After a relaxing 12 hour ferry ride, our early morning arrival on the mainland ensured we could set about discovering the spent up energy that Naples promises. However, we would quickly learn that without the Pompei draw card Naples would boast little more than being a seaside harbor that serves really good pizza... Highs 1. Walking through the remains of a city that was cast in Volcanic rock in 79 AD, and then rediscovered in the 16th Century. Millions of tourists every year visit this phenomenon, today I was one of them. 2. devouring a famously good pizza (or Calzone - I had no idea what I was ordering) which turned out to be one of the better meals I have ever had. Lows 1. Not that a city should be judged on its ability to ... read more

Ok.... So watching travellers come and go on their adventures to god knows where and being so free was getting to me. Possibly the only downside to a working travel year is the fact that you actually have to work (my job is the best in the world but its still a job), so Dustin and i desided to do something about it. We only get one day off a week so it was sure to be a challenge from the start, as i really wanted to get far enough away as to actually experiance wherever i was going to go. But i had a quick chat to Sid and snap just like that he had organised our shifts and our days off's so that we had exactly 48 hours off. Champ. So the excitment was ... read more

We decided to wake up really early today so we could get going. Sleeping in on vacation is great unless you actually want to get things done. So the alarm went off at 6:15 a.m. Hmmm I think we finally left the hotel at 9:00 a.m. but we were able to fit breakfast in and I was able to update a blog or two. We started towards the train and of course I got us lost for a few minutes. Sorrento is a small town on a hill with lots of winding roads that change quickly and they all look the same, but we eventually got there. Our destination today was Pompei. For those of you not familiar with Pompeii’s history, on the morning of August 24, AD 79, a deadly cloud of volcanic ash from ... read more

First trip out of Rome, done. Second trip, coming at you soon. We started out the trip leaving Rome at about 8:00 in the morning, headed to Pompeii. It took about 3 hours to get there by bus. Pompeii was really cool and it was even better when we got the chance to walk around alone for a while. You really got the since of how it was there in 79 AD when Vesuvius blew. There were a lot of buildings completely intact, some that were ruins, and some that had been restored. Beautiful surroundings of Mount Vesuvius and other hills only heightened the atmosphere. A bunch of students were planning on going out in smaller groups all over southern Italy. Some went to Capri, some went to Sardinia, while Trey, Emily, Erica, and my self ... read more

We left Rome fairly early on friday morning to catch a charter bus with the class directly to Pompei. Upon arrival we immediatly began to take on the composed little k-9 friends that are now ancient Pompei's primary residents. Everywhere we went we continued to gather more and more dogs who seemed satisfied with our company and needed nothing else. I didn't really mind as I didn't find them too distracting, which is great because I really wouldn't want to miss any of that city. The ruins were incredible and amazingly well preserved. It shouldn't have been so suprising as that's what Pompei's known for but even with knowledge of what we were to see it's still astonishing. We ate lunch in Pompei then finished our tour. Although we had the option to return to ... read more

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to All! The Yankee Traveling Road Show is off to Rome, leaving behind a beautiful city that we hope to visit again soon. With its natural sea walls of shear rock jutting up to 100 feet above the ocean, and the colorful stone and stucco homes cascading up the mountain side as they seemingly reach to the sky, it’s really a spectacular place to see. And then, of course, there’re the awesome views of Vesuvius and Capri just in case you should ever tire of the natural beauty of the city itself. The city is small, only about 17,000 people, but it occupies the tip of an entire peninsula, so the impressive scenery virtually surrounds you. We’ll miss the sun drenched days, the gorgeous vistas, the sparkling sea, the pervasive smell ... read more

Napoli and Pompeii December 12, 2005 Hi everyone! The Italians ability to organize things last minute is amazing. I found out I was going to Naples on Thursday night, and on Friday night found out I was leaving at five in the morning. I went with a church group that was going to see the “precipe”(nativity scenes). It was a four hour bus ride from Irsina to Naples, but I spent most of the time talking with Siripan, the other exchange student in my town from Thailand, or reading Zorro in Italian. Before dropping everyone off, the bus driver drove us around some of Naples. From the bus was a great view of Vesuvius, I took a ton of pictures, but the cloudy weather didn’t make for a nice background. We entered a cathedral, called church ... read more
