Today we had a full day to explore the little city of Milano all by ourselves (although i did spend the 1st half working - sorry Leonie) Inline with our normal modus operandi we headed to the tallest tower - this time is was by climbing up the Basilica of the Nativity of Saint Mary. We thought we would only get as fr as the terraces, but they actually let you climb to the roof top. We were rewarded with amazing views over the city. We did a lot of window shopping in all the high end brands but managed to stay strong, will almost, you cant go to Milan and not come back with a strong paper bag!!! The Crazy Rich Asians (they own reference to themselves) on our tour didn't disappoint and left Milan ... read more

We flew into Milan from Cyprus, having spent a week in Paphos (click here for updated blog) and made our journey to Lake Como via bus, train and ferry. You know you’re in Italy when there’s a guy on a monocycle in the middle of the road, juggling some clubs to earn a few euros, while the traffic lights are on red. As a picture, it’s ‘the one that got away’, sadly. I love Italy. Lake Como has been on our to-do list for many years. This part of the Italian Lakes conjures up glamorous images. It was a location for some of the early James Bond films, Padmé Amidala and Anakin Skywalker's got married there in ‘Star Wars: Attack of the Clones’. There are opulent villas (George Clooney is a resident these days) beside the ... read more

Today we woke up to overcast skies, but still a beautiful view of the lake. I started my morning off with a bit of a glitch. our hair dryer decided to die about a quarter of the way in, so I ended up going down for breakfast with wet hair…attractive. The breakfast here unbelievably was even better than it was in France. There were assorted pastries , eggs, yogurt , fruit, you name it. The coffee was also delicious. After stuffing ourselves, (going to need to diet when we get back), we headed out to our next destination, Bormio, Italy. Once again we encountered tunnel after tunnel. Our views on this leg was mostly concrete. We ventured off the highway for a stop in Como in hopes of spending time viewing the lake. Once again there ... read more

Our 3 week Italy trip actually started with a Toronto-Zurich overnight AC flight. From the airport we took the train to Chur, a small town about 1 1/2 outside of Zurich, for an over night stay and to catch the Bernina Express the next day. This 4 hour rail passage through the Swiss Alps was an excellent way to shake off the jet lag and enjoy some striking scenery on the way to northern Italy. We rented an apartment in the small town of Varenna for the 3 days we were in Lake Como area. Varenna is one several small cobblestoned towns along the shores of the lake that are connected with frequent ferry service. Lake Como is one of Italy’s largest fresh water lake (Lake Garda is the largest). It sits at the base of ... read more

Big bustling London. There’s always something to do in this metropolis. To say that it doesn’t sleep is not entirely correct. London takes a while to wake up in the mornings. Even on workdays it seems that the inhabitants are tucked away in their pokey little apartments until well after sunrise. At this time of year, the sun gets up pretty early too. To me that seems like a waste of daylight! When London finally springs to life there is always something for the traveller to enjoy. Mum and I have both been to London a few times and seen most of the big attractions. This time around we took in a stage show. If you are easily offended, I recommend that you stay well away from ‘The Book of Mormon’. Mum went a second time ... read more

Lake Como is about as famous as the celebrities who have frequented it over the years; Madonna, Alfred Hitchcock, Richard Branson, Gianni Versace and even Leonardo da Vinci are among the illustrious names to have holidayed in this idyllic neck of the woods. Perhaps most er, famously, George Clooney - amongst many other luminaries - has a lakeside property here. Littered with lavish and opulent villas built by aristocrats and wealthy Milanese merchants over the years, Lake Como has been known as a glamorous getaway destination for the well-heeled and privileged since the times of Ancient Rome. A place that has been attracting big names for this long must have something about it and it's this mythical air of the debonair, that has always intrigued me about visiting the place one day. Well, that day has ... read more

Ciel bleu, temps parfait!

Today was a perfect morning in an Italian town. I came to Pavia around eight in the morning when things were still closed and only the occasional dog walker was on the street. I had a clear view of the river, buildings and alleys. I settled into a vibrant cafe behind the church and sat with locals, enjoying breakfast and watching the town wake up. All the cliches were around me, only they were not cliches, they were normal day routines. And I am sitting in the middle..maybe a touristy kind of cliché? Mothers on bikes with young child on back cutting through the courtyard, fathers on bikes laughing as they chatted to their child on back of bicycle, old men in nice shirts sipping espressos, young men with that dark curly hair ordering cappuccinos before ... read more

Well, hello, dear readers, long time no see! I have been busy with my new life in London- work is going well and we are all settled into to our flat. One major thing I have noticed is how cheap flights are from London to the rest of Europe. You can go to skyscanner.com, type in your departure city, select "take me anywhere", and up will pop the cheapest flights for the dates you have selected. One night I was exploring the website, dreaming about a weekend trip somewhere, when I saw that in a few weeks from then there were 9 pound flights to Milan, Italy. These flights would get me there on Saturday afternoon and would then leave early Sunday morning, so I changed around some times and managed to find early morning Saturday, ... read more
