Today was Trieste day. We woke up early having had a bad night. The sounds of the local disco in Sistiana had wafted up from the harbour and disturbed us giving us a fitful night of sleep. Have come to the conclusion with campsites that some you win and some you lose. This one has everything but the boom boom reverberating from the harbour really took the shine off it. Our next door neighbours with child left having got fed up of the music and we moved to another plot further away in the hope of losing the noise. We had to sacrifice our sea view which was painful but we really did not feel inclined to listen to another night of disco music. We chose not to try the internet today as the cost of ... read more

Feel that I did an injustice in my last blog on Ferrara. The city was as nice as many Italian cities we had seen. A pretty cathedral sits in the city square which as usual is full of street cafes. The cathedral seemed a mix of the style of cathedrals Pisan with a touch of Tuscan architecture thrown into the mix. We didn’t go inside the church – sometimes you can be all churched out. They begin to blend one into the other. The city was bustling but then perhaps this was because it was a Saturday morning. We enjoyed it very much and perhaps would return again. From Ferrara we drove to the small and little known town of Aquilea. Very few people know of this large outpost of the Roman world. With a population ... read more

Before we set off for the start of week 2 we wrote down our thoughts on the week = we seem to be trying to mark campsites and work out which we prefer. At the moment would say that it is the quieter sites with perhaps less facilities like bars and swimming pools. More facilities tend to mean more people and that brings with it extra noise. We get a better nights sleep without the families who need all the facilities. Toilets and shower blocks range from excellent to downright basic. Some cleaner than others. I suppose you take your chance with each one. Washing clothes seems difficult at times. I can get them washed but moving on each day means little time to get them dried. I concentrate on smalls as these do dry easier. ... read more

It’s that damn alarm again. Tinking away for all it’s worth. Which isn’t much sad to say. It’s a runt in the world of alarm clocks. The other alarms probably picked on it in alarm school. Especially those obnoxious ones you hear in the movies or popular TV shows that are immediately followed by an excessively irate hand slamming down on top of. I hate those alarms. Anyway. I seek out the little button that turns it off. At 7:30 and 10 seconds a.m., sweet silence takes over again. Eyes slink closed. Wait! I can’t do that. I’m going hiking today. I slide out from under the sheet. Yes, that’s right. Sheet. I don’t have blankets. Fortunately, Austria’s ... read more

Ten days in September in Italy visiting cities mostly: Bergamo, Florence, Lucca, Rimini, Venice, Trieste, Milan.. Its my first visit, and being nature person I still really appreciated art and civilization i found in that country. Every city has its own spirit, but Florence and Venice especially. Milan was not impressive, except Duomo worth visiting as rest cities had heavy Romanesque buildings and Milano Duomo is magnificent piece of Gothic. Letting pictures speak for it. Enjoyed traveling by trains. ... read more

BON JOVI We went we saw and I'm still in love. We drove the 4 and half hours but for those who know me I would of walked 4 and half days to see him. David and I decided to drive to the stadium and park we went at 5 because gates opened at 5 and we would get a good park and get tea and everything would be great. We got off the autostrada and there were cars parking on the grass everyone was there. There were camper Vans and people were having BBQ's it looked like they had been there all day. David got a park down a back alley only 100mt from the Stadium when we were leaving a big storm came in and as we were driving people were parked up to ... read more

At the foot of the Juliaen Prealps, on Via Augustus that connected Aquileia with Norienna (Austria), Fruili is a series of fortified towns dating from Roman times. Lombards came from Norway through the central plains of Europe in the 5th century, settled and controlled the area until its was annexed to the Republic of Venica in 1420, fell under Austrian rule in 1798, belonged to France for a short time and oscillated between Austria & Italy until annexed by Italy in 1866. What about Yugoslavia, just over the lesser hills? The people mostly speak their own language, Fruileano, rather than Italian and many don't move far from the village in which they were born. That is, apart from all those Fruili folks who emigrated to Australia in the 60's. Our friends live in Gemona del Fruili ... read more

Venice Ministry of Misinformation The journey from Ljubljana to Venice ought to be an easy one; it’s a relatively short distance and I expect there to be a number of train and bus connections. However the information desks at the bus station and the train station do their best to make it difficult. On my first trip to the bus and train stations I am told that the only train is at 2a.m. and that the only bus is at 5a.m. Just as I’d resigned myself to an evening on the station platform I learn from a chance conversation with a couple of people staying at the hostel that they are taking a bus to Venice at about 8a.m. I return to the bus station and am told that there is indeed a bus at 8:15! ... read more

Triesting Times Three Countries In One Day The amazing hospitality being shown us in Croatia continues. Sanja’s brother, Miki, and his girlfriend, Doris take a day off to take us to Trieste in Italy. This involves travelling from Croatia, through a corner of Slovenia, and into Italy. There are good quality roads all the way. There has been a lot of road building in recent years but there’s also a lot of toll stations to pass through to help pay for it. Miki is also very careful to keep to the speed limits in Slovenia – both him and Sanja have told us that the Slovenian police hand out large instant fines for anyone caught speeding. Miki is clearly on a different career path to Sanja. He is an expert at finding his way to Trieste ... read more

Time to revive the ole travelblog for another spontaneous spring trip. Spent three great days in Ottawa with Jeff, Jennifer, Kyle and Cody. Weather wasn't exactly perfect, snow and rain Monday, but cleared off on Tuesday and finally started to warm up a bit just as I left. Surprise surprise. Monday kinda just hung around at home and went to bed early, played with the boys and such. Tuesday dropped Jeff off at work and had the downtown rush hour driving experience, which I should say wasn't too bad at all. Went to the Canadian War Museum which was interesting. Five sections, one for old wars, one for each world war, then one for korean/cold wars, and one about the Canadian place in currentish world affairs. ok thats four and i can't remember the last. oops. ... read more
