No need to rush to get up this morning - yay! I love this little boutique hotel - my room is super cute and the bathroom is lovely. My breakfast was ready for me at 9:30 and I was the only person in the breakfast room. Going by the number of tables, I think there are only 5, maybe 6, rooms. I would certainly recommend anyone stay at the Twice-Naples Hotel. After breakfast I checked out. The girl in reception was so lovely, she even wanted a photo with me before I left. I decided to walk to the Central Train station as i knew I just needed to stay on the main road my hotel was on. It was a lot easier doing the walk back to the station than it was on my arrival. ... read more

Dee and I finally caught a break with the weather, as overcast skies gave way to some sunshine today. By mid-afternoon it was downright pleasant, with the temperature reaching 59 degrees, under partly sunny skies, and light winds. Still jacket and scarf weather, but quite comfortable for walking. We've wanted to try riding the train from Piano di Sorrento into Sorrento, saving us a 3-mile hike. The station is a 15-minute walk from our apartment, and after we arrived we purchased roundtrip tickets for 5.20 euros (about $6.75), a real bargain compared to a taxi fare of $40! We missed the first train, after waiting on the wrong track(!), but boarded the next one about 20 minutes later. This train runs between Naples and Sorrento, with numerous stops along the way, including Pompeii. It's very popular ... read more

The weather looked promising early this morning, with temperatures predicted to be in the upper 50s under partly sunny skies, so we contacted Francesco for a ride into Sorrento at around 11 AM. After a brief stop to meet the chef and owner of Il Convivio, a nearby restaurant where he recommended we have lunch today, Francesco dropped us off at the museum entrance. The Museo Correale is housed in an 18th-century villa surrounded by a splendid citrus garden. It formerly belonged to the Correale di Terranova family, a noble family with wide cultural interests, who resided in both Naples and Sorrento. The last descendants of the family bequeathed the villa and their extensive art collection to the city, and the museum opened to the public in 1924. The museum consists of 24 rooms, distributed on ... read more

A great day out to Sorrento. Caught the train passing through from Napoli. An older lady travelling by herself proceeded to tell us at great Italian lengths in Italian all the stops we needed to pass through before we got off....we must really stand out! Out to the tourist craze....can't imagine what it would be like in the height of the season...it was madness. Beautiful place high above the sea, the deep gorges and cliffs making for natural defence. A spetacular view over the large Bay of Napoli. The historic center is a warren of narrow alleys that's home to the Chiesa di San Francesco, a 14th-century church with a tranquil cloister. We wandered the alleyways in the shade...there was a definite presence of British tourists and the locals were well in catering for them. A ... read more

I had a big day yesterday climbing volcanoes, well one volcano anyway, so we sleep in and decide on a relaxing day. We head into a shopping area near the hotel and Issy spies a Japanese restaurant. I think this might be the first one she's seen since we left home. The drool starts to appear at the corners of her mouth. It seems that it's closed now. I manage to stop her from breaking down the door, but I'm fairly sure we'll be back here later, and there might be violence if it's not open then. It seems someone before us may have had similar thoughts. A large area outside the restaurant is wrapped in police tape, and multiple members of the constabulary are in attendance. We briefly consider asking one of them what's happened ... read more

Getting to Sorrento was a bit of a mission. The train we took stopped at Naples, so we had to get a local train from Naples to Sorrento. That train was very humid and quite full. And it took an hour and a half, a somewhat unpleasant ride some might say. Upon arriving in Sorrento, we caught a local bus to our campsite which was located up a hill and a few windy roads. Our cabin was also up a hill. There were the most lovely of views from our deck though of the rugged cliffs and coastline, peppered with terraced, colourful housing. It is probably the best view I've had yet from my accommodation site. That evening we did laundry and what Bex and I refer to as "Life Admin", or trip sorting. We went ... read more

We had a big day yesterday so we decide not to do too much today. We head off on a two kilometre or so hike towards towards Bagni della Regina Giovanna, which TripAdvisor claims is the number one place to visit here in Sorrento. We stroll through town again along Via San Cesareo. There's limoncello oozing from every shopfront, and the whole place smells like lemons. I think someone might have slipped something into the soil - the lemons are more than twice the size of the ones back home - somewhere between a baseball and a soccer ball. The views from the coast above Marina Grande back towards Sorrento are excellent. Eventually the footpath along the coast road, Via Capo, runs out and we’re left to share a busy lane with the traffic. The road‘s ... read more

I wonder if I'll be allowed into the restaurant for breakfast wearing shorts. Issy says that she‘ll pass on breakfast so I head off on my own. The waiters are all still wearing tuxedos, but there seem to be other people wearing shorts, so I relax a bit. There's a sign on the toaster saying that you're only allowed to put sliced bread into it. I wonder what other sort of bread anyone might contemplate trying to jam into a toaster. I'm pretty sure that a full loaf wouldn't fit. It‘s very quiet until the silence is broken by an American lady shouting "where can I get some coffee honey" across the room to one of the older waiters. I suspect he’s not all that accustomed to being addressed as "honey". We head off to explore ... read more

The alarm goes off at 3.45am. Perhaps unsurprisingly there doesn't seem to be a lot going on in Assos at this time of the morning. We head off on the long and windy road back to the airport. The mountain goats seem to like standing in the middle of the road even more at this time of the morning, and the black ones in particular are very hard to see. We pass the lookout where we got stunning views down over Myrtos Beach a few days ago. There’s a man standing there next to his car in the pitch darkness looking at the view. I'm not sure what he can see. Maybe he's got some of those night vision goggles that they use in the movies. I thought they were only good for detecting people; I'm ... read more

This is my last blog of the trip, and though I started it on the plane ride home (so hard to find time to blog on such a busy trip!), I'm finishing it sitting in my house in Washington, very much missing the sunny 70s-80s weather, and all the Italians! They really are my people. Pushy and all :) Our final adventure started in Sorrento. It's connected to Naples by land, but it's on a bit of a peninsula that's about equidistant over water to Naples. But Naples was north, and we were basing in Sorrento to go south. Unless you are honeymooning I would definitely base in Sorrento and just do a day tour down the coast. While Sorrento is not huge, Positano and Amalfi are tiny, and just about the only thing to do ... read more
