Geo: 40.6263, 14.3757 We had organised for Rainbow Limos, who did our transfers, to take us on a day trip along the Amalfi Coast today. Luckily the weather was gorgeous, sunny and pleasant.Alberico was our driver this time and he picked us up bang on time. First of all we headed to Positano. What a lovely little town! Alberico called ahead to organise a parking spot, demonstrating the benefits of using a driver, rather than hiring a car. This was the very end of the season yet parking would have been close to impossible without Albertico's contacts. We spent an hour or so wandering up and down the steep streets, buying a couple of local trinkets, before heading back to the car.We decided to head up to Ravello next for lunch and views and to see ... read more

Geo: 40.6263, 14.3757Today was a very lazy day. We got up later than we have been on this trip and had a very leisurely breakfast on the terrace looking at the stunning view. Breakfast, like everything else at Bellevue Syrene was excellent. We then spent the morning wandering around the town of Sorrento. First stop was to find a laundromat, which was successful. This was followed by taking the hotel's private lift down to the "beach" which was actually floating pontoons with sunbeds! We wandered along the short until we finally hit the marina where we made enquiries about travelling to Capri later in the week.We returned to Bellevue Syrene for a delicious club sandwich at La Pergola. The restaurant was set up much more casually for lunch than it had been last night, but the views ... read more

Geo: 40.6263, 14.3757Today we left Rome and caught a taxi to the station to board our train to Naples. We were heading for Sorrento, the last stop on our amazing holiday, before coming back to Rome next week for our flight home. The train was excellent and very fast and we were met at Naples station by Luciano of Rainbow Limos. I had read about Rainbow Limos on TripAdvisor and we were so glad we booked with them. It is a family owned and run company and they all take their jobs very seriously. Luciano was the future son in law of the family. Here is my review of Rainbow Limos: His car, a Mercedes, was immaculate and there were lollies and cold water. He drove us to Pompeii, pointed out sights alo... read more

Geo: 40.6263, 14.3757One thing we've come to learn is that you really don't need a car when you get to the Amalfi. It cost us 20 euro a day to park it whilst staying in the town. Today we drove to Sorrento along the coast via Praino and Positano, although couldn't stop to visit as the parking is atrocious. A very scenic route, sea views all the way and houses clinging to the hillsides. We got to the villa and settled in before walking into the centre (about 3 miles) from our villa, someone's family home with a pool and most importantly off-street parking. We explored the narrow streets (a common theme) and people watched from a cafe eating pizza and pasta. Afterwards we sat reading our books overlooking the harbour with Naples and Vesuvius in ... read more

Sunday September 21, 2014 Sorrento – Isle of Capri We started our morning with a wonderful breakfast at our hotel, with fresh pastries, fruit and great coffee – Americano…they call it very strong. We hiked down the hill and down to the marina to catch our boat to the island. The cruise takes about 20 minutes and lands you on the north side of the island at marina Grande. Dan put together our hike to the middle part of the island, the start of many stairs for the day. The weather was beautiful and many people arriving and leaving from the Marina. The island is very large and rocky and beautiful. With many narrow paths and a variety of flowers and trees. The whole Amafli coast is noted for lemons. We have attached a picture of ... read more

Saturday September 20, 2004 Rome to Naples to Pompeii and Sorrento We finished our stay in Rome with an early breakfast at our Rome hotel Capo Africa. Great location and very nice…Our tour company had a driver for us and quick ride to the train terminal. We of course got on the wrong train to Naples but made it there successfully. We met our Naples driver and he got us to Pompeii for the tour of the city buried in ash from the volcano Vesuvius. The city itself was buried in 30’ of ash from the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius on August of 79 A.D. The citizens that could escape the ash cloud and poisonous gas died in their homes when the roofs collapsed. Once they discovered the buried city in the 1700’s, the ash was ... read more

Sorrento is another world from Sicily. I spent some time in Sicily brainstorming with Len ways to buff up the tourist industry in Sciacca, but now I take it all back. Sorrento is a BEAUTIFUL city. But it is completely dominated by and caters to its tourists, which to me takes away from its charm. Every interaction I have feels more like a transaction of some kind, not an exchange. That being said, it's gorgeous and has everything a person who dreams of Italy dreams of. I'm so glad I'm here. Although I prefer to think of myself as a traveler rather than a tourist, once you accept a place like Sorrento for what it is, you can enjoy the ride more. Like, don't go to Disneyland if you hate children and standing in line. However, ... read more

Naples to Sorrento After hearing so many travellers’ tales about the Regional Train from Naples to Sorrento, I was nervous right from the start. Even the station attendant shouted to us as we went through the ticket barrier, “Watch out for pick pockets!” The regional train is beneath the Napali Centrale link from Rome and the escalator wasn’t working. On the station a young girl came up to me asking for money. Her average looking family, were standing nearby and didn’t call her back. Alarm bells were ringing. The train pulled out of the station packed to the rafters. We had to get on with our entire luggage and we were separated right from the start. “Watch out for pick pockets, watch out for Gypsies” I was told. There was even a pictogram on the train ... read more

Day 7, May 19 – Sorrento & Naples Our plan while in Sorrento was to visit Naples and Pompeii on day trips. Since Naples is the birthplace of pizza Jim just had to go to see how the master pizza bakers make a true Neapolitan thin crust pizza. From all the information we read in guidebooks, taking the commuter train from Sorrento to Naples was not safe so we decided to take the ferry from Sorrento to Naples, which is a 30-minute trip. Naples is known for the best pizza in the world but also a city that has a high crime rate, high unemployment, and not very clean. With all that to consider we decided to make the trip (translation – Jim had to have a pizza from Naples). The ferries are usually on time ... read more
