Got some washing on, discovered that the lady had put wifi on, got the bikes down & cycled into town for lunch. We had a drink in the first place we went to but they only served toast. The next place Cathy didn't like as she felt ogled at so we left & found a traditional Greek taverna which did us a smashing lunch with local wine too. The town was very quiet & hardly any tourists about at all & tourism is this town's livelihood. We'd left the bikes against a railing – the saddles were like hot plates & we could hardly touch them! Cycling back felt like a hot stone bum massage. Got back & hit the pool which wasn't a great relief as it was really warm. Busy too – again like ... read more

ABBA, turquoise water, picturesque towns and an insane airport In June we went on a for us slightly unusual kind of trip - a package tour. Ake's mother turns 70 this year and she wanted to celebrate this by going abroad with the entire family for a week. The easiest way to arrange a trip for 8 people was to arrange everything in advance through a tour operator. This made even more sense since the plan was to stay in one hotel the entire week and make excursions and day trips from there. After some deliberation we decided on going to the island Skiathos in Greece. Skiathos has been a tour destination for a long time. No surprise there since picture perfect villages, warm reliable weather and turquoise water tend to draw tourists. In resent years ... read more

Dr. Seuss said it best, " Oh, the places you will go." Today I went to a place I'd never heard of that has been in existence since the 9th Century A.D. It is Meteora, which means "suspended in the air." There are a series of monasteries perched atop pinnacles that rise 1,000 feet above the valley. The rocks sit between the Thessalian plain in the east and the Pindos mountains in the west. 30 million years ago the entire valley was under a lake. Earthquakes left the sandstone rocks which now form these strange peaks. In the 9 th century monks sought refuge from invaders( those pesky Turks) in the caves of Meteora. Since they believed that the higher up you got the closer to heaven you were these rocks/caves fit their needs. Well, we ... read more

First, an apology for all the upside down and sideways pictures. I haven't figured out why they are loading that way but suggestions have been made that it is possibly because I am uploading directly from my iPhone. Thanks Apple. I will try to straighten things out when I get home. As I told you the wifi on the ship was very poor so I basically stopped trying to write. It took forever to send anything and it was a mess. Now we are touring through the mountains of Greece and I really don't have the time or energy to do justice to the beautiful places I have seen. Hopefully, I'll get to them after I get home. The good news is that we weathered the storm which, according to the Capt., was the windiest he ... read more

Total distance travelled: 2,740 nautical miles The ship departed at 4pm on the dot. Rhodes is only a stones though from this part of the Turkish coast and sure enough after about an hour we could see the Greek Island on our portside. We were about 5 miles off shore. During the 342 nautical miles across the Aegean Sea to Volos we passed Greek Islands too numerous to mention. Another excellent show was produced called: The Land of the Pharaohs. The costumes, as expected were Egyptiany although the same acts from the other shows made an appearance albeit in a change of costume in keeping with the theme. The boy swinging on a rope was there. I bet kids must have hated him at school as there is always one smart arse kid who can shimmy ... read more

This is the view from my room on the second floor, no 13, perhaps not so unlucky in Greece! There was loud thunder and some rain overnight, but this cleared to leave a cloudless blue sky. We've spent the day round the pool, reading and chatting with the occasional dip. Although the very pleasant and helpful receptionists tell us the hotel is full, a lot of people must have gone to the beach or on trips as it wasn't crowded round the pool today. We're getting ready to walk the 10 mins round the bay to the harbour front where all the shops and restaurants are. Don't forget we're 2 hours ahead. Have a good evening.... read more

October 17, 2013 After long debates as to where we should go and what we should see when we got to Greece, we ultimately went with recommendations from a couple of friends that used to live there and added Meteora to our itinerary...decided to do an organized tour due to our time constraints, so headed out early in the morning with an overnight excursion that would include Delphi, Thermopylae, overnight in Kalambaka and then visit a couple of the monasteries of Meteora in the morning...okay! Hooked up with the tour and headed out of town, first stop Delphi...considered to be the navel of the Earth by the ancient Greeks and home of the oracles, it is a beautiful site perched on the side of Mt. Parnassos...fantastic spot, spent some time with the guide from our tour ... read more

Perama to Meteora - Day 9 Monday 16th September The alarm woke me up at 7.30 but I refused to believe it was this time as it was dark and foggy, yes I said foggy, outside. So foggy, I couldn't see the huge looking mountains that I knew were directly behind our hotel. So I went back to bed and then heard an all too familiar sound that I also refused to believe - rain! And a lot of it. We set off to the Perama caves, and unlike most major tourist sites we have visited, they had a massive sign pointing to where they are. In fact the sign stretches over the street, with the words "Stop Cave". You can't miss it. There were three staff outside the cave who looked thoroughly miserable at our ... read more
