Geo: 40.6299, 14.4863Our boat arrived in Napoli early this morning. Kamie & I were awake before 6am. We were showered and out the door at 7:30am. We had a private tour of 8 people scheduled for today. We met everyone in the main lobby of the ship and they were all very nice people. We walked off the ship and Tony was standing there - an adorable, short Italian man - with a sign with my name on it and a silver Mercedes van. Nice. We all loaded-up and drove... and drove... and drove. Today we went from Napoli to Sorrento to Positano to the actual town of Amalfi and on to Ravello.... we drove through the entire Amalfi Coast. We had short stops along the way for the breathtaking views and 1-hour stops in Positano, ... read more

A few thoughts Visiting Positano this time of year is pretty good. Some of the restaurants and hotels are not yet open for the season but many good ones are and you don't usually need reservations. The temp can require a light jacket or fleece at times, but it is very pleasant generally, particularly in the sun. You are glad of the cooler temps when climbing the hill once or twice a day. Looks like everyone will be open around the 15th. You can stay at the beach area, and then you have to walk up to much of the shopping and restaurants. You can stay higher and then you must walk down to many good restaurants and shopping. No matter where you stay you are going to be walking up and down steep hills a ... read more

Today started a little earlier. Lots earlier in fact. Breakfast was on the hotel's outside terrace, looking out over the Gulf of Salerno. Pretty spectacular setting. After a walk of a few minutes down the hill, you can catch a bus up to Montepertuso and Nocelle. The alternative is to take steps up to Montepertuso and then a 20 minute gentle hike over to Nocelle, where you access the Footpath of the Gods. Or so I am told. The bus seemed like a better idea. Forget Richard Petty, forget Dale Earnhardt Jr., forget Jimmy Johnson. These bus drivers are hands down the best drivers in the world. Several times a day, they wrestle these buses up twisting mountain roads that are AT NO TIME wider than half the width of the bus. With parked cars on ... read more

Awakening at 4 A.M. despite a sleeping pill proved to be a losing proposition, and only lasted through an hour or more of e-mails etc. when next I became aware, it was 11:30, and so breakfast became lunch With added cappuccino. Actually, a glass of Greco di Tufo goes very nicely with cappuccino and spaghetti con agile, olio, y pepperoncini. The heart shape in the milk froth shaped the morning actually early afternoon). the free glass of limoncello may have been a little much for starting that day, but what the heck - it was forced on me. The walk down into the heart of town is manageable, although coming back up was a little more challenging. As always in Positano, the views are spectacular. The hillsides are covered with buildings and terraces for growing lemons. ... read more

And this is our hotel in Positano on the Amalfi Coast: http://www.hotelposeidonpositano.it/ Can't you just feel the ocean breeze and smell the salty air? Tom is a bit nervous about heights, I think he may need to get over that during the week we are there! 12 days ..... Ciao!... read more

Another relaxing beach day today. There are two beach in Positano, one is more popular than the other as it is close to the main city centre with all of the shops and restaurants. Antonio, our concierge at the hotel told us to go to the second beach as the hotel also has an "agreement" and the chairs are cheaper to rent. The water was amazing. It was like nothing I have ever seen. Definitely more beautiful than the beach in Barcelona and much less crowed. I wish we could have stayed a couple more days just to be at the beach. I like sightseeing but I think the beach there was one of my favorite parts of the trip so far even though Anacapri and Capri were amazing. Plus the food at the restaurant was ... read more

Capri and Ana Capri tours today!!! I'm sorry this is taking me so long to write but so much happened that I could probably write a book about it. I will try not to go into too much detail because the pictures will speak for themselves. The tour was probably one of the most amazing ventures for all of us. I'm not one for big crowds and being herded like caddle through tiny street packed with busses BUT it was worth it because everything about the tour was spectactular. We started off on an insnaely early/terrifying cab ride down the mountain side to the city of Sorrento. Sorrento is definitely more spacioius than Positano but its not as high so the view is no where near beautiful. We were also told that Sorrento has an exciting ... read more

Another lovely day on the water. Today we were on the Cassiopea boat for our trip to Amalfi. Stefano was our pilot again, and while there was less wind today, the seas were very high. The fun thing about these rubber boats is that they can hug the shoreline very closely, which is what we did all the way to Minore, the next little town past Amalfi. Along the way we saw Praiano and some other little towns, many of them with old Roman or Norman walls and buildings. It’s really beautiful to see the view from the sea, where the waves were pounding against the cliffs. This part of Italy seems as if it’s like a giant cliff that continues straight into the water from the land, with huge vertical drops. The waves crash against ... read more

We woke up to a rather cool, brisk morning. Our hostess, Tiziana, had breakfast served to us on our balcony, allowing us to take in the early-morning view of Positano freshly lit by the morning light. Chonsa and I ate breakfast first, while Liliana stayed asleep until later. We were supposed to go to Capri today on a boat tour with a group called Cassiopea, but I asked Tiziana to call them to ask if the tour was still on. On Saturday afternoon, I had spoken to Roberto, one of Cassiopea’s owners and he had told me that the weather forecast predicted high winds, which meant there was a strong likelihood that we would not be able to go to Capri. As it turned out, he was right. While it is relatively calm in Positano, the ... read more
