Runnin
David yelled "Run for it" We decided to wake up really early today so we could get going. Sleeping in on vacation is great unless you actually want to get things done. So the alarm went off at 6:15 a.m. Hmmm I think we finally left the hotel at 9:00 a.m. but we were able to fit breakfast in and I was able to update a blog or two. We started towards the train and of course I got us lost for a few minutes. Sorrento is a small town on a hill with lots of winding roads that change quickly and they all look the same, but we eventually got there.
Our destination today was Pompei. For those of you not familiar with Pompeii’s history, on the morning of August 24, AD 79, a deadly cloud of volcanic ash from the eruption of nearby Mt. Vesuvius overtook Pompei, engulfing the city in black clouds and catching the residents by surprise. Within hours the small city was sealed in a cast of ash. It cost us 10.00 Euros a piece to get into the city which was a pretty good deal. We also purchased an audio guide for 6.50 Euro to help us out a
Listening to some History
We rented this phone looking thing that told us the history of each place we visited. little. Nothing is really labeled so unless you get the free detailed map at the information office you are up a creek without a paddle and left with your imagination. They give you a suggested tour of two hours, four hours or six hours. We did it in 2 ½ hours. We didn’t see everything props to those who did. Everything starts to look the same after you go down a few streets. You really have to have a great imagination or an appreciation for history. The one place I wanted to see, the Lupanare (Small Brothel) was closed for restoration. It’s the most popular place to visit because of the pornographic paintings above each room. They depicted the prostitute’s favorite specialty. I guess that’s where the first kama sutra originated. The prostitutes themselves were slaves, usually Greek or Oriental origin. It is one of the most well preserved houses. When we entered the Sabian Baths they had casts of people. It was a little weird; you can actually see the look on their face frozen, their hands covering their face. They were all about fear of the dogs or as one famous mosaics message was “Beware of the Dog”
Theatre
This was the main theatre which was really ironic since the place was overrun with stray dogs everywhere. I think I counted 50 today. But on the murals that were preserved in a lot of them there was a dog represented. Kinda eerie when you think about the connection.
Like I said 2 ½ hours was enough. We were getting hungry. We grabbed the train that headed back to Sorrento and it soon became overrun with teenagers. I guess school got out, which was weird because it was a Saturday. It took about 30 minutes to get back and then we decided to walk a bit and find some Pizza. Everything shuts down here for lunch. All the shops were closed so it kind of stunk since I wanted to do some shopping. We ended up at this pizzeria in the city square. It was awesome, a huge wood burning oven, hand pressed dough, with the simplest ingredients that were solo yummy. We ordered a bottle of wine and got loopy off of it but hey WHEN IN ROME!!!! Wine has been a beverage of choice for us. Well I had the best intentions of getting us back to the hotel, but I got
Theatre
This was the main theatre us lost once again HE HE. Let’s just say we ended up walking off our lunch and our buzz. Its 8pm now, we ended up taking a long nap and watching the Olympics, after I finish this we are heading down to the piano bar to eat a light dinner. We have another travel day tomorrow as we head up to Florence; we have to check into the hostel by 3pm so we have to have an early start. I am a bit spoiled now with all these executive suites but I am glad we will be around other backpackers. That is the good thing about staying at hostels you are able to meet young people your own age traveling. YES I AM YOUNG I still have a few months before I am 30. I hope you are enjoying our vacation with us …. We are having a great time.
