So this is where we ended up...Napoli. Let me just say one thing...it's about as dirty as Athens was. At this point I am happy to just be stopping and taking a little rest. We were finally able to do some laundry and just like most of the places, we met some new people that we went to dinner with. It was nice. Basically, I am considering taking my own way around Europe because I canìt stand travelling with Kirst and Manda together....I am going nucking futs!!!! I flipped out on them about 10 times, today alone!! I think I need to take a little vacation from them for a bit. I want to visit the counrtyside or something tomorrow I think, just get away for a bit. We'll see I guess!... read more

The helpx thing turned out to be nearer to Sorrento than Naples, right on the coast at a place called Massa Lubrense which is just further down the Amalfi Coast. It didn't turn out half as well as the last one unfortunately. I don't know if I was just spoilt at the last one... who knows! I Was staying in pretty much a wooden shed - They called them chalets, and I guess the ones for the guests were pretty nice, but the one i had was very basic, very cold and about 5m away from the cockrel pens. 5 of the bastards! When I asked for some bedding as I was cold, I was told that they only have enough for the guests..... but there werent actually any guests! She then said that she'd have ... read more

Italy is the Country, Campania is the region or state, and Naples is the city (Napoli). The dorms back in Barcelona are part of the Universitat Autonamas de Barcelona and they are also part of the hotel Serhs. the Sehrs rents out rooms for 20€ a night for travelers and so we meet a lot of people. To name a few, Austrailians, Irish, lots of Canadians, New Yorkers, Danish (Kickass language), and french. Not to mention the Catalunyan people everywhere that consider themselves different from Spanish. They have their own language ... read more

well in case all of you are wondering about us we are all safe and sound in the most dangerious city in italy, we have heard some pretty bad stories about this town and that is what drawed us to here like people getting mugged, stabed and raped. all the thing we came here to see. and also we are only one tram stop away from the biggest active volcano in europe, and today we are headed towards pompeii just to check out the distructive power of the volcano which wiped out the town in the middle of the night quite a few years ago. but all the thing we have read about says that it will erupt about every 30 years and it hasn't erupted in over 60 so it due for a big one. ... read more

Today we docked in Naples and set out to explore. We had been told by many experienced cruisers as well as our waiter at dinner not to buy excursions from the ship, but to go ashore and then figure things out, as there will inevitably dozens of local cab drivers and tour companies just waiting for our arrival for us to choose from. It is true that the excursions offered by the cruise company are exceedingly expensive and there are many people waiting for your business on shore. The part about us being able to choose didn’t exactly work out that way, though. As Salomone Salvatore, our cab driver, said later in the day, “I saw you like 4 lambs, not knowing where you were going, and I said to myself, they are the ones. ... read more

Hey folks. We had another kick ass day in Italy, this time in Naples, which was originally inhabited by the Greeks. Nea Poli means new city in Greek, and this turned into Napoli. Interesting, huh? We docked in Naples, and took a boat over to Capri (pronounced CApri), which was one of the most beautiful places I have ever seen. Probably why to rent a house there costs $10,000 a night, eh? We took a hair-raising bus ride up to the top of the town, and took the "Funiculare" (a cable car; funiculi funicula!) back down to the bottom when we were done. It was pretty cool. We took a nice walk around there and took the boat to lovely Sorrento, the home of my new favorite liqueur, Limoncello. It was a quaint, picturesque little town. ... read more

Today we did a walk through Naples with a local guide. We saw the Galleria Umberto I, built in the late 1800s as part of an urban renewal project. The marble floor contains mosaics of each of the zodiac signs, it's a very impressive building. We walked over to the Palazzo Reale (Royal Palace), construction began on this in 1600 and it was finished in 1843. It was so beautiful on the inside, everything was gilded and marbled, and it had the most amazingly intricate tapestries. Then we went on to the the Museo Archiologico Nazionale (National Archeological Museum) to see the ancient artifacts that were unearthed at Pompeii, a Roman town that was buried in ash by a volcanic eruption in 79 AD. There are still some things remaining at Pompeii, which we would see ... read more

I flew from Colorado Springs to Denver to Munich to Naples on United, Lufthansa, and Air Dolomiti. I had checked in online the day before through United's website, but they only gave me boarding passes and checked my luggage through Munich. I didn't know they could check it all the way to Naples, but apparently if you check in at the ticket counter they can. Note to self. I had to collect my luggage in Munich and then go to the ticket counter and get a boarding pass and re-check it. Customs going both ways is very anti-climactic. Everyone talks about "clearing" customs, but all that entails is saying "I don't have anything to declare" and you don't really have to tell anyone that, you just walk through the green door instead of the red one. ... read more

So Im not such a fan of Naples. Its crowded and busy and the traffic is ridiculous. Most people dont speak English and they just look at me like Im stupid when I try to speak Italian. I know I obviously dont speak great Italian, but Im trying. Give me some credit. Yesterday I hated Naples. Today I still dont like it, but Ive adjusted and its okay now. So after seeing the Pope... I saw the anti-Bush riots. They were peaceful, but I was still kind of afraid and spent a lot of that day in my room. It was my last day there, but I had kind of run out of things to do anyways. So I came to Naples the next day. And hated it so much. I couldnt find the hotel I ... read more

Today, which is my 21st birthday, is around the halfway (one month) point of our trip, which means everything starts getting a little more real. I'm made to realize again how unreasonable, arrogant, and even cruel I can be at times - not so grown up after all. We've survived our first fight - Rome was not a relaxing place to be. Because of my hopeless romanticism, I fully expected it to be my favorite city of all. I did love seeing the ancient sights: the catacombs, the Sistine Chapel, St. Peter's, the Colosseum, etc. The history was as thick as our ridiculously expensive little jar of peanut butter, and was even more exciting to the senses. But the first tendrils of homesickness started to creep into my heart in Rome. I thought I was surviving ... read more
