The miserable weather that dogged us yesterday gave way to clear, sunny skies today, and the thermometer inched its way up to the mid-60s later in the afternoon. So we set out around 10:30 in the morning, walking to the nearby Parco di Villa Fiorentino, a small park toward the western end of Corso Italia. This park is the site of a villa that now houses a foundation where various cultural events and exhibitions take place. The well-manicured grounds are planted with a variety of plants and flowers, including some lemon and orange trees, and a children's playground occupies a portion of the site. The park was virtually empty when we arrived, and would be an ideal place to relax or bring a picnic lunch. After visiting the park, Dee wanted to find the housewares store ... read more

We had hoped to do some more exploring around town today, but the weather in Sorrento has turned chilly and windy, with overcast skies and rain in the forecast for this afternoon. The temperature this afternoon dropped to 47 degrees Fahrenheit! So we decided to stay in our nest rather than struggle with the inclement conditions. Sorrento is a small coastal town in southwestern Italy, facing the Bay of Naples on the Sorrentine Peninsula. It sits atop cliffs that separate the town from two small marinas, and is known for its scenic water views and Piazza Tasso, the cafe-lined main square. The historic center is a maze of narrow streets and alleys that are usually clogged with visitors during the tourist season. Sorrento is the jumping-off point for tours of the famed Amalfi Drive, the coastal ... read more

Yesterday was a day of rest and recuperation, as we're still struggling to recover our "mojo" after a tiring day of overseas travel. Our diurnal rhythms are way out-of-whack, with sleeping schedules completely disrupted. So we decided to lay low all day, occupying ourselves with unpacking, organizing clothing and personal items for a two-month stay, and familiarizing ourselves with the apartment. One of the benefits of extended stays when traveling is the lack of urgency to see and do everything as quickly as possible, so we have far fewer deadlines and time constraints with which to contend. Late this morning we finally ventured out, the primary mission being to forage for groceries. First we scouted out a butcher shop just a block away from our apartment, where Dee found some basic items and very friendly service. ... read more

Playing practical jokes on April 1st is a tradition in Italy in the same manner as many other countries, although in Italy the day is called Pesce d’Aprile (April’s Fish) rather than April Fools’ Day. The most common trick apparently involves sticking a cut-out picture of a fish on the back of an unsuspecting ‘victim’, and then watching how long it takes for him (or her) to discover the prank. However, as it turned out, Dee and I were "pranked" in an altogether different way as we embarked on Odyssey 2023. We had an auspicious start to our journey, as the Delta flight from Daytona Beach was a piece of cake, with TSA's Security screening a breeze. But after we landed in Atlanta to make the connection for the Delta flight to Rome, things began to ... read more

You can return to the text anytime. Day 5 Friday 28th October: having become disenchanted with local travel following our experiences on the Amalfi Coast and Herculaneum we decided that the best thing to do would be to stay overnight in Sorrento town rather than being beholden to the hotel shuttle bus timings. So Jane booked a "luxury sea view room" in the rather opulent Imperial Hotel Tramontano, one of the grand hotels which line the cliffs above Sorrento's beaches and harbours. The hotel wasn't as grand as we'd ... read more

For those of you who have got the Tina Arena reference in the title...congratulations, you are old and probably spent some time in Australia and New Zealand in the 90s. It was the first thing that came to mind when I found out I was going to be staying in Sorrento on our romantic getaway to Italy and I had assumed that Ms. Arena was singing about this beautiful cliffside town. Turns out she was singing about her childhood town in Victoria, Australia, but I digress... Naples, Pompeii and the Amalfi Coast have long been on my hitlist but the Amalfi in particular is what many would deem a romantic spot, so I almost deliberately avoided it during my single days. Now, however, I no longer have that excuse, so I can now start checking off ... read more

Cet hôtel, à part ... read more

Day 9 : Saturday 14 September 2019 : Sorrento and Baths of Queen Giovanni Originally we were supposed to head past Amalfi to do the Northern part of the coast, but after our disastrous bus trip and our great day anyway, we agreed not to go back. Decided to keep it chill and walk to the ‘Baths of Queen Giovanni’. Not sure what it is, but seems like a little swimming hole with some ruins. Sleep in, did the washing and hung it outside the window like a true Italian (don’t want to drop it tho) and late morning headed out for our walk. Walking upwards, there were stunning views of Sorrento to be had. We took the skinny road, and then the part with no path or road verge on bends with cars flying by…..us ... read more

Day 6 : Wednesday 11 September 2019 : Rome to Sorrento Took the bus (€1.50pp) to the train station – pretty easy Train (AUD120 prebooked) was awesome, fast (300km/hr Frecciarossa) and comfortable. Hardest part was buying the tickets to get from Naples (main station) to Sorrento on the local EAV train. Finally found them at a newsagent (€4pp). Down to the platform and 5 mins before the train, Ella has to wee. We chose to miss the train (although I'm pretty angry) and went to find the toilet. Didn’t bother to rush as we’d missed the train by a long shot. As we come down the stairs, we find out the train has only just pulled out but was packed to the rafters….this could be a challenge with our bags. The next train arrived 5 minutes ... read more

My only aim today was to find a beachside place where I could hire a chair and have a swim. After my breakfast at the hotel I decided to walk to the Marina Grande - this is a smaller, more historic marina which Chiara from the hotel had told me about. It was only a fifteen minute walk but I stopped for some photos along the way. It really was a beautiful area and not as hectic as the main marina and beach area. I choose a place that had a long jetty and hired a sun lounge for €10 - much cheaper than anywhere else I have been. It was a really nice place too with good stairs down to the water which made it easy for getting in and out of the sea. Not ... read more
