On Tuesday 13th October we left Galway and made our way south along the west coast and we did a few stops throughout the day. The first one was to an old castle/house where we were supposed to walk around anti-clockwise once for good luck. Although I am not too sure how true that was because one of the girls on the tour actually fell head first down the bank on the side of the castle - ouch! Then we stopped at a Leprechaun Wishing Well where we said our name whilst throwing a coin using our right hand over our left shoulder and the coin had to land directly in the water without touching any other part of the well and the Leprechauns would give us good luck. I had to have two goes at ... read more

Today we drove into the town of Killarney. Yesterday we drove the Ring of Kerry. We ventured off the main path and found some old castles and stone forts that had ben mentioned in a book we had. It was well worth it. We had each place to ourselves and didn't have to deal with any tour buses. We found a pull out spot along the road with an overlook of some cliffs and the beach to set up camp for the night. While there Scott got to play "medic morri" There were some people jumping of the clifs into the bay and one guy dove head first into shallow water landing on his head. Scott evaluated him and had an ambulance come out because he was pretty sure the guy had neck and/or spine fractures. ... read more

Wednesday 2 september Bags and breaky 7am Leave 8am The pastries at breakfast were delicious. We headed off in fairly nice but drizzly conditions to the National Irish Horse Stud. I thought it was going to be a boring stop, but it was a lovely, peaceful morning. The highlight was seeing Vintage Crop, who’s in retirement there. We saw the stallions, especially Invisible Spirit, who had covered 110 mares that season and is worth over $US 60 million. They know when the mares are in season by using a teaser horse. The guide, David, was informative and interesting. I had a quickl walk through the Japanese gardens, picked some clover and back to the bus by 10:40. It was a long drive to Killarney and John filled in the time by holding a limerick competition. It ... read more

Thursday 3 September This morning we were excited to go on the Ring Of Kerry excursion. We were lucky that the rain looked like it was stopping! Perfect timing. We drove off on some very narrow and dangerous roads. At one time, there was a near accident, when some idiot overtook us, nearly hitting oncoming traffic. The coach driver rang his licence plate into the police. The views were finally what I expected of Ireland. Beautiful coastlines and inlets. Many green mountains… although they did not compare to those in Scotland. Not even close. It was a lovely day though and the highlight in Ireland. We stopped at a tearoom for lunch that was intimate and lovely. We had delicious sandwiches and homemade scones. It was a lovely stop. I had a walk through the town ... read more

Today I left Killarney, but on the way out, stopped off to have a look at Ross Castle and St Margarets Cathedral. St Margarets is huge, and I was allowed to just wander in. The door seems to be always open. It was very peaceful. Headed out through Killorglin, Milltown, Castlemaine, Inch and arrived at Dingle. Dingle is very nice. Went to another milltown (which plays havoc with the GPS as after picking the town, you have to pick which county your in, which is not always clear on maps). Had an hour to kill, went to Ventry and saw Dunbeg Fort. Each fort i visit it different, unique in its own way. this one was perched on the edge of a cliff. there were parts of it that had fallen into the ocean, but that ... read more

Had a wonderful sleep and even better breakfast. This morning I ordered the traditional Irish breakfast. The black pudding was excellent. Left Rivermount House at 9am and headed along the coast, stopping at each town along the way. I avoided the beara peninsula and made it to Kenmare, which is just south of the Ring of Kerry. This is about a 180km loop around the Iveragh Peninsula. I ascended to a lookout point and stopped for some photos. I have been stopping quite often to take pictures of the changing landscape. If I keep this up all day then I will not get to my destination. I went over a Pass at the top of the Beara Peninsula, which is not listed on the map in front of me. It started with B. This was impressive, ... read more

I promised Sarah that I would get up and talk to her at 9am. I was abit late but I did stick to the promise cause thats the kinda guy I am! hahaha Booked a hostel in Killarney because thats what Marcus and I came up with as a backup to Galway which was fully crammed. Went for a last meal down the street for some breaky with Marcus. Wanted something healthy and cheap so I got granola fruit and yogurt which was freaking huge. Did the trick as well. Stopped off at the internet cafe downstairs to print out my bus ticket. Charged me like 4 dollars or something crazy. Packed up all my stuff after it had been drying from the first time I got to do a real load of laundry!! Marcus walked ... read more

First welcome to those that Michelle and I added to the Blog's email list. We'll be doing this once every couple of days or so... so have a read and don't expect any real good grammar... So yesterday was a marathon of a drive from Doolin to Killarney via the Dingle peninsula. We started the day with a quick drive to the Cliffs of Moher which are spectacular. We then took off south down towards the River Shannon, which is the widest river in Ireland at 5 miles, to cross on a ferry. On our way we stopped at St. Brigid's Well which was pretty cool. After that we learned a very valuable lesson... always carry spare side mirror with you while driving in Ireland; You see the roads are quite narrow and with all the ... read more

Blog 3- Friday, Saturday-Overnight to Killarney Summary: We left around 10:00 in the morning on Friday to head over to the Blarney Castle. Our bus driver is an avid golf player. Apparently Tiger Woods goes to a golf course 20 minutes from Dingle fairly often, and one of his friends got to caddy for him! Not a bad gig! Blarney Castle was really pretty(albeit pretty touristy). I kissed the Blarney Stone! On way back from the stone, there was an entire sheep herd crossing the street holding up traffic on the road we were on. It was hysterical! Killarney was fun. I found a really nice bodhran at this off the wall music instrument shop buried amongst the side street shops. It’s really nice, 16”, dark wood. Be sure to see the pics I posted Saturday. ... read more

I admit that I've turned into a neurotic eater and the potato has fallen victim to this. A summer of eating nothing but bland boiled potatoes has turned me away from this starch... with the exception of mashed potatoes. Mashed potatoes are something of an elusive craved dish as they have never been made at home... not even when growing up. They're just not a Chinese thing to make. Friends are aware of this and the dish forms a substantial part of my birthday dinners and they slip me doggy bags of it from other events such as Thanksgiving or Easter that I happen to crash. I'm in mash potato heaven in this part of the world. Ireland seems to have a long history with the potato (most notably the Irish Potato Famine in the 1850s) ... read more
