Ireland Monday If I was a dour fellow I would say that the scenery today was quite good. If I was the flamboyant sort I would say that it was absolutely wonderful, even looking through my rose coloured spectacles. However, the wind was in our face for the whole day which made riding very difficult, even though we only climbed 530 metres it felt like 1000. I was really glad to finish the ride, which was made worse by the rain for the last two hours. Mostly we followed the coast which took us on a very twisty route in the boulder strewn countryside occupied by donkeys, horses and the occasional sheep. Away from the coast we encountered many lakes and ponds which the Irish call loughs and quite a few Bonny thatched cottages and hotels. ... read more

Lovely blue skies greet us as we take the train to Galway. A lovely lady named Berna sits beside me on the journey. She taught school for 40 years, and raised a Downs syndrome son whom she wrote a book about. Berna presented me with a copy of this booklet at the conclusion of our train trip. Galway means stony river. In 1477 Christopher Columbus visited here. On arriving, the weather changes to drizzle. We devour bowls of steaming seafood chowder at Hooked restaurant, and then stroll through Nun Island featuring canals and waterfalls. The following day takes us to the center of the city, and grand public park Eyre Square. It is sometimes referred to as the John F. Kennedy Memorial Park as he visited Galway and gave a speech in the square in June ... read more

In a winding turn on a road in Connemara a majestic abbey raises her head: the Kylemore Abbey. A hunting lodge originally stood where the Abbey is today. We toured this castle that was created for Mitchell Henry’s wife, Margaret, after 1850. The Abbey currently is the home of Benedictine nuns who have been apart of Kylemore since 1920. It also was once an International Boarding School. Down a rather long path, we stepped into the Walled Gardens, a six-acre garden that uniquely uses plants and flowers introduced to Ireland before 1901. It’s a spectacular display of floral specimens including herbs. There was a big porker hanging on one side of the gardens and after we met her, Kathy who is on tour with us, meandered with me through the fairy garden, and then many of ... read more

“Whether the weather be hot, or whether the weather be not, we‘ll weather the weather, whatever the weather, whether we like it or not!” - Irish saying The weather is definitely not hot! It was fairly rainy today on the road, but no matter, we still had a great day. We had to leave O’Neills before they served breakfast, but we were still able to have some cereal, coffee, and soda bread (yumm) before we left just after 7:30. We walked to Paddy’s Palace hostel, where we were starting our Paddywagon 3 day tour of Southern Ireland. We set off just after 8 am, picked up a few more people at the other pick up location, and headed out of Dublin. Our driver/guide is Alex, who is a great driver and full of information and stories. ... read more

On the last day of May the gusting wind blew so hard it pushed the heavy rain to pour sideways and down drenching everything and everybody. But we were on our way to Connemara, to visit Kylemore Abbey, a Benedictine community welcoming visitors for almost one hundred years, since 1920. We could have wished for a more pleasant day, clear, or even with scattered showers, but our luck had run out. Umbrellas were almost no use, many turning inside out with the wind, but most of us had raincoats or at least coats that were somewhat water-resistant. Expecting less than beautiful weather in Ireland I had come prepared, wearing ankle boots and a good warm coat. My umbrella lasted a bit, so that was somewhat helpful too. What we could see of the Abbey through the ... read more

Day 07 We planed today for some shopping, and checking out some sights that might be of interest. One of the first items was a championship golf course, one ranked among the top 10 in the world. Connemara Golf Course. We were going to shop in their Pro Shop for some things for Mike and Gail, and get to see the golf course that is aired in some of the major championship games. We put in the location, and set off after breakfast to begin our journey. We went on some very narrow roads, some with lines down the middle, and some without lines down the middle, because they were narrow, and bridges on them were single file bridges, where only one car could pass while the other side waited. Lots of pretty country side, and ... read more

It has been a quieter but fun week in Galway, while I’ve stayed with friends Robert and Héctor. Married in 2014, they emigrated here from Oregon in 2017, and now own a spacious and light flat in the suburb of Taylor’s Hill, which they share with their Bengal cat, Carlotta. The timing of my visit worked out perfectly for me to connect with my “Nutcracker” friends from Richmond, Virginia. We met in 1991 for a divorce support group at the University of Richmond, and have been close ever since. They’re on an escorted tour of Ireland, so we had only a few hours in the city center, but it’s astonishing and gratifying that we were immediately our old selves together! I’ve learned the bus routes, and walked Galway City and Salt Hill on Galway Bay extensively, ... read more

Went for a long city walk in Galway today. Still a bit breezy, but no rain, so a good day to walk. Took in all the important historical sites like the Spanish Arch, Galway Harbor, St. Nicholas Collegiate Church (built in 1320, hosted Christopher Columbus once), Lynch’s Castle, the Browne Doorway, and Eyre Square, where JFK spoke in 1963. Circled back past the Cathedral to make sure our car was still there and it was OK. Then back to our place to get ready for dinner. Restaurant Dela for dinner. Farm to table, and they grow all their own produce. Delish! Pot of chocolate for dessert; looked like a pot of dirt, tasted like heaven.... read more
