August 13, 2006 Olga and I got home really late this morning from the internet cafe. I made it around 3AM and was so hungry. I ate two souvlaki sticks and then drank a beer. I was still wide awake and then tried to turn on the TV. I had a really hard time turning it on - all TV sets in Greece are mental! I was finally able to turn it on my doing a "channel up". Anyways, watched some lame programming and then finally passed out. Adriano in the meantime was sound asleep. Then at around 9AM Olga gave me my wake-up call. We were supposed to get up much earlier than that to leave for 7AM to see the Parthenon - yeah right! I quickly got ready and then walked over to my ... read more

13-08-2006 My aunt riefly woke me up yesterday morning by opening and closing the light really early in the morning. She was leaving early Saturday morning to go to work. Bummer! She works six days a week. I can't remember what she said because as most people have discovered I am not a morning person and everything is incomprehensible to me at that early hour. Later on in the morning at around 9:00 I got a call from my sister reminding me that Maria was coming to get us at 10:00 to go shopping. I quickly got up and got ready. Left the house at 9:30 and started walking to my uncle Nick's house. While I was walking I was getting the butterflies in my stomach again from being excited too much. I still couldn't believe ... read more

13-08-2006 I arrived in Athens on August 11th at around noon. It was a good trip and met a lot of interesting people. Half the time I was standing up and chatting with strangers. Then met a childhood friend that I hadn't seen in years - and he was so drunk! We told him a few times to quiten down, but no luck. The stewardess asked us politely four times to take our seats, but we just ignored her. Then the captain came and insisted that we really sit down. Our drunk friend finally fell asleep and we were able to resume our chatting quietly and everyone could tolerate us. The flight was finally over and it went by really quick. I got my luggage instantly and was heading for a taxi with another person I ... read more

Well today is our second day in Athens and I have only just stumbled upon an internet cafe. Athens seems to have pretty much everything you need (and a lot of things that you most certainly don't need) apart from internet cafes and sports bars. But more on that later ... I am travelling through Greece (Athens-Mykonos-Santorini) for the next week or so with my friend Jane from Uni days. Jane and I flatted together for a couple of years and has been over here in the UK teaching for the past year or so. We left Heathrow early on Friday morning (the day after my arrival from NZ) and flew Swiss Air to Athens via a stopover in Zurich and landed in the late afternoon. From our hotel in Monastiraki we are really close to ... read more

Visiting Athens was initially a means of getting out to 3 weeks of love that the Greek Isles promised to deliver - but after spending a few days there I realised it offered more than just just stinking hot weather and gorgeous Gyros. The draw card of Greece is undoubtedly the Acropolis, and by marvelling at the scaffold-encrusted temple I was educated on several fronts. Firstly I learnt that this sacred site was once home to the cult of Athena - goddess of the city that took her name. I also learnt that it encompassed the Parthenon, completed in an incomprehensible 438BC. But perhaps what I found most astonishing was that the TV series "Acropolis Now" was never actually filmed there. Days walking round in Havi's (thongs for the unfashionably insensitive) saw us hit Olympic Sites, ... read more

AthensKaren Bowden Another easy flight to Athens and another early start, the train systems in Athens are brilliant, very easy to get around anywhere in the city. with a slight hiccup with hotels which was fixed more easily then us getting lost a few times and me successfully running over a pigeon with my baggage on day one, we chilled out looked through a huge archaeological museum, and a play with kaz new video camera. Day 2 saw us walking up to the acropolis which for kaz and I was much deeper then either of our Greek history would take us, very overwhelming and quite surreal that we were standing in the middle of Athens and over looking the ruins of the acropolis, Hadrian’s arch, roman invasions and so very much more, (sorry Leah you will ... read more

Hi all, As you can see, in Athens now. Actually staying in nice hotel with air conditioning. Some people are easily pleased aren't they? Last time I wrote I was in Rome, very hot. Traveled down from Rome via Pompei to cross the sea to Greece. Pompei was scortching. Very interesting to see all the ruins that have been discovered also good to see the others which are being uncovered at the moment. Could not see the volcano because of the haze, but have the picture on a postcard. Went on an overnight ferry to Greece. In Greece they work on ish time. We arrived at the ferry around 7 and Brad said it was due to leave about 8:30 or when everything was on the boat. We managed to unpack bags, eat dinner, walk around ... read more

I have recently re-emerged from a five day stint of relaxing on the Grecian island of Spetses. The weather, in case you’re interested, was hot and sunny. Everyday. Which was perfect for soaking up the sun and lounging around by the pool. This, by the way, pretty much encompassed our daily schedule. Everyday, Mom and Aunt Judy would wake, go for a walk, then I’d join them for breakfast. Following breakfast, we’d reward our hard work at standing in the buffet line by retiring to said pool. There, a steady routine of swim, read, nap, swim, read, nap was implemented. Around the dinner hour we’d make our way into town in search of sustenance. This proved to be our biggest challenge during the day: deciding where to eat. Given the sheer quantity of culinary delights offered ... read more

so we left roma at 6 am to start our 31 hours of traveling to get to athens. took the train from roma to ancona where the ferry left to go to patras the athens port. at the harbor we met some other canadians who were from toronto and hand lunch with them while we waited for the boat. then in line to get on the ferry we met some more canadians all from ottawa who we chilled with the on the boat. the ferry was huge it looked like a cruse ship it had a full bar, a pool, a duty free shop (which would come in very hand when the chap beer we bought on shore ran out), and two restaurants it was nuts. it was great we got killer seats on the upper ... read more
