Buongiorno, Sorry it has taken me a couple of days to write my blog on Pompeii, Capri, and Napoli, but I was so tired from the weekend I needed to rest! On Friday morning a double decker bus picked all 71 of us up at 7:00 a.m. and we drove straight to Pompeii. Well.. actually we did stop at a rest stop. Now these rest stops do not have bathrooms like we are used to, they have toilettes that have no seat and no toilette paper (I luckily brought some Kleenex in my purse). So pretty much the bathroom was my worst nightmare come true, but I did go pee and wet napped my entire body clean after. Finally we arrived in Pompeii, volcano Mount Vesuvius still lingers in the background, now dormant, but not extinct. ... read more

Today we went to the Isle of Capri (apparently pronounced KAH-pree, not kah-PREE...) The ferry ride on the way over was pretty bad... the ferry was packed and completely enclosed with no air, and it was so hot. I was feeling pretty sick by the time we arrived, and the fumes from all the buses and boats at the marina did not help. Capri was literally over-run with people, you couldn't even walk down the street without running into someone. It's the playground of the rich and famous, with all of the Gucci, Prada, insert something else Paris Hilton wears here shops, and I had no interest in any of that whatsoever. Though I did feel like a movie star when I ordered a glass of lemonade then got my bill for 6.50 euros (the equivalent ... read more

We had to be up bright and early to pack up the bus and leave Rome. We took a nice drive (about 3 hours) down to Naples (or Napoli, to the Italians). We really only saw the city as we drove through to the port, since it was not our main destination. At the port, we boarded a hydrofoil boat and went approximately 45 minutes across the water to the tiny island of Capri. In Capri, we took a small caravan of taxis up the narrow and winding roads to the top of the mountain. This ride was somewhat scary, since it didn't really seem that the roads were wide enough for 2-way traffic! Let's just say that it was a fun - albeit occasionally tense - ride! At the top of the mountain, we ... read more

These computers are terrible. I just wrote something and then clicked on menu to get another site open and it closed all the windows, so now I must start over. On Saturday we docked in Naples, Italy. Mom, sisters, Matt and I decided to take a hydrofoil over to the Island of Capri. Dad stayed and explored Naples. The boat ride was about 40 minutes and luckily none of us got sick because it was pretty darn rocky at times. Once on the island we took a cab up to the city center area. Capri is a playground for the rich and famous. It was very crowded with tourists, but we didn't see anyone famous. There is basically any designer store you can imagine. We looked around a few of them but didn't buy anything ... read more

Today we spent most of our time on Capri. Last night, Greg spent an hour trying to figure out how to see Capri in the morning and Paestum in the afternoon. It would have worked, but the public transportation didn't run as advertized. First, the bus from our hotel into Sorrento took at least half an hour, and it was jam packed with mostly locals who got off at many various stops. We got off at the train station, where we planned to catch a bus down to the ferry port. I had planned to get off at the main square, Piazza Tasso, and do the same, but there was another couple from our hotel headed out to Capri, too, and they seemed to know what they were doing. Whether they were right or wrong, we ... read more

What do you mean we look like sisters? Europe » Italy » Capri By michellemanireMay 9th 2007michelle manire Our 3rd day in Capri was a free day for us. NO TOURS! Hmmm....what to do...how 'bout shopping (again)?! Yes, we've done a "full investigation" as Michelle would say, of all the shoe shops in Capri. It was reeeeallly fun. Afterwards, we decided to enjoy the pool looking over the Meditteranean, get a little exercise, and chill out. That evening, we went to Mariah Carey's favorite restaurant (their claim to fame) on the island -- Villa Verde. This restaurant can't be beat in regards to food, service, and Franco the owner. One of the many things that m... read more

Little bit of history on this tiny island. This was once the home of Roman Emporer Tiberius. The monastery next to our hotel was founded in 1371 -- the site where Tiberius once ruled Rome. The monastery is now a private school. We were told by our tour guide today that when Tiberius would get sick of any of his many wives, he would quite simply throw them off the cliff. At least those gals had a nice view going down. (sick, I know...but it's late) We took some gorgeous pictures today of one of the most beautiful places we've ever seen. Our tour guide, Fabio took us to Anacapri, the island's other town at the top. We sat poolside and enjoyed the view a little more after of course, more shopping, gelato, and cappucinos. ... read more

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles...and Gondolas, and Tour Buses, and taxis, and Mini-vans, and speed boats, and mopeds.... Europe » Italy » Capri By michellemanireMay 7th 2007michelle manire We spent today traveling A LOT. We took a car back to Florence from Siena where we caught a train to Naples. A very nice guy (we'll call him Antonio) heard rumor of our luggage via his pal Carlo and picked us up from the train station in Naples in a TOUR BUS. Hilarious. We then took a boat to The Isle of Capri. The Captain of the boat showed us the ropes and let us take over for a while. Pretty killer views of the Mediterranean from all vantage points. Once we got to Capri,... read more

The DARN TOUR BUS that picked us up in Naples.
Once I told him he was "bello" and handed him a handful of Euros, he was ok.
