What is up with the weather? It felt cold and blowy as we walked from the castle at Miramare to the bus stop where we caught the number 6 into the city. Trieste is an important city but one that most visitors seem to by pass. We never have understood why that should be. Trieste is a city and seaport in northeastern Italy situated on the Adriatic which today looked grey. It is almost cheek by jowl with Slovenia its neighbour and to Croatia some 19 miles away. It feels less Italian and more Slavic at times. It is a city that has been influenced by its location at the crossroads of so many cultures , Latin, Slavic and Germanic. It is a large city but not an unmanageable one. From the rather scruffy bus station ... read more

My knee seems fine Hallelujah . It hurts but not enough to put me out of business. So it’s a saying that comes to mind again. Ripping todays thought of the day off the calendar Thich Nhat Hahn said “Waking up this morning I smile. Twenty four brand new hours before me. I vow to live it fully in each moment . Bad knee and bruising or not – it’s Miramare or bust. Glenn has always wanted to see this castle but never quite made it. It is not the easiest in a motorhome to get to so we knew we needed the bus/buses. We managed to purchase a ticket from Sistiana Camping Mare Pinea to the nearest stop to the castle . This still meant a 20 minute walk for Hopalong Cassidy. I had to ... read more

It’s our last day in the Veneto region today and finally the temperatures have dropped into the 20s. Our morning visit was to Pordenone which is a largish, modern, University town further inland from Portogruaro. We took a shot that we were close to the town centre and parked in a parking building to walk into town. A good choice since it was only two blocks away. Daph managed to find a “Wind” shop to sort out her phone problems (still) and had to buy a plan to allow her to phone out and send texts out. With the money already paid for a SIM card, loading money, registering etc you would have thought enough had already been paid. However, we then found that a one month plan was the best option but now another E40. ... read more

We checked out our very nice accommodation and figured that it would be worth while visiting in another few years when the other half of the house/mansion has been renovated. The half already done is very tastefully done and lacking nothing in the way of luxuries. We had a very nice breakfast outside Villa Trovatore then packed and left for an exploration of Aquileia for a couple of hours. This town is very worthwhile visiting if you want to skip visiting Rome. It has the remains of the original shipping canals and store houses alongside, a forum, a museum housing many tombs and details of the history and a magnificent 1700 year old Basilica. The tiled floor in the Basilica is worth visiting just to see the mosaics of people, animals, fish and other designs. This ... read more

Yesterday was a travelling day. We bussed from Budapest to Vienna (2hr 40min), picked up our rental car from the airport then drove 320kms to Lake Wortherse where we stayed in an Ibis Hotel at a Rest Place stop along the autobahn. It was a strange setup with a Marche restaurant and shop with the hotel attached looking out over the lake. It had a lovely view and was comfortable for the night. Today with Neil as the driver, we drove firstly to Daniele del Fruili where we had a lunch of prosciutto and a platter. We had been here before and thought Neil and Karilyn would enjoy the town known for it’s prosciutto bars and old town upon a hill just before it drops down onto the plains. We had a wonderful meal of a ... read more

Our base for the next night was to be Camping Acquilea . Glenn has been here more times than he cares to remember . This is my second visit. The camping site is much as it was three years ago when we last visited. Mr Adonis was still there, still tending to his pool but this time round he looked much older and the sun had not been kind to him. The pool was not open as he and his wife were trying to stop water leaching out and ground water from leaching in. It seemed like they were trying to paint the Forth Road Bridge and were getting nowhere. The facilities were closed as it was early in the season. Later a café and a small shop would open. The toilets were less clean than ... read more

Saturday September 27 - Venice Our last full day in Italy. Dan and Jane headed out early to get a jump on shopping and Sherry and I took our time to plan a walk around the quiet part of Venice. We headed from our hotel and located a restaurant for dinner that night. We were meeting our friends Phil and LeeAnne Larsen who were flying in this afternoon. We found a delightful street side restaurant called da Roberto's. We made a reservation for six for 7:00 pm and headed to the canal. Once on the canal we headed upstream against the tide of people heading to St. Marks and all the shopping. We kept walking east and found the quiet side of Venice. Very romantic, open sidewalks with grass and trees. We saw children playing soccer, ... read more

September 26 – Manarolla to Florence to Venice We had to say goodbye to our favorite location this morning. We thoroughly enjoyed our little rooms and roof top terrace at Manarolla. The late afternoon swim and walking up to the small grocery store and picking up our bread, meat, cheese, wine, and of course Pringles!. We also completed our nights with a beautiful sunset and several games of 500. We left very early (7:15 am) to meet our driver back to Florence. A quiet ride out of the sleepy seaside Cinque Terre to the hustle and bustle of Florence. We arrived in Florence an hour early and prepared to meet our 10:30 train to Venice. Right on time after we had a chance to use the restroom or WC, as they call them in Italy. You ... read more

May, glorious May, the month of my birthday (which was spent relaxing in a lovely campsite run by a nice Dutch couple in the hills of Rimmini near the town of Perticara). However, before then we explored the “heel” of Italy which consists of the mouth-filling regions of Calabria, Basilicata and Puglia. The first highlight of the month was the town of Matera and a two night stay at a peaceful campsite in the Murgia Matera NP which was only a short walk over the plateau to the gorge across which there are fabulous views of the old town and the ancient houses built into the rock. These houses were a qhetto and still occupied until the 1950’s when the people were forcibly relocated. We also had fine views of at least 30 Lesser Kestrel which ... read more

"It was about a 2 hour drive to get to Sacile which is where I was born so we went to my hospital to take a couple pictures. Then we went to Vitor's old school. We could not go onto the military base, but we saw it. Next, we went to our old house in Grizzo. We played on the swing set. Vitor told me a story about finding a snake on the stairs and my mom put it into alcohol. Then we went to our friend's Mara and Nicola's house. They have 2 kids named Greta and Zaira. It was very fun. We went for hot chocolate at a little place. Then we went to their house that they will be moving to. Then when Nicola came home, we went to Barcis Lake. It was ... read more
