I teamed up with to people from my hostel, Sarah and Jeff, and we went to the Isle of Capri. We took a boat to Capri (pronounced with the 'a' as a schwa... KA-pre) Upon getting off the boat, I knew this was going to be good. The view of the water blended with the island was beautiful. We took a long walk up, and up, and up that took us from Marina Grande to Capri Town. It was a little touristy, small, and a little more cramped walkways than Sorrento. Very skinny roads and pathways through the medieval town. My guidebook mentioned seeing Villa Jovis, ruins from Emperor Tiberio dating back to about 50 B.C., with a good view. Ok, let's go! We stopped at a small local supermarket on the way and had their deli make us prosciutto panini with some wonderful mixture of lemon, orange, and lime juice. We sit on a bench to rest, and enjoyed the wonderful view of the sea from Capri. I didn't know what to expect, after walking through the beautiful houses, trees blooming with beautiful purple flowers, and orange and lemon fruit trees, we were greeted with a view that took my
breath away. We were on top of a 1000 foot cliff overlooking the water and the entire Sorrento peninsula! The cliff was straight down, the water was so blue, and you could see for miles! We could see birds flocking BELOW us! We continued through the ruins to come upon the personal villa of Emporor Tiberio. OMG! I have never seen so much from standing on land as I did then! I could see the northern coastline of Italy, down to Mount Vesuvius, the Sorrento coast, the Amalfi coast, and more of the southern coastline of Italy. I have never seen so much water at one time without being in an airplane. We were approximately 1100 ft high on the edge of a cliff, with the view of a lifetime. We finally left Villa Jovis and walked back down to Capri Town. It was too late to go to the Blue Grotto, so the guidebook recommended another sight that was a 'garden with the best view in Capri.' We thought we had already seen the best view in Capri, but why not? We headed for Giardini d Augusto. We took the funicular up the hill this time to save our
feet, and headed directly there. There was a very nice garden, but, oh my, the view! Looking south-ish, again from about 1000 ft, there were these two picturesque rock 'towers' poking out of the water. I have seen these in pictures and videos before, but oh my, they don't do it justice! The sun started peeking out of the clouds for some wonderful pictures. To my left was Capri Town, on the edge of the water were the two rock towers with an arch in at least one of them, another wonderful view of the water, and a huge rock face cliff on the far right of our vista point. This... is when I called this place Heaven... I hope the pictures and videos I took paint the same picture as being there.
