Negotiated a bus from Heathrow to Gatwick for my flight to Dublin. I wasn't scheduled to leave until 9pm-ish and I arrived at Gatwick at around 3pm. I inquired at the service desk whether it might be possible to be put on standby and catch an earlier flight. The reply was "Sorry, Ryanair don't do Stand-by, however, if you wanted to book a separate ticket for an earlier flight it will cost you ............................121 Pounds" "Ahh thanks, but no thanks" was my reply. Ryanair also have a policy of charging 5.5quid for every kilo that your luggage is over 15kg. Now I knew that my backpack was at least over 20kg so I put my brain to work to alleviate the problem. Solution = Chuck the heavy non-essential stuff like washing powder etc and wear as ... read more

Yes please! Ok, so we headed over to Kilkenny after Dublin and rode on our first train, which was amazing. I am now in love with train rides; they are comfy and you have a table to play cards on! So Kilkenny is a really Irish town that it is very small with a bad ass castle. We did a tour of this castle (after taking a tour of the castle grounds, which we both took the opportunity to pee on our first castle!) and during this tour we came upon a huge marble table. Whilst Dillon was sitting upon this table the guide goes on to tell the group that it was used to lay the dead bodies on during the wake. So he was embarassed and stood up quickly, then proceeded to exclaim, ''Shit!'', ... read more

With Jessica's school requirements completed, today was the day for the Ring of Kerry. We needed to start out early because we had a long trip ahead of us. We picked Jessica up at about 8:30am (yes, she was actually up and ready). As with any trip with Jessica, we had to make a side trip. She had just finished writing a paper on the Rock of Cashel in Tipperary (it is a long way to Tipperary). Buildings on this rocky stronghold date back to the 12th century, and Cormac's Chapel is one of the most outstanding examples of Romanesque architecture in the country. The Hertiage Society offers guided tours of this important piece of history, but we were treated to a personal tour with an extremely beautiful and knowledgable guide, but we are a little ... read more

Ireland - Killarney to Doolin Saturday 22nd - Sunday 23rd March (Easter Sunday) Woke feeling very refreshed after a great night out at Dannys Irish Music Pub, which is right across the road from Neptunes. The pub is really typical Irish and the food was delicious, the service excellent and the atmosphere cosy. We took our time over dinner and sat and talked and laughed and it was one of the best nights we’ve had so far, just being together and having fun. We went walking around town after dinner then off to bed. Saturday morning now, and on todays agenda is Muckross House which is about 6km from the Killarney town centre. We had to move rooms though (because I’d booked extra days pretty late) which was a bit of a bitch, from our double ... read more

Ireland - Killarney Tuesday 18th March - Friday 21st March (Good Friday) Well, Killarney won our hearts about 10 minutes after we arrived. We had booked to stay here for 2 days, but within an hour I had cancelled our next stop and booked 5 days here. Killarney is wonderful, I absolutely love it. It’s now Easter, at 9pm Good Friday night, and I’m sitting in bed with Reagan fast asleep beside me while I update my diary. We are staying at Neptune’s Hostel which is right in the centre of town - definitely stay here (if you are ok with basic hostel accommodation) as its great. There are so many people staying here, from Canadians to Spaniards, Germans to Chinese. Everyone chats and sits around the communal areas - huge kitchen, lounge room with cable ... read more

Singapore to Ireland Fri 14 - Sat 15th March 2008 It’s 10am Saturday morning, 15th March. I am starting today’s diary on the train from Dublin to Kilkenny. It’s been a long journey getting here. We spent our last day in Singapore at the zoo then headed out to Changi airport later that day, around 21 hours ago. We flew from Singapore into Heathrow London , changed planes to Dublin then headed to Dublin Heuston station to catch the train down to Kilkenny. We have about an hour and a half on the train now to get down to Kilkenny. Pretty exhausted, especially Reagan, as she didn’t sleep well on the plane last night and was a little airsick when we arrived Heathrow. Still, she has come through like a little trouper and perked up nicely ... read more

31/12 We woke up this morning to a “fry up” (bacon, egg, sausage, beans and tomato) which was well needed after a night on the Ireland town. What started out being a warm up night for new years with a couple of drinks turned out to be 5 or 6……..pints plus a couple of shots. We met up with another couple who were also staying in Killarney but happened to be Americans. A lovely couple who were teaches (English and maths and grade 3). The pub had a band that were playing some traditional Irish music with traditional instruments until 2300 then a live rock bad started to play, At 1200 Rhiannon dragged me home for the early start today. The bus picked us up at 1000 and we started off to the Ring of Kerry. ... read more

29/12 Picked up a Polo Astra hire care and drove to Waterford today from Dublin, it rained the whole way. Troy is a very good driver it’s fortunate they too drive on the left side of the road but being a European car the indicators are on the opposite side!!! Stayed in a lovely B&B just outside of Waterford run by a lady named Susan, she can talk a million miles an hour but she does a mean scrambled egg on toast. Waterford is home to the Waterford Crystal Factory (news to me to) they make very expensive crystal there, including all sorts of sports trophesy especially ones in golf and tennis, there were replicas of trophesy given to Tiger Woods and Andre Agassi. Couldn’t afford to buy anything but it was very nice to look ... read more

Haha yeah, so on the way from Galway to Killarney we decided to go see the Cliffs of Moher. Just about 10 minutes before we got there mom hit a "mobile bank" truck with our rental car. Keep in mind the truck was stationary, we hit it going about 2 miles per hour. No one was hurt but the truck acted as a can opener on our poor rental car's door. The guys were very nice about it but they had to call the "Guard" or police to take a report. Mom and I couldn't stop laughing because he was so serious about his job, but when he pulled out his pen to start writing it was a big red one with happy faces all over it. Anyway, after that we proceeded to the Cliffs of ... read more

After a good night’s sleep in Westport, and a hearty Irish breakfast, minus the black and white pudding (been there, tried that) we managed to lose KB and Ryan on the first turn out of our B and B! In hindsight, we should have told them which way we would be turning, but as Kristelle waited at the top of the hill, we made our way to the bottom, realised our mistake, and backtracked, only to find they had already left. We did another quick sweep back into town, but gave up, and decided to head to Galway and meet there…at least that was the plan! We arrived in Galway at midday and commenced the search for the tourist information center - hopefully to meet up with KB and Ryan and to book the nights accommodation ... read more
