Fall is coming quickly to Ireland, with cooler nights and more frequent showers. There has been some sunshine also, but we're looking forward to warmer weather in India soon. We didn't realize that the rain and wind in Dingle were unusually heavy, until the locals explained that we were experiencing the western edge of Hurricane Gordon. While waiting for the storm to blow over, we were able to get tickets for Dingle's Wednesday night concert series. The quartet included a local guitarist, a fiddler from Virginia, as well as Rita Connolly (a vocalist) and harmonium player Shaun Davy. We could tell we were listening to an all star group of celtic musicians when the guitarist just happened to mention that he had written one of Corey's favorite songs performed by Mary Black. After a very wet ... read more

In Dublin’s fair city Dave and Gav were so witty Filling all that they said with innuendo Toured castle to river But the nightlife delivered Drinking: Guiness and larger In style, style-o Had an excellent time in Dublin. Flew there by my first (of many) RyanAir flights - my flights cost ₤0.01 each!! (yes - I am pretty excited about that!). Of course, there were taxes as well, and a fee for putting my bag in the hold, as you still can’t carry any toiletries on flights, but still awesome. No 1 cent flights in Sydney yet!!! The main reason for heading to Dublin (apart from wanting to hear someone say ‘To be sure, to be sure’ in normal conversation with no piss-taking) was to catch up with McLure and Gav who were there as part ... read more

Well, the time has arrived for me to shut up shop at the “BTC Ireland office”, where I’ve been working for the last four weeks. This means my travels are about to begin! I must say I quite liked the BTC Ireland office… the dress code was very relaxed, the food was excellent and although we didn’t have a fancy coffee machine, the alternatives weren’t bad! The only tickets we’ve booked so far are for the Trans Siberian train from Moscow to Beijing. The plan is not to have too many plans! We'll go with the flow, eventually ending up Australia sometime before Christmas. Our estimated departure date is October 3rd. Likely Route: Dublin - UK - Brussels - Koln - Moscow - Irkutsk - Ulan Bator - Beijing- Shanghai - Hong Kong - Bangkok - ... read more

We are going to divide and conquer today. We have 6 people and 2 ½ hours in Dublin before we catch the train to meet the McGinty’s in Tralee. Of course Mike and I are in charge of the Guiness Brewrey. One amazing place . The land the huge facility is on was leased in the 1700's for the sum of 45 pounds a year for 9000 years. Quite a good business move. The end of the tour is the very best. At the top of the 7th floor is a 360 degree glassed in lounge. What a beautiful view of Dublin. We met a gentleman from Australia, a young lady from Washington, and I spent about ½ hour just taking photos. We left Dublin at 1:00 and arrived in Tralee to the greeting s of ... read more

We checked out of our hotel / hostel?, and managed post office, shopping stop before we headed to the airport for our hop to Dublin.” Liverpool John Lennon International“was in itself an amazing tribute to John and the Beatles. There were Bronze statues, poetry on the walls, even a yellow submarine in the parking lot. Our cabbie named Paul gave us a half hour tour to the airport for the price of a cab. The one hour flight was nice. Security is still pretty tight though. We are all taking turns getting patted down. This was my turn. Weird experience. Its very green and very dreary. We feel right at home. We arrived at the hotel ( very nice) in downtown Dublin, settled in and waited for the Ted & DeNise to arrive. We had a ... read more

Kenji was again working so I trained into town and caught up with Lyndsay, who I had met on Saturday night. She showed me around a bit of the city and we sat in Saint Stephens Green, a park in the city centre. We went and got fish & chips, and I have learnt that no one can match NZ fish & chips for price or quality. I get cravings for them, pies and l&p. Later on that arvo, we went for a pint before catching the new Will Ferrell movie ‘Talladega Nights’, he plays an indy car racer, and it is hilarious. I want to see it again. (Thanks heaps Lyn for hanging out with me). I didn’t really get up to much, for the next day, as it was raining again, just stayed inside ... read more

Ah, Dublin. Home to Guinness...and many other wonderful sights, I'm sure. Unfortunately, in three days in Dublin I really didn't manage to do much sightseeing at all. I came down with a cold (first, and surely not the last of the trip) that managed to dictate my activities pretty well: Eat. Rest. Eat. Rest... So, what did I manage to do in Dublin besides eating and sleeping? Well, I couldn't bring myself to skip seeing the Guinness Storehouse, and to taste the finest Guinness in all the land -- at the source. Yes, the Guinness really is better here, and the question of whether the 14 euro entry is worth it really depends on how much you like Guinness, and how many free pints you manage to get. Let me start from the beginning. I went ... read more

Kenji had to work so I got a train into Dublin, it was a shitty cold day, raining and windy. That didn’t sop me from walking around the town and having a look. I got caught at one stage on a traffic island during a down pour and had to wait for the lights to change before I could take cover. I decided after that to take refuge in an internet café, and worked out where the Guinness factory was. Once I worked it out I braved the conditions, and made my way there. The tour is self guided, so you can just go at your own pace. To start with you learn about the four ingredients, barley, hops, yeast and water. Then you see the processes used to make it, and read about the Guinness ... read more
