As promised, the Greek Adventure! Part 1. (Jetlagged) After super Jono (that's pronounced Yono in some countries, ie: whatever country I'm in), made the train and comfortably ate our victory sandwiches, we rolled into Frankfurt's main train station around 9pm. We found a reasonable hostel where we could get a decent night's sleep, and get a private room. Considering we had only about a total of 6 hours in the room, we thought we should "splurge" and try and get a little sleep. When reading reviews of our hostel on hostel world (every backpackers favorite website, www.hostelworld.com) people said it was in a bit of a sketchy area, but they didn't mind the hostel itself, because it was really close to the train station. Because we needed to take the train to the airport early the ... read more

Crete is a really nice place. I would recommend it to anyone. There are places like Malia which is full of English kids (showing my age now) getting pissed everynite but there are so many really nice towns and sights to visit which more that make up for the Malia's. The Greek people are so kind and generous its made the start of our adventures a pleasure The weather here is now a constant 35oC. I went snorkelling yesterday (saw loads on green/yellow fish and crabs etc) for about an hour. My back is now bright red! I was talking to the owner of the local taverna about it and when we left, after our usual on the house shot of Raki and choc cake, he gave me a tub of natural yoghurt to smother on ... read more

We've been here just over a week now. The tans have gone from lobster red to a suttle brown now so we are starting to blend in. We've got a hire car and have visited loads of good towns/sites. Visited Knossos palace the other day. Was built around 6000 years ago and the stuff they did and had are amazing. This was all 4000BC! They had proper water pipes running around the palace because they wouldnt drink from the local river. When they excavated the site they found vases, flasks, hair pins, marble "board games" and loads of other stuff. Went to the local waterpark and am battered and bruised from all the slides and rides. The temp is usually around 30oC but we were walking around in 36oC on Wed! There is always a cool ... read more

Jan and Rodger did a day trip to Agios Nikolaos and here are their comments on their day……..Rodger and I had a sleep in as we had decided that the trip to Chania was too long a day for us. We went to the bus station to take the local bus to Agios Nikolaos a pretty port town on the eastern end of Crete. The bus left at 10.30 a.m. and wound through the outer suburbs of Heraklion, past the airport. Further out we came to the sea and followed the coastline past sandy beaches and numerous resorts, The beaches are all set up with sun lounges and umbrellas all sprouting like mushrooms, all different colours. One suspects you would have to pay to use them. No one on the beach as it was windy. Further ... read more

We arrived at Heraklion about 8.30 pm and two swish Mercedes took us to the Olympic Hotel in central Heraklion where we booked in and headed off over the reconstructed streets for dinner. The road in front of the hotel extends through the maze of walkways to the harbour and is the main street in front of the hotel is the day market street. We were directed to a local open-air restaurant, which did not have a printed menu and was like Nicholas’ restaurant in Santorini where they suggest some alternatives; you order and it’s delivered. The whole areas down to the sea side are full of walkways with an occasional motorbike wandering about but the cars have been locked off. There are lovely squares abutting the walkways with open-air restaurants around the plazas and under ... read more

Greetings from Athens! I promised to keep this blog a bit shorter than the last, so hopefully this won’t be too long. As many of you know, I’ve been in Greece for the last 12 days or so, doing a one-course study abroad program that lasts a month. So far we’ve already been to Crete, Santorini, Naxos, the Peloponnese, and Athens. It’s been exhausting moving from hotel to hotel every few days, but the sights have been amazing. The food here is really good, even though I have to say I’m getting a little tired of bread with olive oil, Greek salad, and yogurt. And after Germany it’s definitely nice travelling with other Americans. We switch roommates every time we change hotels, which has done a surprisingly good job at preventing cliques from forming. Our tour ... read more

Mr. Tountas took us up to the bus stop on the National Road to catch our bus to Iraklio (Heraklion). We thought the bus would come before 10am, so when a bus showing "Iraklio" stopped, we started to board, but the driver's assistant saw our tickets and told us "No, wrong bus line. Next one in 10 minutes." I was under the impression there was only one bus line on Crete, KTEL, but we waited and sure enough another came in 15 minutes. Arriving in Iraklio at 12:15, we decided to take a taxi to our hotel, Pension/Hotel Rea, for 7 Euros. I think they charge extra for luggage. The hotel wasn't anything special and was a bit run down, but clean and, at 34 Euros a night cheap for Iraklio. It is only one block ... read more

Today we rented a car because Crete is kind of hard to navigate by bus. We drove about 45 minutes to Agios Nikolas, a harbour city. The highways are quite nice here with plenty of signs. We found out the lines on the roads are just a suggestion. People pass you at any time no matter who is coming in the other lane. The drivers expect you to merge over to the shoulder so they can pass. At Agios we took a boat trip to the island of Spinalonga. This was a leprocy colony during the 1900's. The last person left in 1958. Before that it was a venitian fortress. Then the turkish people took over. The island itself is very small. It took only 20 minutes to walk around the whole island. At one time ... read more

Nothing much to report today. We had a minor disaster last night. We arrived at the airport at 20:30 for our 23:30 flight to Crete. I could not find our flight on the board. When I finally found someone to ask, we were informed the flight left at 19:30!!! I had checked the airlines web site earlier in the day and the flight was still on schedule. We called the travel agent we booked the ticket with and they stated they had been looking for us for 2 days. This would have been an impossible task as there must be 3000 hotel and apts in Rhodes. Their advice for us was to book another flight out of Rhodes and try to get a refund from the missed flight. Luckily there was an Olympic flight leaving at ... read more

So it has been a whole week since my last entry! I have actually been unable to reach a computer in that time, and Samaria Gorge seems like a long while ago. When I last wrote, we were just leaving Chania, to go to Kissamos Kastelli, a town on the west coast from which we could reach a few good beaches. Right after I wrote that entry we went to the tourist office and found out that those beaches are all inaccessible at this time of year. SO, we decided to go to Elafonisi instead. Elafonisi is a wonderful spot on the southwest corner of the island. When we first got off the ferry, we couldn't see any buildings at all; just low hills rolling up to the northerly mountains, all covered in dark green scrub, ... read more
