Up for breakfast at the hotel and a taxi ride to the train station where we caught our train to Naples. We met our driver in Naples as planned. Funny story here...our driver was talking to another driver while holding the sign with our name on it. In true Italian form, the driver was "talking with his hands" so expressively, that we weren't sure if it was our name or not because it was flying all around. A good laugh and introductions then off to the Mercedes Benz van to Pompeii to hook up with Stefano, our guide for the Pompeii archilogical site. As you may know, Mt. Vesuvius (a pyroclastic gas volcano, not lava - the most dangerous type) exploded in AD79 erupting for 3 days and killing the inhabitants of Pompeii. Pompeii was ... read more

This weekend was pretty darn fun. On Friday morning, we left and piled into a bus and drove to Pompeii to take a tour of the ruins. As you know, I was really looking forward to this because I had studied a lot about Pompeii in high school because the Latin courses we take are based on characters who live in Pompeii. Anyways, we decided to take a tour through Naples first, which we were advised was going to be interesting. To quote Rick Steves (a well-known tour guide publisher), "with Sardena an hour away from Naples, I don't know why you'd ever spend the night there, but, if for some reason you have to, here's a list of hotels." Another thing he suggests is to "watch the traffic cops try to enforce traffic laws. ... read more

This morning, we climbed to the top of Mt. Vesuvius, and looked into the crater that was created in 79 AD, when the volcano blew its top and buried the cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum in hot ash and mud. Afterwards, we had a short wine tasting of Lacrima Christi wine made with grapes grown in Vesuvius's volcanic soil. I got a delicious bottle of white wine to take home with me. We stopped at Ristorante Kona on the way back down the volcano and had lunch on the patio with great views of the landscape. I had the ravioli with walnut sauce and it was excellent! We then went to Pompeii and explored the remains of the 2000 year-old ruins. The city was discovered in 1750, and was very well preserved by the ash and ... read more

Leaving from Sorrento by train we traveled for about an hour before arriving at Pompeii. As soon as we left the train we entered the gauntlet of people trying to sell you anything they could. There were people everywhere peddling bottle water, sunglasses, tour books, beach towels, and even guided tours through Pompeii from a "bona fide Ph. D." in archealogy (as was supposedely evident by their name tags which listed their names, Ph. D.). Why would a bona fide doctor of archealogy be whoring himself out to Pompeii tourists at the train station for 50 Euros? Who knows. Anyway, we blew by the makeshift marketplace beside the train platform as quickly as we could, picked up some audio guides and made our way into Pompeii. It wasn't long after we were inside that we realized ... read more

This morning, we checked out of our hotel in Sorrento and made the relatively quick bus ride to the ruins of the ancient city of Pompeii in the shadow of Mount Vesuvius. Our guide for the Pompeii tour was the wife of Mariano, our guide from the previous day! It was amazing to see how well preserved these ruins actually are. Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 A.D., destroying the city, killing tens of thousands of people, and burying the entire thing under ash and rock (but not lava). That is why archeologists were able to uncover the city in such great condition. We saw a courtyard for gladiators, a small amphitheater (which could hold up to 1500 people, since they were much smaller than we are today), and several houses. The streets were difficult to ... read more

My blogs will now be less frequent as I no longer have free internet, but I wanted to share a little bit about my weekend. It took almost all day but we arrived in the beautiful town on Vico Equense. We took many wrong trains but ended up on a camp ground staying in a bungalow. Thats right folks I said camping. We shared our bungalow with many spiders who met their fate. We walked to the square that was beautiful and right on the sea. You could see Capri. It was amazing. We lost most of our group to hotel so just Lisa and I braved the bugalow. We had a great (cheap) dinner and wine. I slept in sweats as not to get eaten. I woke up refreshed, we ate breakfast outside where ... read more

After pottering about in the south, I became concious of time running out on my vacation so I made the decision to put in some miles on the autostrada. Normally, freeways are meant to make time and not very scenic however, that’s not the case with the A3. Cutting through beautiful mountains, the A3 offers visual delights with enough sweeping bends to keep things interesting. As freeways go, you could do a lot worse than the A3. After a day on the autostrada, I had reached the famed Amalfi coast. I had an interest in Amalfi since my father spent time there during World War II. My father fought in the war as a member of the Royal Canadian Artillery that was involved in the forgotten Italian campaign. After being wounded, he was sent to recover ... read more

Hey, Sorry it has been a while since I have written. We have been on the go so much I havent had much time to chill and write. Last I left off we were just leaving Rome. When we woke up in the morning we went straight to the train station headed for Naples. While on the train I started to read about how shady Naples was and how you have to watch your belongings at all time. I started to get a little sketched out. Also my back was really bothering me all day so I was in no mood!! When we finally arrived in Naples we realized that we were actually staying at a hostel like 30 minutes out of this city in a small town called Portichi. We could not for the ... read more

Wow, today was interesting. Long story short, we climbed a volcano (yes, we took it upon ourselves to exercise) and visited Pompei. Mt. Vesuvius was amazing! It was quite a hike. Just as in Athens, it started raining. From the ship the weather seemed to be alright, so there we were standing at the bottom of the volcano in shorts and tank tops shivering. Luckily (as we found in well, ALL of the ports), there was someone nearby waiting to sell us Italia jackets. From Vesuvio we went to the Pompei excavation site. HUGE place. We had an interesting tour guide to say the least. He had a different type of "tour" in mind for us though. He told us to meet him at a certain destination and to turn "left" to meet him and ... read more
