The directions to the hostel should have been simple. It turned out to basically be on the main square across from the train station. However, the searched for over half an hour because the directions involved a vering, passing streets, and right, and left, and another left. We were helped by a strange toothless old italian man. He (probably having seen this many times) pointed to the correct street for us. All we had heard was that Naples was a dirty city were you are more likely to be pickpocketed than enjoy yourself.... but the odd toothless man helped us, so the place is fine by me. We then hit up the archeological musuem (best part, Pompei mosaic remains.... particularly a special wing called the "secret room" containing pornographic art from the walls of Pompeis citizens... ... read more

Well the mystery tour was frankly a bit spooky! We went to an ancient Roman town called Herculaneum. Back in AD 79 the town was buried by a pyroclastic flow from a volcanic eruption from mount vesuvius. Right up until 1982 archaeologists though that most of the inhabitants had escaped the eruption. Then they found 250 skeletons in some Roman boat houses. This pyroclastic flow souinds like serious stuff! I didn't like the skeletons they gave me the heebie jeebies! I'm sorry but my cameras playing up again so there are no photo's. Right now we're just passing through the Lake Garda region. On our way to the Dolomites. I'm going to leave Doris there and see if I can get some climbing in. I quite fancy a go at the glass mountain, mentioned in the ... read more

Hello all! What a weekend, Hope everyone at home is well, heard its freezing there! Jes and I visited Naples this past weekend, our first weekend excursion! Good news is weekend trips will only get better. Not that we didnt have fun, we certainly did, but Naples wasnt exactly what we had imagined. The weather was less than stellar on friday, cold and rainy all day but we amused ourselves in the Archeological Museum most of the day and found a wonderful restaurant for lunch. (Naples really does have the best pizza!) Saturday was significantly nicer so we got to walk around and really experience the city. Unfortunatly, 'experiencing the city' included beautiful turn-of-the-century architecture completely covered in graffiti, wide open promenades full of dog poo and homeless, and piazza's packed with people of all shapes ... read more

Melania and her friend Anna Maria showed me all of the old-Naples today. I saw lots of churches, gothic and Baroque and also the Vailed Christ and the Caravaggio "The Works of Mercy". Then we also saw the old part of the city that is under the current city. Medival first down, then Roman Empire, then Greek even. Walked along the beach, got gellatto and saw the "Castle of the Egg". I love seeing the castles! Oh, and more great food! Good thing Atkins didn't try to push his diet here! The pastas are delizioso! Oh, and Napolianic pizza for lunch! Where pizza was invented! Napoli!!!... read more

Hate to say it, but it was a gas watching these guys, dozens of 'em, hawking their goods on the street, carrying it all in a big bundle, setting up, then in a moment's notice, scurrying away, when they saw a cop - guess they are 'unofficial', so they're always on the run... is comical to watch, although I did feel sorry for the poor guys. They're only trying to make a living ! ... read more

although you gotta learn to think like a neopolitan (?)... I caught on soon enough, I think. it happened as I was waiting with about 30 other people to cross a street.... the cars were such like a tributary of a river feeding steadily into a larger river. no one dared attempt to cross- so there we all were, sort of paralized, until a man with a pair of rubber boots up to his knees with a pizza box in his hand, nonchanlantly walks out into the street without looking. It was sort of like Jesus walking on the water... then I thinks... hey, this isn't Kern County, and those arn't milking boots.... he's a fisherman !! And yeahh, he knew how to 'go with the flow' in Napoli... read more

...treat your feet to a good soaking. Featured here is my world class award winning bunion. Another good reason to travel while you can- you never know what will hit you when you're in your 50's. I know you're dying to know how I got it. It was a few years ago, sitting peacefully up at my foothill property reading a book. I was sitting in one of those folding chairs that are not easy to get out of, you know, the kind with the drink holders on each side. In my periferal vision I saw enough of a movement that caused me to press the internal eject button- and I LEVETATED out of the chair, balanced on nothing else but the ball of left foot. In a flash i am up looking at a king ... read more

September 23 Today we went into Naples. We said good-bye to our beautiful, movie-star hotel. First we had to climb up to the top to take pictures. It was even more amazing from the top! We started off in Naples at the Napoli Museo Archeologico Nazionale. This was probably one of my favorite museums yet. It was so cool and really well designed. It had some amazing collections, including a temporary exhibit on the riches found in Pompeii. It always amazes me to see things that survive centuries. We got permission to go to the famous “Secret Cabinet” there. Everyone was making fun of me because I had asked Emilio to take us there because I had heard about it, and I really was just curious, not for a pervy reason. But basically the “Secret ... read more

We arrived in Naples late afternoon and went directly to our hostel, Hostel of the Sun. For anyone going to Naples I highly recommend staying here, it is the best hostel I have stayed at. The staff are friendly and helpful and the guests cool, it has a good kitchen, free internet, comfy common room, DVD’s to watch and laundry facilities to wash those clothes which have begun to move up the evolutionary ladder! It is an excellent place to hang out and relax after a day in Pompeii, Naples or the surrounding islands. Our first night there we went out with a few people from the hostel to another seedy square with dodgy looking pubs where Joel, feeling the effects of the alcoholic yeast water he had been ingesting, made a bet with an English ... read more
