Everyone raves about the island of Capri, on the coast line near Naples, like its the most blessed place on earth. I thought, ok, must be cool. So we checked it out on a sunny morning via ferry from Amalfi. Scenically, yes, its lovely. But then again, its nothing more spectacular than the coastline of the mainland. The big difference is, of course, that its an island, and islands draw a number of people including: tourists looking for day trip places that will sound exotic on postcards they send home to relatives sitting behind office desks; rich people who need outlets to spend exhorbitant amounts of dirty money and a preferably small place where they can find like-funded brand wearers; and famous people who, well, I don't know any famous people. Capri is their place. Its ... read more

I teamed up with to people from my hostel, Sarah and Jeff, and we went to the Isle of Capri. We took a boat to Capri (pronounced with the 'a' as a schwa... KA-pre) Upon getting off the boat, I knew this was going to be good. The view of the water blended with the island was beautiful. We took a long walk up, and up, and up that took us from Marina Grande to Capri Town. It was a little touristy, small, and a little more cramped walkways than Sorrento. Very skinny roads and pathways through the medieval town. My guidebook mentioned seeing Villa Jovis, ruins from Emperor Tiberio dating back to about 50 B.C., with a good view. Ok, let's go! We stopped at a small local supermarket on the way and had their ... read more

So Last night I left Florence with Maxann to go on a bus2alps trip to Capri, Sorrento, and Pompeii. The bus ride was about six hours but it was broken up pretty well since we watched the movie, Love Actually, and made two rest stops as well as a quick stop in Rome to get some other students who were also going on our trip. When we finally made it to our hostel in Sorrento, I was so tired, I passed right out. In the morning, I got up, took note of how nice the hostel actually was, and got some breakfast downstairs. It was pretty lucky that I was able to get this amazing deal for the trip. Granted food and tours were not included in the price, but the cost of getting to and ... read more

Our first full day in Sorrento was Friday, and what better day to head off to the Isle of Capri. The weather was a bit gloomy, and rain had been forecast for later, so we jumped the local bus to Sorrento early and made our way down to the port. There are ticket booths everywhere, so we just rocked up to one and asked for two ferry tickets to Capri. Ferry rater than hydrofoil as the guide books said the hydros were impersonal, and the ferries a little more romantic. Leaving dock 3 in 20 minutes. Cool. The boat that berthd at dock 5 was pretty big, so we figured that that wasn't ours, and we stood around watching the small ocean liner docking at dock 2. Geting close to our leaving time, and most of ... read more

Well, we returned from a rather interesting trip to Capri. To be honest, we weren't really looking forward to another group trip but it was going to be Capri....how bad could it be. To start off, we boarded a boat for the 30 minute ride to the island. The water was very very rough. There were many people on board who were throwing up and anyone who knows me, knows that I don't do well on boats and this was no exception. I was actually feeling okay for the ride until we got to Capri and I had to stand up. I turned completely white and began sweating like nuts. I held it together though and didn't puke. But oh my god I was close. We get to the island - which Ryan and I had ... read more

We have had a great time when our friends Mandy and Duncan came to join us for the Italian Adventure a three day add-on adventure of Pompeii, Sorrento, Amalfi Coast and Capri. I was so glad to arrive in Pompeii, a place I had dreamed of visiting since I was young. Two hours was probably never going to be enough time to explore the whole ancient city, but I didnt mind. Sleeping behind the ruins of Pompeii was the giant Mt Vesuvious the huge volcano that caused Pompeii to become one of the most famous archaelogical sights. The city of Pompeii was covered and preserved by the volcanic dust from the volcano erruption 2000 years ago. It was amazing to see that many buildings and mosaics were not destoyed and we could walk around visiting places ... read more

A guest entry by Neil: While James was lounging about in Positano for a couple more days, Amy and I took the short trip to the island of Capri where we were greeted by sharp cliffs, lush greenery, and light blue water. The island is composed of two villages. These would be Capri and Anacapri. Anacapri (where we stayed) is farther into the island, and although this sounds like a bad thing, it is MUCH less touristy. It was already evening when we were finally settled into our hotel, so Amy and I grabbed a picnic dinner and headed out to a spot that was recommended by our hotel manager . All in all, it was very fun. Our picnic experience consisted of a lighthouse, lots of cliffs, an endless ocean, a swim, sandwiches, wine in ... read more

After squeezing Herculanuem and Pompei into one day, we took advantage of the amazingly glorious weather (after 8 months in London, we appreciate hot sunny days with a newfound zeal) and the close proximity to Sorrento - by jumping on a ferry to the island of Capri. Laying claim to being the playground the rich and famous, Capri does have its share of celebrities (Sophia Lauren and Georgio Armani both have houses there, and one restaurant had 10+ photos of Mariah Carey visiting - funnily enough they were all photos of the same night) however it does have a sense of being very laid back and chilled out. Tourists clamour all over the island in tiny orange buses, which do an amazing job of squeezing down the tiny allies that serve as both footpath and road. ... read more

I left Sorrento at 10 a.m. on Thursday and took a 30 min. ferry to the Island of Capri, as you'll see from the pictures the island is stunning. When I arrived at Capri's Marina Grande, my original plan was to immediately catch another boat to the Blue Grotto, but the Grotto was closed, so I took a 30 min. bus ride up through the town of Capri to Anacapri, which it the town that sits at the top of the Island. Anacapri is a very, very small town with mostly shops and restaurants. I wondered around for a bit and found a few neat places like the Casa di Rossa (the red house), and the Chapel of Villa San Michele. The Casa di Rossa was closed, but I was able to go into the chapel. ... read more

Buon giorno Italia! We woke up bright and early this morning to see the sun rise over the Italian countryside from our balcony. It was quite spectacular! It was also surprisingly COLD! And, uh, remind me next time to put on a jacket when shooting a sunrise, at sea, in October. Our course brought us by the emerald isle of Ischia at about 9:45 in the morning. We don’t know much about this island, but it sure is beautiful! Check out the pics! We braved the very strong winds and not so warm temps out on the front of the ship to catch some pretty nice shots of the island. We docked in Naples at about noon and we were some of the first off the ship. When you only have 6 hours on the shore, ... read more
