Curses! Foiled again by public transportation! This morning, we set no alarm, but were still up at 7:30. We had to pack our suitcases with some more souvineers, so it took a bit longer than usual. Still, we were ready by 9:30. After dragging our bags to the top of the stairs, we learned that we had just missed a bus and it would be 45 minutes until the next one. But we used the time to enjoy the view and read more in our guidebooks. After we finally got down the hill, we had to wait another 30 minutes for the Circumvesuviana, which itself took over an hour to reach Naples. Finally, we checked into our hotel at 1:30. It was difficult to find, as their directions given online were extremely vague. They also gave ... read more

So Naples, what can I say about Naples, well it is true, what people say, it is dirty, full of graffiti and you really have to keep on your purse/wallet! I actually don’t have a lot to say on Naples, because the city itself did nothing for me! I made the choice (the right one too) to stay out of the city centre. Thanks to a couple of fellow travellers I was soon able to decipher the mass of numbers that made up the train timetable and was soon on my way, following the instructions of the tourist info guy to get to my hostel! WELL……….about an hour and a half later after 3 phone calls to the hostel, having to ask 5 people for directions and hoping the drops of rain falling didn’t turn ... read more

No bus to Vesuvius This is not a regular travelblog of mine, but I was reminded of our experience of Italian taxi-drivers when I read Shaheema Shaw's blog "Madam, Only Rs.40 to Nowhere" about a Chennai auto-driver. This was way back in the summer of1989 when we had taken a Eurail tour. We had planned to visit Vesuvius that day and had arrived at the Ercolano Scavi station from Naples. It was about 2:15 PM and I had read from Fodor's that there are regular buses to the top of Vesuvius every 2 hours. (No widespread Internet usage in India in those days.) We wanted to take the 2:30 PM bus. Ercolano was a sleepy little station in those days. There were only three taxis outside the station. As soon as we stepped out of the ... read more

Well, I hate to say it, but I have found a place I hate. And it happens to be in a country I love. Naples is crap! Seriously, they should warn you about this and say No. Just Don't Go There. But they don't and here we are. Naples is terrible, but first, a little bit about our last few days in London... After a couple of days of pure recovery from the Contiki we set about being tourists again and went to the Tower of London. It is expensive, £16 to be exact, but totally worth it. The Tower of London was built by William *is that his name?* the Conqueror who decided that he would build himself a defence fort right up against the eastern wall of London, which was established by the ... read more

Saturday: I got up at 5:30 to get ready for my trip to Pompeii. Matt and Tommy ended up going with me on the group trip, getting to go for free since several people didnt show who had already paid for a spot. We played cards and slept most of the way there--the scenery on the drive was beautiful, many more mountains than our area! When we arrived in Pompeii we took a guided tour of the city, which was really neat but somewhat abbreviated because of the rain that started about the same time we arrived. We got to see the house of Romulus and Remus and a ton of really neat artificats while in the city as well as touring all throughout. After the tour we went to a nearby resturant where they had ... read more

Napoli. Where do I start? And this time I do not mean that in a good way. Let me preface this by saying that we were not planning on spending much time in Naples when we decided to book our hostel there, but it was convenient to get in and out of, and provided an easy access to a number of different day trips in that area. The main reason both Celeste and I wanted to go to southern Italy was to go to Capri island (the ferry leaves from Naples), so when we arrived in Naples and found it to be incredibly cold and pouring rain, things weren’t looking up for our trip to Capri. After we arrived in Naples, we took the metro to the closest stop to our hostel and followed the ... read more
