Forgot to put in why I mentioned pants in the Capri title. Someone - I won't name names but it involved two X chromosomes - insisted we try a shortcut back up to our hotel despite my assurance that it would be all steps. It was. There were lot of pants, stops, near heart attacks before we reached the top. Lon the plus side, it was shorter, although not quicker.... read more

After a week off getting up "whenever", today started with the unfortunate necessity of arising early in order to get coffee and a light breakfast prior to catching the ferry to Capri. From Positano the ferry ride is about one hour. Seas were fairly calm today. Capri has seen human habitation since the Stone Age, but became a Roman resort and refuge during the Republic and Empire. Augustus had a large villa there, and in 27 CE Tiberius established himself there and ruled from Capri until he died about ten years later. The Villa Jovis established by Augustus is still a popular tourist destination. The two towns on the island are Capri city surrounding and slightly above the harbor, and Anacapri, high above the sea. But the bucket list item is the Blue Grotto (Grotto Azzura). ... read more

Geo: 40.5509, 14.2429Well, it's our last full day in Italy. We were awakened this morning by the sound of a crowing rooster and the mooing of cows. We checked out our doorwall and there were also sheep grazing and cherries being picked in the fields next door. Our morning began with a good breakfast at the Hotel Bussola. They served lunchmeats, cheeses, spreads, juices, coffee and hot tea. The best part were the cakes and rolls which were fresh baked and still warm. We were then driven by car to the city center where we could catch a bus to Capri. We had spent yesterday in Anacapri. The bus carried us down the mountain road ,which we arrived in Capri, learned it was named "Mama Mia Road." There's a reason for that title. It was just ... read more

Geo: 40.5509, 14.2429We are back on the move today. We caught a ferry boat early this morning to the Isle of Capri. It was just a 45 minute ride from Sorrento. The ride was very relaxing. We arrived in Marina Grande but this time on the island. Remember , Sorrento also had a Marina Grande. The marina was a busy spot since it's for commercial and tourist use. Right next to the port there was a beach where many people were already swimming at 8:30 a.m. There were many people snorkeling too. The beach had a small sandy area but many people were just swimming around the rocks not near the beach. The water was very clear. We caught a bus to AnaCapri where our hotel is located. The bus just kept winding up this narrow road ... read more

Yesterday we took a boat ride to Capri, an island off the coast from Sorrento. The water was the bluest and clearest I have ever seen it. London and I went into the famous Blue Grotto where the sun reflects off the limestone seabed making the interior of the grotto a magnificent blue. It seems that rail strikes are a pretty common occurrence over here and tomorrow they have scheduled a strike. Luckily we were headed to Rome today and not tomorrow. we catch a plane back to reality tomorrow morning. Brian... read more

Geo: 40.5509, 14.2429Off to Capri. The bus picked us up from the hotel for an interesting ride along the twisty roads to the harbor at Marina del Cantone. At the dock a fisherman had come in with the morning catch. The trip across to the Isle of Capri took about 30 minutes followed by a tour around the island. We passed the main town of Capri and went past the famous Blue Grotto. Rounding the end of the island we saw the lighthouse and the captain managed to get the boat onto the entrance to the Green Grotto. We landed at Marina Piccola which is on the opposite side of the island from the town of Capri. A bus took us over the middle of the island to Capri. We were given a tour and then ... read more

Started the morning off with the regular bread and jam around 9 and headed towards CAPRI. I had to take a train to Sorrento and then a boat to the Island. It was a beautiful island and I had no idea where to start and how to get around. The tourist information lady was not helpful at all. I just followed the crowd to some boat slips and bought a boat ticket that went around the island. It took about hour and half to go around the island with a stop at the Blue Grotto in the middle...... This was awesome because when you get to the Blue Grotto, there are little row boats that come up to the boat and three people get in each one. You then get rowed over to this low entrance ... read more

Today we were the commanders of our own ship, small though it may have been, we were free! For a whole two hours! We hired a small speed racer, bought some beers and a half bottle of wine (but forgot that we needed a cork screw for the wine, so poor John had to give over one of his beers to his dear mrs. Earlier in the day we decided to visit the Grotto Azzurra (Blue Grotto) by way of 3 connecting buses, so that we didn't waste too much of our time on the boat waiting for our turn to go into the cave. You have to wait to be transferred from the jetty, or a bigger boat (if you have come by sea) into the little timber boats, and squeezed in on top of ... read more

We finally made it to Capri, an island off the Amalfi Coast which we had been looking forward to returning to for many years. Tomorrow we will hire a small boat and explore the island from the water, and it's many caves (grotto's) - blue, white and green, named for the colour of the water (blue & green) or the rock (white one). I think the green or white grotto we can swim into, but the blue grotto has a tiny cave entry and every has to anchor and climb into small boats with experienced guides. They time the entry with the tide/swell receding and everyone lays back on top of each other in order to get through the small gap. Of course you have to tip extra if you want them to sing while in ... read more
