I am a former IT professional, but now I'm retired and live in Hawaii, on the island of O'ahu. I've lived here for 5 years now, and I never tire of the natural beauty of the Hawaiian Islands. I love waking up to beautiful days, beautiful scenery, and great friends. But I'm glad to have some time this summer to explore Italy with my teenage daughter and her good friend. It will be great to see some of the most spectacular architecture, art, and scenery in the world.

I left the girls in Catanzaro Lido at 5:30 in the morning, because I had to fly back to the States. The first flight was a 7:15 am, and then I connected through Rome to Chicago. The girls were going to go into the mountains to see the grand opening of a play that Giacomo wrote. The play was playing at an outdoor theater, and they were going to stay in a chalet in the area. I had two flights to get to Chicago. My first flight was an Alitalia flight from Lamezzia Terme to Rome, and the next was an American Airlines flight from Rome to Chicago. Both were uneventful and I arrived in Chicago on a bright, sunny afternoon. I spoke with Liliana the next day, and she said that they ended up having ... read more

The girls woke up by 9:30 am and got dressed in their jogging clothes. They took a short jog in the pinetta after breakfast, while I went to the beach and read and swam. The water was once again calm and clear, and with a bonus--it was slightly warmer than it was yesterday. I went for another long swim and observed that there were some jellyfish, beautiful ones with long tentacles. They tended to stay near the bottom, so it was safe to swim. When I got back from my swim, Liliana and Chonsa were at the beach. We tried using the Capitano’s windsurfing board as a standup paddle board, using Liliana’s kayak’s oar as the paddle. It worked! The board doesn’t have any rudders, but it still worked. Liliana went a long way down the ... read more

We left Positano early on Tuesday morning. Ottavio, our taxi driver, was at the hotel promptly at 9 am, and we made our sad goodbyes to Tiziana and Dante (her dog). The girls would have liked to have stayed for another week (or maybe a lifetime), but it was time to move on to the south of Italy. We first stopped in Pompeii, the Roman city that was buried under the volcanic ash from an eruption of Mount Vesuvius 2,800 years ago. We had allotted about 2 hours for the tour, and we decided to use a tour guide so that we would have a better understanding for the city. We were all glad that we hired Antonio. He speaks perfect English and did a fantastic job of making this prosperous, beautiful city come alive once ... read more

Another lovely day on the water. Today we were on the Cassiopea boat for our trip to Amalfi. Stefano was our pilot again, and while there was less wind today, the seas were very high. The fun thing about these rubber boats is that they can hug the shoreline very closely, which is what we did all the way to Minore, the next little town past Amalfi. Along the way we saw Praiano and some other little towns, many of them with old Roman or Norman walls and buildings. It’s really beautiful to see the view from the sea, where the waves were pounding against the cliffs. This part of Italy seems as if it’s like a giant cliff that continues straight into the water from the land, with huge vertical drops. The waves crash against ... read more

We woke up to a rather cool, brisk morning. Our hostess, Tiziana, had breakfast served to us on our balcony, allowing us to take in the early-morning view of Positano freshly lit by the morning light. Chonsa and I ate breakfast first, while Liliana stayed asleep until later. We were supposed to go to Capri today on a boat tour with a group called Cassiopea, but I asked Tiziana to call them to ask if the tour was still on. On Saturday afternoon, I had spoken to Roberto, one of Cassiopea’s owners and he had told me that the weather forecast predicted high winds, which meant there was a strong likelihood that we would not be able to go to Capri. As it turned out, he was right. While it is relatively calm in Positano, the ... read more

Another early start for a day: we traveled from Florence to Positano today, catching a 9:10 am train that went directly to Naples. We were met by Ottavio, the driver organized by our hostess at B&B Villa Mary in Positano. The train ride was relatively short -- just two and a half hours on the high-speed train. Once in Naples, we had another hour in the car, and Ottavio pointed out the sights along the way: Vesuvius, Pompeii, the Bay of Naples, Capri, Sorrento, and finally Positano. Positano, like the towns of the Cinque Terre, is perched on a steep hillside, with lots and lots of narrow passages and stairways leading through the residences. There is just one main road that curves through Positano, and residents park in a car park in the lower part of ... read more

I woke up early -- by 6:15 am -- so that I could do an early morning hike before the girls woke up. My plan was to take the train from Monterosso to Vernazza, then take the sentiero (path) to Monterosso. By catching the 7:10 am train to Vernazza, I would have 2 hours to get back to Monterosso, wake up the girls prepare the bags for checkout and shower. I had a bit of an adventure on my way to Vernazza. I told you earlier that you have to have a ticket for the train/park access. Each ticket is for a single day, and I had purchased 3 tickets for the day before. I intended to buy 3 more tickets at the station in Monterosso before catching the 7:10 am train. But when I arrived ... read more

We woke up to a cool morning in Florence. The rains from the night before brought in cooler air, and it was fresh and almost chilly when we went out to get our breakfast at the local bar. Our train departed at 10:28 am, so we were at the station by 10. I’ve found that it helps to have an extra bit of time to make sure we know where the Binario (track) is for our particular train, and then lug our suitcases to the track. Speaking of suitcases -- although I told the girls to pack light, I didn’t pack as lightly as I should have. My rolling suitcase weighs about 1000 pounds, and lugging it in and out of train stations and up the inevitable flights of stairs we find separating the binarios is ... read more

I went on an exploratory walk early on Tuesday morning, allowing the girls to sleep until later. I wanted to see the Piazalle di Michelangelo, a park on the opposite of the Arno from our hotel. Claudio, our host at the B&B, had recommended that we check it out if we wanted to see an exceptional view of Florence. I had asked the girls on Monday if they wanted to jog there, but they declined. I was out of the hotel shortly after 7 am and walked across the Ponte di Grazie and then along the Oltre’Arno area to arrive at the park. Along the way, I passed the Ponte Vecchio and then an area where I had never been. To enter the park, I passed outside of the archway of one of the original Roman ... read more

We left Verona today. Miguel had a very early flight, and I woke up with him at 4:40 am so that he’d be ready for his taxi at 5 am. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to sleep after he left, so after a while I gave up and decided to get outside and take some early morning photos. I walked from the center across one of Verona’s bridges and then walked along the opposite side of the river (Aldo Adgio) to take some photos of the Ponte Pietra and the town. It was a beautiful morning -- cooler and less humid today, with crisp, bright air. It was just lovely. I got back to the hotel for a breakfast with Italietta, Giacomo and Francesca, then waited for Italietta’s taxi to take her to the airport. Giacomo and ... read more
