This entry is long. You can do a lot in 5 days. First of all, allow me to recommend the Amalfi Coast. Second, let me suggest the southern coast. As spectacular as the north coast is around Sorrento, the south side is somehow five times more spectacular, and the bus ride there is incredible! I'm looking forward to telling you all about it. But first, a couple of adventures I forgot to mention about Rome: During our second night in the hostel, I got up to go to the bathroom, but the power must have gone out, or maybe they shut it off, I don't know. Also the bathroom had no windows. I wasn't too concerned initially, and assumed that the small amount of light coming in from the main room would bleed through the crack ... read more

Well, we’ve been on the Amalfitana Coast for about 5 days now. We’ve been staying in Praiano, a little village between Amalfi and Positano. It’s much better priced here than in the tourist hotspots. The hotel, the Margherita, is very nice and very clean with a pool and a good restaurant. It’s family run and the owners are helpful. We’re on the 3rd floor facing the Mediterranean. We’re actually facing SSE in a large protected bay. The weather has been progressively better and better. Today, it’s positively hot but the thermometer is still in the 20’s. Over the last few days, we have explored the coastline, firstly by bus and then, when the confidence on the roads grew, by our car. Amalfi, itself, is quite a small town, but with a good sized harbour. The best ... read more

It had reached that time - our wedding was finally upon us and we along with 19 of our closest family and friends all descended upon Positano on the Amalfi Coast in Italy for a week of celebration and for Ange and I to tie the knot. We had people coming from Australia and the United Kingdom to join us, and beside the excitement of our wedding, it was great to have everyone together, especially since many of them we had not seen for over 12 months. Half of us where staying at Villa Oliviero, an absolutely stunning villa hanging on the edge of the cliffs overlooking Positano itself. It truely was an indulgent week in an amazing place. The villa offered everything - 6 bedrooms over 4 split levels, a pool, jacuzzi, gardens, two maids ... read more

My sister and I travelled to Positano last year. We got there end of June - stayed for 3 nights and loved every bit of it. It's such a relaxed, cosmopolitan and beautiful place. I have travelled a fair bit and seen some beautiful places but Positano took my breath away....i'm in love ;-) We got there from Naples - stayed there for a night (not recommended). We didn't know too much about Naples ...i had seen a report on an Australian TV show "The Great Outdoors" and it seemed ok ....busy and dirty but no where in the report did they mention that it could be quite dangerous. We flew into Naples from London - got there at around 8 and as soon as we got our bags we started looking around for a way ... read more

We were on a mission - we had decided that we wanted to get married in Positano on the Amalfi Coast in Italy - yet we had never been and with the big day fast approaching (in wedding planning terms) we ducked off for a long weekend to meet up with our wedding planner and scout various wedding venues around Positano. We flew out early Friday and after a rather bumpy flight we arrived in Naples. Cynthia (our wedding planner) had conveniently arranged for a car service to pick us up which made for a completely enjoyable and hassle free trip from Naples to Positano. As we sat back in the big comfy seats of the Mercedes, our driver (and to him I apoligise as Ange and I keep forgetting his name) was amazing and gave ... read more

6th October 2007 - Farewell Positano We said our farewells to Positano, definitely one of the more magical places I have visited. I hope to return to one day. Melissa entrusted her box of belongings to the Italian Postal service. We made the trek back to the ferry wharf with our luggage, and it just started lightly raining. Positano was obviously sad to see us leave. Did the trip back to Rome, via Naples as before, except that Melissa wanted to skip the tram ride in favor of a taxi. Back in Rome we stayed at the Holiday Inn near the airport. This would not have been my first pick of places to stay, but we had an early flight in the morning and it was close to the airport. We had dinner at the hotel ... read more

We took a boat ride along the coast on board a fishing boat with the skipper Salvatoro. Helping out on the cruise was a funny old chook, Gloria, who was in her 70’s and originally from some where in the mid-west of the USA. Also joining us was a local photographer, Cindy, a newly married Canadian couple and an Aussie couple. The cruise took us along the coast to Ravello, stopping along the way for swimming and sight seeing. In one of the grottos we swam in the water was so clear, when you splashed it in front of you it shimmered like turquoise crystals. We stopped for lunch along the coast and the restaurant cooked up fish that Salvatoro had caught, washed down with local vino. This was such a relaxing cruise in a small ... read more

1st October 2007 After rushing around in Rome it was good to know we had plenty of time to relax here. Weather is stunning, sunny, warm and a gentle breeze in the evening. A lot of locals told us we were lucky because it was normally a bit cooler at this time of year. Wandered about the town and found some interesting shops and galleries. Got talking with a women who was expecting her first baby, she was working in a gallery with a cat called “Phillipo”. We bought a few souvenirs and gifts, slowly making our way further up the hill from the main beach. As you climbed the hill the prices reduced and it was obviously worth the effort of the climb to discover this fact. Make sure your credit card balance is in ... read more

Is this a place where people actually live or is Positano only here for the tourists? I found myself wondering this as I watched teams of laborers carrying load after load of beer and wine by hand up the steep and narrow streets in this Mediterranean town. The town itself is situated on picturesque hillsides and clifftops overlooking the Mediterranean Sea south of Napoli on Italy's western Coast. Positano seems less popular and less well known than the largely similar but distant Cinque Terre towns to the north, but nonetheless seemed wholly consumed in the tourist trade. Positano is only accessable by road or by sea, and as I understand it the drive into Positano is quite treacherous and buses can be less than realiable and frequently overcrowded. So, we opted to arrive in Positano by ... read more

Geo: 40.2345, 14.9894I lost my Campania travelcard! I think I accidentally threw it out last night as I was cleaning out my pockets. It caused me to miss the first train to Sorrento as I was digging around looking for it. I took the train to Sorrento, and from there I took a bus to Positano. There was an idiotic UK lady sitting behind me - she kept talking to an Italian man though he kept telling her that he didn't understand English. I think she just liked the sound of her own voice. Apparently she went to the wrong town earlier because the bus never stopped at the bus station. That's hard to believe - more than likely she missed it herself. It's completely understandable ... I find bus travel to be a bit of ... read more
