We were traveling with a much smaller group this trip. Gail assembled a group of 18 people for our tour of Ireland, Scotland and England. We were concerned that EF might merge our group with another smaller group in order to fill a 50 person bus, but she was assured that we were going to be left on our own. They were true to their word. Around noon we had Tyler drop Gail, her mom and I off at the high school. Like the previous trip we met up with a bus that took us to Kennedy airport. And once again we "shortcut" through a very crowded Manhattan then crawled through Queens to JFK. It took us over 3 hours to cover what normally takes about 2. Once we all "enjoyed" dinner at Kennedy, we passed ... read more

Day 25, Friday June 16: Dublin to (London)Derry On Friday, I met up with my new backpacking group and we headed to Northern Ireland, officially part of the UK, not the Republic of Ireland.. This is obviously a tense political subject with the people here and as recently as 1998, there were regular killings and bombing in N.Ireland, until the cease fire agreement.. Quickly it comes down to Protestants vs Catholics, or the British supporters vs the Ireland supporters. Both feel very strongly about who they should be ruled under and show themselves (Derry is divided by the river), British flags wave on one side, Ireland flags on the other. We received a tour of the city from a Catholic, who believes that he is Irish, not british, and actually holds on to an Irish Passport. ... read more

After a pleasant trip from Cork, we found Kilarney International Youth Hostel without too much trouble (only one wrong turn!). We checked in about 9:30am, stored our luggage and bought 2 Ring of Kerry Tour tickets @16.50 Euros each. The sights were awesome! We stopped once to watch a presentation by an Irish shepherd, explaining the different types of sheep and demonstrating how his sheepdogs work. They were something and the whole thing was very informative and only 4 Euros. We stopped for lunch at the Scariff Inn. The food was good, but very expensive (13 Euros for a small bowl of soup, a small salad, and water). After lunch we stopped several times for picture-taking and rest/shopping. Got back to hostel about 5:30pm. Bus is called by the hostel, so very easy to do, picking ... read more

I flew into County Kerry, Ireland from Frankfurt on Sunday afternoon, and of course it was raining when we touched down. By the time I got to my hostel in Kilarney it was pouring and the day was pretty much a waste as almost everything was closed so I went and saw the Di Vinci Code. When I got back to my hostel I met 2 of my roommates who just happened to be from North Carolina. It seems we had an American themed room, because our other roommates were from Colorado and Wisconsin. We lucked out on Monday as the sun stayed out for most of the day. I took a tour of the Ring of Kerry, a scenic drive that went through the Kilarney National Park, along the coast and through the mountains. I ... read more

Hello everyone! Ireland is as beautiful as we expected - we've seen rolling hills (and some mountains even), rugged coastline, lots of stone fences and even more sheep and cattle. The weather is also about what we thought - cold and rainy. Yesterday we were driving around the Ring of Kerry and saw a full double rainbow!! Of course, the pubs are numerous, probably couldn't walk a hundred steps without running into one. Last night we had a blast drinking Guinness and listening to some Irish music. Right as we left, the owner came by and chatted with us for a while, explaining the tradition of Munster rugby - he even brought out a rugby "ball" and taught us some rules. We haven't run into many Ryans yet, but we're headed up to Tipperary tomorrow, which ... read more

Waking up about 4-5 hours after putting my head down I was up. This time I wasn't going to miss the complimentry breakfast off Toast and Marmalade! By 9.30am I had packed my bags, checked out and had made myself down to Cork Bus Station as I would be taking a bus to a place called Killarney. Famous for its rugged landscape and mountainous landscapes. 3 hours of sitting on the bus and we arrived in Killarney. Town itself is small but bustling. It has much more appeal off itself than Cork. Killarney has all the old appeal to it yet it generates a lot of atmosphere with its people. After checking into my hostel it appeared the room was full off people. Nearly all the beds where taken thus I got myself a top bunk ... read more

Here I am in beautiful Killarney...its so nice here...probably due to its small town-esque. I have decided on this trip that the big towns are just not me. I think deep down I was just a tree hugging hippie...wait what am i saying! So yesterday since it was supposed to rain (do they really need to provide a forecast here?) I decided to be nice and warm on a bus tour of the ring of kerry. Quite beautiful actually. Too bad I could hardly understand the tour guide. The bus was chock full of Americans who had not a clue what he was saying...well at least we got some great scenery. However...I was SOOO damn cold all day. and mind you this is with several layers on and a jacket and a scarf. I never warmed ... read more

THE RING OF KERRY The ROK cuts a loop around a peninsular & there is some top scenery. Mountains, forests, roads hugging the hills along the coast with H2O falls roadside, little villages, pub, beaches & very skinny roads. (The roads r 2 way but most of the time u can only just fit 1 so if another car comes u havta back it up to a wide spot) We stayed in a little village called Catherdaniel for a night in a little hostel that we had to our selves. There was a real nice beach & lads where having a surf I was so jealous but it was bloody cold. GOLT We where planning on stayin in Limerick but we drove through and it didn’t look like there was much craic, so we drove on ... read more

Ok so the past few nights ok for the past week we have been drinking like fishes and have been having a great time. Jen and i got to know our neighbors and we actually enjoy their company. They make fun of us and it makes us relaize the differences between us and our countries. Theyre outlook on life is so different from ours and they actually make me feel kind of spoiled living in the UNited States. They call us F*ckin Yanks... and theyr accent is just hilarious. You can barely understand them because they speak so fast, and they use different words. Once again it was time to buckle down and do another group trip, so it actually looks like we were doing something while we were over here to our college. Our next ... read more
