So Last night I left Florence with Maxann to go on a bus2alps trip to Capri, Sorrento, and Pompeii. The bus ride was about six hours but it was broken up pretty well since we watched the movie, Love Actually, and made two rest stops as well as a quick stop in Rome to get some other students who were also going on our trip. When we finally made it to our hostel in Sorrento, I was so tired, I passed right out.
In the morning, I got up, took note of how nice the hostel actually was, and got some breakfast downstairs. It was pretty lucky that I was able to get this amazing deal for the trip. Granted food and tours were not included in the price, but the cost of getting to and from as well as the stay at the hostel was €.110! I was one of the first 5 people to sign up for it so I was able to get it for half price. Sometimes it pays to act quickly.
Today was spent at Capri and it was really nice here. I liked Cinque Terre better, but I think that's only because it
The coast
I took a few pictures while waiting for the ferry to Capri in the morning was the first time that I ever saw all the houses in colors like they were in and all on the coast, etc. However, the color of the water was amazing. It was such a brilliant blue, just like in the post cards. I took a ferry from Sorrento to Capri and once I got there, took a boat tour around the Island. Unfortunately, the Blue Grotto was inaccessible since it was high tide and the water was on the rocky side. The tour boat did take us to the Green Grotto though and I got some pictures of that.
After the boat tour, we went up the mountain to Anacapri, which is the main area of the Island and then took a little shuttle bus even further up. When we got there, Maxann and I B-lined it to this place that makes sandles fitted to your foot. So we were really excited! I got to pick out the style and the color of the sandle and then got to watch this little old Italian man make then. He cut holes in the leather, nailed a few nails in and strung the leather and voila! It came out great!
In the mean time, while he was doing that though... on the other side of the shop they were making lemoncello. Now lemoncello is supposedly amazing from Italy and even more so from this area. They were right! It was incredible. The man that was serving us free samples of it was also awesome. He let us try the original flavor and then a cream one. Then he gave us chocolates and some of his coffee. That all definitely hit the spot.
Afterwards, we went to get lunch and shared a pizza called Diavola. That too was really good. The pizza was so fresh and just perfect. I think it had salami and it definitely had a little chili on it, of course sauce and cheese. Mmmm... my mouth is watering just thinking about it.
Upon finishing our pizza, we walked around for awhile. I saw an old castle that they converted into an art gallery. It wasn't exactly what you think of when you hear the word "castle," but that's what it said. Then we decided to go on this sky lift. That was definitely a good investment. We took, what appeared to be, a ski lift,
to the very top of the island. The view was so-so. If I had to complain about something, I would say that I looked at a lot of rooftops without seeing anything all that impressive. However, what was really cool was everything that was directly beneath me. There were some wineries and these weird little shrines. To what? I have no idea. I also saw a few cats and that made me think of Marjorie (my Binghamton roommate). At the very top of the lift, there was a clearing and they put up a bunch of chairs and tables and a restaurant. Maxann and I ended up taking a nap there for an hour in the sun. That was so refreshing and well needed. Then we came back down, and met everyone at the meeting spot, came back to Sorrento, and took the 40 minute walk to our hostel, called Seven Hostel.
At the end of the night, we showered, got dinner at the hostel and that turned out okay. It was pretty cheap, to say the least. Lastly, we polished off a bottle of Sicilian wine that had a bad ass snake on the bottle.
