There was a slight rough start to the day, seeing as it was the day after St. Patricks day, we were all moving a little slow. We finally got all our belongings together and hopped on a bus from Galway to Limerick then caught our connection to Killarney from there. We didn't get in to Killarney until about dinner time, it was a good thing the B & B was right accross from the bus station because we were beat. We then went out to dinner at the only restaurant that appeared to be open, we walked in and everyone seemed to be feeling about as well as us! We had a few pints for the cure and then headed back for bed. The next morning we were all feeling like a million bucks and hopped ... read more

Geo: 52.0579, -9.50747 Today we just took a long drive around the Ring of Kerry. It's just this famous drive that lots of tourists do- it's very pretty and takes you along the coast past mountains and cliffs, green hills, rocking regions, forests, lakes, you name it we probably drove through it. Okay... maybe no deserts... but you get the idea. We didn't take as many pictures since there was a lot of driving involved... there's also some pictures of stereotypical Irish towns and stores (I just love the architecture). Our tour guide also told us about the Travelers (I know a lot about them already, but I'll recap since my last trip). I find them pretty interesting- they're modern day gypsies in Ireland. Have you seen the movie Snatch with Brad Pitt? His character is ... read more

Geo: 52.0579, -9.50747Today was a very busy day.First we started out our drive around Slea Head, which was an absolutely gorgeous drive. This was stereotypical Ireland- emerald green hills, aquamarine blue ocean, white sheep dotting the landscape- it was freakin amazing. We stopped first thin on this little pullout where you can follow this path down the side of the cliff and get some great views overlooking the ocean. Of course Chris and I were first down the mountain. Oh, there was also an awesome road sign on the side of the road. It's one of the "falling rocks" signs that had been graffitied with lil legs, so it looked like a "Falling Sheep" sign. lol, awesome. We continued around Slea Head, stopping at various places to take pictures. At one point there was an easily ... read more

Sorry for not writing in so long. We haven't done too much except explore the town of Killarney, which is similar to Galway. There hasn't been much to say before today. The hostel we are staying in is ok. We've made friends with the receptionist, she's from Australia, and she's really friendly. She was sick so we tried to help her out a little bit. Because of that she lets us get away with things that the other guests might not be able to, like eating breakfast after she puts it away, or using the internet for free (yay!). Also, we are sharing a room with 5 Germans. They really are everywhere. We also tried authentic Irish Stew. It was good, less thick than what we eat at home. I don't know about Allie, but I ... read more

Our third day started from Killarney and we went on what they call the Ring of Kerry tour which was 180 kms of winding and narrow roads. The Ring of Kerry revealed breathing sights of the area as well as coastal views of the Altanic. We visited an Irish sheepdog demonstration of hearding the flock up and down the side of a hill and seeing different breeds of sheep that are common to Ireland. We visited the Skellig experience to learn about the nearby rocky island where early christian monks lived in harsh conditions and today it is a thriving bird santuary. On the way back we stopped for a view of the three lakes of Killarney, then completing the trip back to our hotel. The fourth day of our trip saw us leaving Killarney and ... read more

Saw beehive monk stone huts, green hills, hedges, cows, sheep - breathtaking scenery. Stopped in the seaside village of Dingle. John found a leprachaun playing 'Irish Eyes are Smiling' in Adare - had to pay him in gold coins. Overnight in Ennis. 'Top of the morning to you'. 'And the rest of the day to yourself'.... read more

Rainy -went to a Bog Museum. Say no more!!!! Bog is peat which is burnt for fuel. In the past, the Irish depended on bog and potatoes but now they depend on the European Community. The Ring of Kerry gave us spectacular panoramic views in between the clouds. Lunched at the Scarrif Inn with the best view of all. Strolled around Killarney in the afternoon.... read more

Went to the seaside village of Youghal and saw where the movie " Moby Dick" starring Gregory Peck was made. John and Emily kissed the Blarney Stone and are now full of 'blarney' ------ germs! We are now in Killarney and went on a horse-drawn jaunty cart ride through the national park to Ross Castle - yes.... another castle! Went to Irish pub and had Irish stew and Murphy's stout - opposition to guinness. We are on our way to listen to some Irish pub music at the "Killarney Grand" pub. To be sure... to be sure!... read more

Occasionally, my non-traveling friends are less than enthused (okay, bored) to hear that I am planning yet another trip to the Emerald Isle. Their response is often something like "What can you possibly need to see there that you haven't already seen?" As I have made more than a dozen trips there over the past several years, I suppose I can see their point. I return to Ireland time and time again, not just for the sights, which truly are spectacular, but for the sounds- the beat of the bodhran (Irish drum) in an impromptu pub session, the good morning moo from a neighboring field to my cow-view room in a B&B, the colorful lilt of the Irish brogue, along with the many other sensations such as a softness in the air that I have ... read more

Said goodbye to Galway and took the bus to Killarney. The bus isn't a bad way to travel. It gives me a chance to plan a little (or sleep). I pretty much sorted out what I'm going to do in the UK on the ride down. When I got to town (around 130), I checked into the hostel (Neptune's....not bad) and then rented a bike to go explore the National Park on the edge of town. The guy who rented me the bike gave me a map and suggested that since it was so late in the day I ride around the lake but not do the full loop around the lake and the gap of Dunloe. Of course that was just a challenge for me! I took off on the bike around the scenic lakes ... read more
