while I ravaged the paper. Instead of people asking what I was writing about, they ... read more
