Budapest - Vienna - Rome - Naples (Train) 26-28 August Napoli is our first glimpse of the real, un-touristy Italy, and ever since we’ve arrived I’ve had Dean Martin’s “That’s Amore” running through my head. “In Napoli where love is king, When boy meets girl here's what they say… dee de-de, dee de-de, dee de-de…When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, That’s amore.” It’s the fabled home of pizza, and tasting some of the local fare is high on our agenda (yes, even mine!), it’s also the closest stop to Pompeii, a place I’ve wanted to see since I was a kid after watching “Great Mysteries of the World” on Sunday nights. What we didn’t know is that it’s also the home to the craziest drivers in Italy. As soon as we ... read more

A little late on this one but pompei was sweet, sean and i jumped the fence and rain down into the dungeon and shit in the colosseum it was cool. We walked off the beatin path and ripped threw everything ur not supposed to. It was cool to see how much shit they uncovered and the wear in the old school roads was neat, like from the old wagons and shoit with there rock wheels. We even got to see some bodies that where all like fosilized from the lava, it was pretty wild. For some odd reason there was dogs all over the place baking in the heat, skinny as hell dying it was weird. So as far as im concerned naples sucked other then the really cheap clothes u can buy, whitch was nice ... read more

It was a good thing I got loaded the night before or I wouldn't have had any sleep. Once again I had to sleep naked on top of my sheets because my room was so uncomfotable. My room faced out on a courtyard but thanks to the cheap wine I didn't hear anything. I won't mention breakfast. When it was time to board the bus we again had to lug our bags 1/4 mile to the bus. This time it was downhill and at 8:00 in the morning the sun was beating down on our heads. It was supposed to be another hot one and I wasn't looking forward to being in Pompeii in the mid-day sun. We drove along the coastline again on our way to Pompeii. The view was even more amazing than the ... read more

Night out in Napoli with the guys of Protezione Civile Capriglia. Naples (Napoli in Italian) is the capital city of the Campania region and the Province of Naples. Its metropolitan area is the second most populated in Italy and one of the largest in Europe. It is located halfway between the volcano, Vesuvius and a separate volcanic area, the Campi Flegrei, both of which form part of the Campanian volcanic arc. The city itself in the central area has a population of around 1 million, the inhabitants are known as Neapolitans, napoletani or poetically partenopei. It is rich in historical, artistic and cultural traditions and gastronomy. The Neapolitan language is the geographically most diffuse Italian language, similar variations of the Neapolitan dialect ('o napulitano) are spoken throughout most of Southern Italy. This history, coupled with its ... read more

Sadly we had to leave our piece of paradise and do some serious sightseeing! We left Minori on Sunday early and headed for Pompeii. It was about 1 ½ hours away on our way to Roma. Pompeii is filled with history. Unfortunately we had chosen one of our hottest days to visit but we lasted long enough to get the general idea of the long history there. Mt Vesuvias must have really blown her top when she erupted. 1000m of the top of the volcano was blown out to the surprise of those around it. This is why there are so many people were killed. The shapes of bodies from the eruption were amazing. We have been very spoiled on this trip seeing Aphroditus, Ephesus and here showed us how clever early civilizations were. ... read more

It started in Pellezzano-(Close to Salerno, in Southern Italy): a town on a hill, with a convent, post office, and general store. We had 4-15 year old students. While Nadia (from London) tried to teach the bambini colors in English (when they did not know the difference between orange and pink in Italian) I worked with the way cool adolescents, translating Red Hot Chili Peppers “scar tissue” (not to mention every pop song) and discussing politics, history, family and aspirations. They were a wild, sweet, and charming crew; the most hugs and kisses were received here. The Nuns (oh sweet Antonella) fed us warm cauldrons of creamy pasta. The bells rang every fifteen minutes and prayer hymns were graciously bellowed through piercing speaker phones at 8 in the morning. Every night the garden danced with fireflies ... read more

HI GUYS, THIS IS ALYSON'S MOM. SHE IS IN A LOCATION WITH NO EMAIL FOR THE NEXT WEEK SO SHE CALLED ME AND ASKED ME TO UPDATE ALL OF YOU ON HER TRAVELS. SHE WILL CORRECT ANY MISTAKES I MAKE IN TRANSLATING HER PHONE CALLS, OFTEN THROUGH POOR CONNECTIONS. LET ME FIRST SAY, "I MISS ALYSON". LET ME ALSO SAY, I AM SO THRILLED THAT SHE HAS BEEN GIVEN THIS AWESOME OPPORTUNITY!!! WEDNESDAY LAST WEEK, THE GROUP WENT TO THE VTICAN. IT WAS AMAZING. ALY WAS LOOKING AT SOME ART WORK WHEN SHE GOT SEPARATED FROM HER GROUP. SHE FOUND HERSELF ALONE, MILES AND MILES FROM HER HOTEL, AND OF COURSE SHE DOES NOT SPEAK ITALIAN. JOSH AND DAVE HAD EXPLAINED THE BUS SYSTEM A FEW DAYS BEFORE SO ALL SHE COULD DO WAS TO GET ... read more

We arrived in Bari at 8am after a sleepless night on the ferry. Our cabin was on the lowest deck inside (underneath the car parking facility) and Sam did not handle it very well, as a consequence Tony suffered a sleepless night too. Hmm .... in future we will have an outside cabin, above the water line. During our taxi trip from the Bari ferry terminal to the train station we were introduced to Italian driving - anything goes, you must beep the car horn frequently, driving on the wrong side of the road is fine. There was a train strike and we had to organise the trip to Naples by bus. Italian road signs just have the name of the town, no distances. We drove through kilometres and kilometres of grapes interspersed with olive trees ... read more

Pompeii was a quick visit - definitely worth a look! We arrived and met our local guide to explain the story to us -starting with AD79 when the volcano 'Vesuvius' erupted and buried the whole city (20,000 people) and left behind the ancient ruins of Pompeii. There is actually a movie that will give you a good idea of the various stories he told us (You'll have to do a little research because I forget the title - it's not a recent one). Due to the volcanic rock everything was preserved so well that you could see their paintings (frescoes) on the walls, old cooking pots, the cobbled streets, it even preserved a few bodies the expressions on their faces and all! We had a great time walking around, seeing the oldest architecture that we've seen ... read more

So Pompei! It was quite a ride away from Rome, but definately worth it. It was the last day of my spring break and a lot of walking. My feet were dying Some history: If you didn't know, Pompei suffered serious earthquake in 62 AD, putting most of the city in ruins. In 79 AD, when Mt. Vesuvius erupted, burying the town in ash and rock, repairs to the city still had not been finished. Exploration did not begin unti 1748, finding the city still in ruins. The city is still being excavated today. Check out the few pictures...... read more
