It didn't happen yesterday, for which I am grateful, but today there is a public transit strike. No worries though, Leslie and I had plans to be tourists so we just walked all over town, all the way to the Acropolis. You can just imagine how it would have been minus all the city buildings, coming upon this huge creation at the top of a hill you can see for miles. I can see it right now from Leslie's place, and it's all lit up at night which is wonderful. There's been some deterioration of the structures because of the pollution, and most of the ancient buildings are surrounded by scaffolding, which is too bad because it totally ruins the look. Metal and ancient stones just should not mix, but otherwise it might fall down, and ... read more

Hey everyone, first update from 'on the road'. This entry is being typed by me (kelly) this time around, as I couldn't stand writing in the 3rd person, like footballers do. Anyway, we got here fine, courtesy of Thomson Hols, boy do I hate package holidays, flights full of chav familys, with lousy clothes and burberry luggage, but we survived check in nonetheless. This despite the fact that the SNOTTIEST scottish woman in all of Gatwick managed to check us in and seat us apart, across the flippin aisle from each other. Those of you that know me well (so all of you then!) know I hate take off, but I was a brave girl and managed not to die from fear, especially as I was unable to hold Ju's hand on take off. So, after ... read more

I got in at a ridiculously early time this morning, and met Leslie at the metro station. The overnight bus was quite the experience, lots of getting onto ferries (and off the bus) and back on and off again. Our driver was quite the character too... crazy driver for an oversized pink bus. Now I am in Athens at Leslie and John's place, and we are going to go to a travel agent and sort out some ferry stuff. Also, Leslie hasn't visited the Acropolis here (gasp!) so we are going to do some touristy stuff around the city, and go to the market in a little while. We are making Greek potatoes tonight too, and after trying them at the cute Lemon Tree cafe in Corfu well I guess I ought to learn to make ... read more

If people in Greek spoke Spanish I would think about moving there. The country is stunning and my time with the Kremidas family was so encouraging. The week started out with seeing Condoleezza Rice’s convoy rush from the Athens airport to the US Embassy. This was one of the many reminders of home as I got a taste of true hospitality from the Kremidas’. Getting to stay in a home with such good friends was a real treat. Damaris and I drove to Olympia on Wednesday and discovered that Greeks take their ruins very seriously. We got in trouble for trying to pose in front of a statue. Apparently it isn’t respectful to stand in front of the statue for a picture. At least I was able to reenact the athletes in the original stadium without ... read more

Hello All, We flew from Tel Aviv to Athens, and were enchanted by the beauty of Athens, a huuuuge city, stretching as far as the eye can see in all directions. It's relatively flat with a few large hills. Most impressive is the Acropolis (which means city on high land), topped by the Parthenon. Because of the recent Olympics, Athens has been modernized: new subway system, more organized, and higher prices. But one thing that never changes is the rock and ancient buildings, some 2500 year old, which often sit next door to a modern shop or restaurant. The Greek people have great respect for thier history, culture and mythology, but are not so open to assimilation of other cultures or religions. 95% of the inhabitants of Greece belong to the Greek Orthodox church, and there ... read more

Took a seven hour ferry from Santorini to Sifnos, with a few stops at other islands along the way - now we can say we have visited 5 Greek islands! Sifnos may be my favorite part of this vacation - the island had a very sleepy Greek, non-touristy feel to it. Our hotel is very cute, on a top of a hill overlooking the capital village of Appolonia, and lots of cats hanging around (I know that the people at the hotel are sneaking them food). Thursday night we walked down to the town square for dinner - 180 steps downhill (dad counted), and stopped at the Beautiful Sifnos Tavern (seriously), the food here is the best yet. Caper salad, tzaziki, stuffed squid, and grilled eggplant and onions in tomato sauce - I think dad wants ... read more

After landing in Athens and checking into our perfectly located hotel, we wasted no time heading straight up to the imposing Acropolis site high on the hill near our hotel. While much of the site is under re-construction to fix up prior renovation stuff ups, it is still an amazing site. The Parthenon is the jewel in the crown of the area and it’s huge front is still as it stool in 527BC, and amazing temple and hard to believe it was built so long ago. The Theatre of Dionysos is just as incredible. From there we headed to the Ancient Agora, a mass of ruins just as impressive as the Roman Forum in Rome. From there it was to the smaller roman forum and the Temple of the Olympian Zeus, the ruins of what must ... read more

What a horrible tourist trap Athens is. Actually it's not that bad. I've arrived during the Easter break so its alot quieter than I imagine it is usually, and clear, cool and sunny. I am a little stranded however, having waited a couple of nights for all the monuments to reopen, and now a couple more before I'm able to fly out on Thursday (to Munich of all places). Athenians are fleeing in droves so most flights are booked solid through the week, but not to Germany (I wonder why?). I spent a few very sad hours today loitering among the airline booths at departures with the naive hope of a 'last-minute' ticket to somewhere. Days of 'last-minute' it seems are definitely at an end (at least here). The island hopping was very enjoyable. Santorini as ... read more
