Since neither Lindsey nor Dana had ever been to Italy and we wanted a road trip, we decided to drive the 3+ hours to the Italian border, near Lake Como. Road trip We did not start too early, took the gondola to our car and took off. Dana drove on the way there and we took a road through the mountains. And holy crap were there mountains, long windy roads up through the hills, lots of switchbacks, curves, narrow two lanes... It was beautiful though! And not very busy of course. At one point at the top of the pass, we went through a tunnel where we had to wait while workers seemed to be barricading the top. In preparation for winter perhaps? Most likely since we looked when we got home and as of last ... read more

This morning, I am thinking about toilets…in Europe. They are all different, and more or less effective. Some years ago, when I was writing a book about designs for sustainability, I did some research on how toilet design was changing…and found a hilarious article about the necessity for a reliable product to use when testing flushing effectiveness, that is, without having to depend on volunteers off and on during the day. I think that the final product consisted of peanut butter, and other organic ingredients. At the time, manufacturers tested for volume as well as different consistencies…at some point, they even had a chart that I saw in one of the big box stores (some toilets were better than others re: volume or amount)…. I don’t believe this research has reached least not the countries ... read more

Where in the world is Gabby the motorhome? She is set up in a caravan site on the edge of a lake near to the town of Lecco. The sun is out . It is raining back home and it is unbearably hot here. It should have been an easy drive down here but Gabby despite being quite slim still weighs in at around 3 tonnes and her weight plays havoc with Glenns shoulders as he wrestles with her bulk on the Italian roads. It was a day of driving through a few countries today . First of all Stowitzerland still with snow on the peaks. Still with the greenest of green fields. Tunnels after tunnels until eventually we came out in Italy and reached our destination of Lecco. The plan was to use this campsite ... read more

It’s Saturday – parkrun day. Today we’re going to Milano Nord parkrun in Milano Nord Park. This morning’s run has pros and cons. Pros: (1) it’s a scenic route (2) it’s flat (3) the participants are of diverse ability, so I’m not on my own at the back and have someone to follow. Cons: (1) there are a lot of other park users to avoid (2) my knee hurts (3) my lack of fitness due to injury (4) it’s bloody hot. But I persevere and make it to the finish line. There was supposed to be water but the fast runners have drunk it all. I hobble off to the supermarket dehydrated and grumpy. For breakfast I buy spoonable Gorgonzola. Cheese you can eat with a spoon! I love Italy. We return to the hotel and ... read more

This morning we are up early. Breakfast is served from 8-10, so the old man is on his starting blocks well before 8. We paid £108 for our little motel room, so I’m expecting great things from breakfast. We get a bread basket, some cold cuts and 3 sachets of jam. After breakfast we set off for Milan. At the world’s most complicated junction, we take a wrong turn and end up on the right road in the wrong direction. To rectify the situation, we must pass through the 10 km tunnel again (twice). The issue arose at a fork. I said ‘don’t go right’ and we went right. Apparently, it’s my fault: I should have said ‘keep left’. Finally, we are heading south, or not north, depending on your point of view. Today’s drive is ... read more

De electriciteitsaa ... read more

Late breakfast today then go out for souvenirs.Rang and changed pickup time tomorrow. Lunch bite at McDonalds then coffee at Panarini's cafe. Back to hotel for rest. On my own walked to San Ambrogio basilica. Rebuilt in Romanesque style using artefacts from 300's. Plain inside except for beautiful gold mosaic tiled dome and several special original pieces. Also original chapel again with gold mosaic dome. On way back came across San Giorgio church with wonderful painting of Passion of Christ. Called into San Sepolcro church again, truly taken by it's simplicity and beautiful sculptured scenes. Lit some candles for our family then walked back to hotel. Straight to dinner.... read more
