we are overjoyed to report that this fairy ride went one hundred times better then the previous one. of course, that is easy for me to say since i slept about 13 hours and the fairy ride only lasted about 16 hours. i'm not quite sure if the fatigue set in from the whole trip or the medicine we bought from the nice lady in venice that we trust were for sea sickness, made me tired...but i slept. and then there were a few trains to catch and finally we were in athens. our hostel is in a great location, which is always a plus...that is the building of our hostel. our actual room in the hostel is probably the highest floor in their ownership. but although we have acquired a distinct dislike for stairs, there ... read more

Surprisingly we both slept well. I got up early to ask about ferry times to Mykonos, as this was our planned first stop. Unfortunately, but luckily as it turned out, we just missed the ferry to Mykonos. The guy on reception said to come back and see him at nine o'clock and he would send us to a friend of his who sold cheap ferry tickets. We went to Adrianos Travel and learnt that if we had have caught the ferry to Mykonos, our further travel plans would have been limited as it isn't the peak season and therefore not all of the ferries run. The guy who served us was really nice, and we ended up booking our whole week of travel including accommodation. We think we got a really good deal, but I guess ... read more

We had to set the alarm, as we had to finish seeing the sights of Athens before we caught the bus to Litohoro. Breakfast was an apple, I really miss my regular breakfasts already. The plan was to go to The National Archaelogical Museum which is regarded as one of the world's best museums. The guy on reception gave us directions, but we still needed help in finding it, but in Athens this isn't a problem. The history in the museum is amazing. I love my history, and there is so much to read that we resorted to taking photos of the historical information so we could stick to our tight timeline. The marble and stone artefacts were the highlight for us, and while the gold, bronze and vase exhibitions were interesting they didn't compare as ... read more

We didn't get up and going until 9.30, but when we walked outside our hotel we could see The Acropolis and Parthenon. We checked a menu for breakfast, but it didn't look that promising so we settled on fruit from the market which looked very fresh. Then we headed up towards The Acropolis. It was easy enough getting to The Acropolis, although we did take one wrong turn, but actually getting inside was another matter. The first time we were turned away at the gate because we had to take our backpack back down to the cloak room. The second time was because we simply didn't have tickets! There was a ticket booth about 50 metres away from the gate, and after the exchange of money for tickets we were in. There is a bonus that ... read more

Since I looked after myself yesterday I was up early, and went to the gym which made me feel good about myself. Today we leave for Athens, and we will be in Greece for eleven/twelve days. It didn't take long to pack, as we are only taking 2 backpacks (1 big, 1 small). We had to wash some clothes as well, and after two trips to the laundromat dryer the clothes were nearly dry. We said goodbye to Kez, having said goodbye to Rod earlier, and we were off. Missing the 12.57 train wasn't a good start, but we had plenty of time an the 13.16 was fine. We changed at West Ham, and then Green Park before arriving at Heathrow right on 15.00. Beck somehow slept on the train with her head in the most ... read more

April 1st, 2006, Day 86 of our cruise of 105 Athens, Greece Our arrival was delayed this morning as we had to make way for the ferry traffic. Out by 9:30, shuttle bus to the subway, 0.70 Euro and 20 minutes later, we were in the Plaka. The Plaka is the old part of town at the bottom of the Acropolis. The Acropolis is 230 feet high and quite a challenging climb. The sightseeing all the way up, at the summit and during the descent was spectacular. Our ex-friend Robin then brought me up the next hill to get a good view of the first one! That would be the Filopapou Hill and a great viewing spot for the Parthenon. I wish I could have seen it at night all lit up from that spot; we ... read more

Thessaloniki was okay, but with the dreary day, exhaustion of carrying around my bag all over, and overdoing it with the desserts (thus, not feeling so hot... in addition to trying to kick the remnants of a cold), my expectations of Athens had kind of dimmed. This morning, I peaked outside and found crystal-clear blue skies... not a cloud ANYWHERE! :) And the weather was about around 60 degrees (this was about 8 AM). That was a good start. I took a taxi to the subway and then set out for the Accropolis. I exited the subway and after about 50 yards I caught the first glimpse of it on a hill way above me... and it kind of took my breath away (and, believe me, I'm not in to artificially building this kind of stuff ... read more

Hi all. Hope you are managing to keep up with our travel journal, & that it hasn’t been too much information for you just yet. We just returned last night from Greece, & although it was a bit of a cold trip (the weather was nice & sunny but the wind was a bit cold), we had an excellent time. We didn’t confine ourselves to Athens specifically, although we never really got out of Southern Greece. It was the kind of trip we really needed - to get out of dark rainy London in the wintertime, & I think Vaughan especially enjoyed the break from work. While he is back at work today, I have a break for the rest of the week, while school is out for mid-term, & it gives me a bit of ... read more

Crazy damn Aussie!! (In an american accent) I cruised off the road in my scooter, down an embankment, through some trees and hit the skids & come to a stop at the edge of a drop off into the sea! Pretty nice beach down there lasds! We ( 2 american lads & a canadian guy) decided to go to an island off athens for the day to go exploring. So we cought the ferry over to Aegina Is ( 1 of those hydro foil boats that sit up above the H2O) We got there & had some grilled octopus & a beer then hired scooters. We cruised road the island, lovely scenery, not a cloud in the sky, crystal clear H2O, the coast road, an awesome bakery, the temple of athina, mono's, burnouts & general crazy ... read more
