The logistics in the large breakfast room at the hotel are a bit interesting. The designers apparently thought it was a good idea to put the milk as far away as possible from the cereal, and the butter and marmalade as far away as possible from the toaster, so I guess they figured the main priority should be for the guests to get some early morning exercise. At least the toaster’s next to the bread, but that doesn’t mean an end to the morning’s challenges. The toaster’s one of the stranger contraptions I've come across in our travels. You’ve got to load the bread into a steel clamp type arrangement before putting it into the toaster, and if you only remember to turn on one of the elements it comes out only toasted on one side. ... read more

Today we travel a hundred or so kilometres south-east to the town of Rimini on Italy’s Adriatic Coast. Rentable apartments seemed to be in short supply when we booked, so we’re staying at a beachfront hotel. There wasn’t any shortage of those … seemingly hundreds to choose from. We emerge onto our top floor terrace to see … well that would be an endless sea of beach umbrellas and sunlounges packed onto an also seemingly endless stretch of sand, with scarcely a gap between them for as far as we can see in both directions. If this isn’t home to the world’s largest beach umbrella/sunlounge population I’d like to know what is. They say you can see the Great Barrier Reef from outer space. I don’t remember reading anything similar about the Great Rimini Sunlounge and ... read more

Dear All Greetings, or saluti! I have just returned from my final mini-trip of this winter period of travel, having seen my last one of Europe's micro-states. My theme for these last couple of months has been to visit my three remaining European micro-states, out of six in total. I had already been to the Vatican, Andorra and Malta, and this February half-term after having visited Monaco and Liechtenstein over the Christmas holidays, I was heading to San Marino! Well, in actual fact, I was heading to Bologna, to first take a train to Rimini for a couple of nights, then on to San Marino for two more, before my final night in Bologna. This is my first of two blog entries relating my time there, and will recount my adventures in Rimini at the beginning ... read more

For our final day in Rimini we had booked a couple of sun beds and an umbrella on beach 21, the section allocated to our hotel. As the majority of this day was spent at the beach, where I had my eyes closed most of the time, I have merged today with tomorrow’s trip to Bologna and the following day - our journey home, otherwise the day’s blog would probably be ending after the next few paragraphs. We arrived at around 10:30 and were taken down a narrow boardwalk toward the sea. We were shown to a couple of sunbeds on the front row. These were ours for the day. We could come and go as we pleased. This is a highly organised business as there was an attendant at either end of the beach, making ... read more

After a decent night’s sleep, we both woke refreshed after the long day we experienced yesterday. Breakfast, normally a hot and cold buffet, was waitress service only. Menus were placed at each table and orders taken accordingly. It was basic but adequate. At least with this service, one can exercise a certain amount of portion control. Neither of us had any complaint about this new procedure. This morning we decided to familiarise ourselves with our first time visit to Rimini by visiting the old town. The hotel couldn’t provide a map so on retracing yesterday’s footstep back to the railway station, we called in to the tourist information who duly obliged. While we were here, we enquired about buses to San Marino. During our research, we had learned that the Bonelli Bus, the company that provides ... read more

The virus has been around for seven months now. The UK has recently relaxed its lockdown rules. The European infection rate declined during the lock down. However, since the reopening of most businesses, the infection rate has started to creep up from three to four hundred new cases per day to just over one thousand. At a time when certain European countries seem to be having a ‘second wave’ and they have now appeared on the UK’s ‘naughty’ list, Italy has remained consistently low with two to three hundred new infections per day and as for their deaths; the daily count can be counted on one hand even if you’d lost you thumb in a freak lumberjacking accident!! Spain, France and Belgium are countries that require self-isolation for fourteen days on return to the UK. Our ... read more

Are we RICH? In order to take a trip like this? We don’t consider ourselves rich, but we are grateful that we can afford to pay our credit card bill each month. For timely payments, Capitol One grants us options: points or cash back. We choose points. We saved until we had enough points to pay for both airline fares AND a rental car for three months. Through trustedhousesitters.com, we found a person to care for our dogs in exchange for a place to stay for three months. Through SERVAS, we meet people in their own environments. And when all else fails, we use booking.com to find a really cheap place to stay...we aim for under $50/night, and that often, but not always, includes breakfast. We carry a box of cereal, cheese, etc., and of course, ... read more

The job, as referred to in the title, was a mission to get around mostly unfamiliar terrain in Italy in typical no-stone-left-unturned style. A flight into Bologna set the scene, and a quick zip to Bologna central station provided the first leg of the journey - an hour-long train ride to Ravenna, and the chance to experience a snapshot of what Ravenna has to offer. Not exactly firmly on the tourist radar, Ravenna is a compact enough Italian city famous for two factors - its stunning mosaics, and association with Dante Alighieri, the famed Italian writer. A breeze through the streets of Ravenna will reveal evidence of the artistic mosaic designs which decorate the interiors of a couple of prominent buildings, mausoleums and Basilicas alike. The tomb of Dante is a... read more

Still smarting from yesterday's experience, I decided I should take along a jacket 'just in case' the weather decided to turn on us. Indeed, although it was neither raining nor cold when we left, the forecast called for a thunderstorm in the afternoon and I knew that either of those conditions might change at any time. In the absence of any storage space in my rental bike's modest seatpost bag (which was filled to capacity with only a spare tube), I was attempting to store/stuff my jacket under the seat between the rails when our guide Bartolo interceded to offer a pro tip, the results of which can be seen in the accompanying (if not very flattering) photo. And then we were off again. Things were pleasant enough for the first 3 hours: although the roads ... read more

Saturday February 13, 2016 - 8pm - In Rimini, I was being picked up by my airbnb host, Anchise, at the supermarket just outside the train station. I saw someone at the platform who looked like him, but he didn’t say anything so I continued to the supermarket. Of course, it was him and he came just behind me. He is Italian and his wife Rita is German. We had a nice chat in limited English on the way home and then he showed me how everything worked and told me where to get the bus to San Marino in the morning. The grocery store nearby was closed, so they gave me directions to a large shopping mall about 15 minutes walk away, and I headed there to get some food for breakfast the next day. ... read more
