I had told daddy after our trip to South Africa/Egypt/Greece this summer that my next trip I wanted to go back to Italy to see the place I was born. So this was the time. A 2 hour drive from Valpolicella and we arrived in Sacile. It is a beautiful little town. While we did not go into the hospital, he showed me what room I stayed in after I was born for 2 nights. We then passed by the town of Aviano. This is the where the Air Force Base was that daddy worked at for 3 years. We were not allowed on it anymore, since daddy is no longer in the military. He showed me the clinic he worked at, which was now a big hospital, and the school my brother went to. We ... read more

I was recently lucky enough to win a flying two-day trip to the Bepi Tossolini Distillery in Friuli in the extreme North-East of Italy, off the back of a work competition to see who could sell the most limoncello. The distillery itself sits on the Eastern corner of the Po Valley with a vast shelf of mountains in the near distance. We were 50 km from Austria in the north and far closer to Slovenia to the east. The houses had a slightly Germanic look to them - and I think even the locals themselves would admit to having weird accents. Bepi Tossolini's central significance in the pantheon of fine tipples is the distillation and production of Grappa. The Ancient Greeks called Italy "Vinotria" (meaning "land of wine") so it is appropriate that even the country’s ... read more

On my way to Trieste I had to change train at Bologna. In the waiting room I saw a big memorystone with a list of 85 names and ages 3 years old up til 81, victims of an act of terror at Bologna station on August 2nd in 1980. Terror is of all times but as long as we dont ask from our governments 100% security we will always be able to survive. They were busy in the waitingroom preparing probably a tv programm by interviewing people and filming the memorystone. The makers of the programm were all younger than born in 1980. On the stations in Italy you see a lot of police and every now and than soldiers on patrol. Even inside the trains on the mainlines you see every now and than police walking ... read more

Woke up this morning to rain! This is a big deal, as the temperature dropped about 20 degrees down to... well... roughly 20 degrees. While the consistentlz hot and sunny weather has been lovely, to my mind, 42 degrees was a little much and it was certainly time for a change. We rehearsed this morning for our Romantic class, and rehearsal went really well. We were the last ones to compete in the class, and so performed about noon. We had been told that if we were going to be invited to the Grand Prix, we would hear by 1 p.m. and so after congratulating ourselves on a job well done (it truly seemed to go quite well), we wandered back to the hotel to wait. Shortly after 1 p.m., I messaged one of the other ... read more

Up bright and early this morning, although not as early as the small group performing in the Renaissance Class. They were first on the agenda for the entire day. We wandered over to the auditorium to see them perform at 9:00, and it was an absolute pleasure! They looked like they were having so much fun, and were sounding just about perfect! Stayed to listen to a few of the other competitors afterwards, and got to hear groups from Poland, Russia, Latvia, Italy, South Korea, amongst other countries. It was interesting to hear them all, but competitions like this can be pretty subjective, and we're not at all sure what the judges are looking for. Fingers crossed and hoping for the best. The best part of the a.m. was watching Heather stalk the pianist from a ... read more

First day of competition. Rehearsed at the hotel, then wandered to a park where we spent part of the morning first at a welcome ceremony (most notable because we got to meet someone who actually follows the blog of one of our choir members - but sadly the said choir member is not on tour with us due to academic commitments). We got to check out some of the other choirs, and also filmed a sort of promo video, I guess. We then were ushered to a school to rehearse some more, and sweltered our way through a rehearsal of the folk song set, which we performed tonight. I honestly don't think we've had a day of less than 35 degrees yet, and yesterday was a record breaker, apparently (there are pictures of pharmacies with the ... read more

This morning it was back on the bus to Verona. Verona is another smaller city that I think would be neat to revisit someday. In spite of the cheese-tastic-ness of the whole 'Juliet' tourism industry, it's a very historic city, not to mention that hey have the opera festival during the summer in the arena, lots of parks an interesting public places... One hour there really wasn't quite enough. We continued the day of bus-filled awesomeness after Verona, arriving in Gorizia in the evening with enough time to settle into rooms and get changed for our evening concert in Fiumicello, which was part of the festival in which we're competing. We sang in another church of unknown vintage, which was fairly full of audience members, including our bus driver, Gianfranco (who has been at _every_ one ... read more

In 1956, National Geographic published an article on Trieste, depicting it as a cultural melting pot of the surrounding influences - Slovenian, Croatian, and Italian. Somehow that article caught my attention, and I have always wanted to go to Trieste. I finally got my chance on this trip. Jan, Jennie, and I flew into Venice and took a water taxi to the train station. Checking on our train departure, we discovered that a train was leaving in a few minutes, about 2-1/2 hours ahead of our scheduled departure, so we hopped on board. Actually, given the amount of luggage, the term “hopped” sounds much more sprightly than the situation warrants. The train journey took us along the coast, past marble quarries and Prosecco of the fruity sparkling wines, into Trieste. We met up with Alan and ... read more

Day 8 Contiki Sooooo, having trouble remembering details, it w3ould apart I do have the brain of an 98 year old women (thanks Tez-dag-millionaire). We got into Florence around midday and headed to see the "outside" version of David, whilst we waited for our photographer to show up so we could get our group photo. Clearly, the photographer was in no rush and took her sweet time. During this time, I took some photos of these mime guys. Then they got the wrong idea and gestured for me to approach them. I turned around and was rude and quickly moved away. Creepy bastards. Then the photographer finally shows up and and takes 2 photos that take up about 5 minutes of our time - wow....glad we hung around for that one! Following this we decided that ... read more
