We left Madrid yesterday and headed to Naples, Italy. This involved taking the Metro to the airport, a plane to Rome, a train to Naples, then a taxi to the hostel. Needless to say we were very happy to arrive at our hotel. At first sight Naples seemed absolutely crazy and a bit scary. First our cab driver tried to charge us 20 euros for a 5 minute cab ride. We refused and only gave him 10. Second, cars and mopeds don't seem to follow any guidelines or street signs. When you want to cross the road you simply walk into the middle of traffic and hope that the oncoming traffic stops. This is at a marked pedestrian crossing where the cars are supposed to yield. We felt much better when we met the receptionist at ... read more

Well we arrived... ...How to start, well how about, Naples is a dump!!...it's true...we started off with 8 people at the taxi rank all giving their own view on the way to our appartment, which was funny, especially as i left martin to it!!... we're staying at the "hotel neapolis", which is very nice, & is going to be well above the rest of our accomation. Yesterday, out first day, we heading down to the post of molo angioino along with visiting many castle's and sites along the way...we followed this up in traditional style with a few beers back along the way. After a quick shower we headed out for a meal, Martin had a pizza and i orded spag-bol..shame it turned out to be mussels and pasta..which turned out to be very nice. Today, ... read more

Well I went to the airport which is all I was supposed to have to to do get an ticket for today. What they didn't take into acount when telling me this is that United nor Luftunsa have a ticket counter in Naples!!!! The nearest is Rome. Looks like I may be stuck here till the 11th. If so I am just going to hang out on one of the islands. It will blow my budget, but much better than hanging out here in the crazy city.... read more

Hi all, Well yesterday marked the start of my total lack of a plan. I had a flight from London to Frankfurt and I was standing at the Frankfurt airport asking myself “what next”. I did have a flight booked from Naples 11 Aug. to Helsinki Finland, then onto Stuttgart a week later for the wedding. So I had 8 days before my flight out of Naples to spend somehow. I realized I was spending too much time in transit and not enough in one place in the previous week so I booked a train to Naples right from Frankfurt airport. It was 220 euro and about 20 hours getting me there the next morning. There was a change of train in Munich and I got off at the wrong Munich stop!! I am a little ... read more

After a two hour train trip from Rome, we were pleasantly surprised to find a hotel with Air conditioning AND a bathroom. Now don't get me wrong the heat of Rome was the perfect excuse for the gelato and all but the fact that we had air conditioning just made my day. Anyway guess I forgot to mention that we have taken up the European custom of a siesta in the afternoon? Well, this is the best ever with AC. Back to Naples, it was quite a treat after the hustle of Rome to find Naples practically asleep. Since we made it in on a Sunday, we were able to just walk and enjoy the sights. We got some great shots of Mt. Vesuvius and the Castel Nuovo. Needing to get a late lunch we stopped ... read more

I'm really glad I made the snap decision to take an excursion south. The tour is basing out of a campsite in Sorrento (Camping Santa Fortuna). Wisened by my experience in Venice, I opted for the best accomodation option available. The result was a dorm-style cabin with 4 beds in my room, a kitchen, private bathroom and fridge. It overlooks the swimming pool, and is overall quite nice for a campsite. Finally, I checked: there is hot water! The only downside will be mosquitoes, but those are inevitable anyways. I actually consider the place quite a steal (especially at 16 euro a night). We visited Pompeii on the way over. It was interesting, and impressive how well some of the city has been preserved. I was especially impressed to see the quality of Roman roads in ... read more

Alright people, i got to see the ruins of pompeii which was really interesting. There were 4 casts and were pretty eerie because their arms were covering their faces and you could almost feel bad for them. Then we went to the Herculaneum which is further from Mt. Vesuvius so it was much more intacts and had tons of actual artifcats from 2000 years ago...really awesome. I took a bunch of pics so dont worry. Hmm...what else... we got some pizza and more gelato Ischia yesterday was really nice and i needed just a day to relax on the beach and not walking all over and seeing sights. The two girls Im traveling with are leaving tomorrow so I intend to head back up to Rome. 3 other people I met today at Pompeii are heading ... read more

Last night we were at a rather loose end after getting back. After some hemming and hawing, we ventured out for food. One of the things on my list for Firenze was watching the sunset from the Ponte Vecchio. Check. Probably one of the most beautiful sunsets I've ever seen. I think this was one of the Moments, surprisingly few and far between, when I realize, Wow, I'm in Italy. After seeing Florence spread out below my feet like a carpet, after pedalling through land that seems like the original source of sustenance, after pressing an olive branch in my book, after that last dizzying descent into the city, this was the ultimate Moment. After we lost the light, we wandered back, and then wedged ourselves into the pub across the street from the hotel. A ... read more
