Sitting on the roof of the hostel with the Acropolis right in front of me havin a beer, olives & feta watching a shit hot sunset, awesome! After a 30 hr boat cruise (this ship was huge, bars, restaurants, a disco & an empty pool!) & a 3 hr bus trip I finally got into Athens. But the metro had just stopped @ 12 so I had to get a taxi but the driver didn’t really know where to go and had no English. So he dropped me closish to the hostel & after a bit of walkin about I got there and finally a shower and a bed, yer! I stayed in the Athens Backpackers & it was a top hostel, run by Greek aussies, a bar, kitchen, free breky, data projector for movies ... read more

After Delphi, it was a quick drive back into Athens. We decided we better put the hotel Ionis behind us and try a hotel in the Plaka which one of Mau's former students recommended(will explain soon), The Central hotel. Guess what happened as we were trying to get to the hotel in downtown Athens? Thats right! We got lost again. The damned one-way streets leave little room for error, and after missing the correct turn it took us twenty minutes to get back on track. We eventually got to the hotel and checked in. The Central hotel was a big step up from the Ionis: better location; newly remodeled; much cleaner; etc... That night we enjoyed a nice Continental dinner at a nearby chic restaurant, where our server was a German woman who spoke better English ... read more

Back to Athens........ From Santorini, we returned to Athens and the Hotel Ionis for one night of rest before our mainland road-trip. While M&M found the steam to venture out to the Psiri district and hear some 'bouszouki' music until the wee-hours, We stayed in and watched 'Pretty Woman' and 'Carlito's Way.' After learning of M&M's late-nite adventures over breakfast we checked out of the hotel and into our new rental car. It was supposed to be a Volvo, but we ended up with a European manufactured Ford sedan, the Mondeo. We packed the trunk with all of our luggage and headed out of the city towards the giant port of Pireaus. Although Pireaus is not very far from Athens, it does have it's own very distinct personality. An old port city, Pireaus has been around ... read more

Well, well, well! We're back!! Thought we we're done for good? Nah!!! We've just been travelling and collecting more material to blog about in the near - or distant - future. So then, where were we? Last we came around we had just finished a fantastic trip to Turkey; an unexpected one, which has proven to be one of the better visits of our trip. Now, after departing the heavily guarded Istanbul airport we landed in Athens, Greece on Wednesday December 21st. Not long before, we had expected to meet Julia's parents - Mauricio and Meris - in the city that day. But, due to some unforseen issues, their departure was delayed a day. Thus, we were alone in the city that day, but, with a hotel room waiting for us - nice!! After a quick and ... read more

These are pictures from my last day in Athens. I didn't have any problems throughout my stay in Athens until it came time to get to the airport. And here you thought I wasn't going to have any stories to tell! I headed out early in the morning to go to the top of the Hill of the Muses, then I checked out of my hostel, and went to the Metro station to catch my train to the airport. Now, before I left London, I made sure to get directions and info about the airport so that I would kind of know where I was headed when it was time for me to leave. I was flying easyJet and they are notorious for flying into obscure airports that aren't actually the main airport serving the city. ... read more

Today was a wasted day. None of the archeological sites were open. None of the shops were open. So mostly, I played on the internet after sleeping in late. I was going to try to go to Korinthos and explore the ruins in and around the city--but again, ruins qualify as archeological sites and would have been closed. Ruins aren't nearly as exciting from afar. Decided not to spend the money to get there, just to turn around and come back. Instead, I took the Metro to Pireas--a whopping 0.70 Euro expenditure--and found a cafe in which to have lunch. Service was poor and food wasn't that great, but it was in Greece near the ocean so it worked out just fine. On my walk back from the cafe, I went into the only open place ... read more

So, my worries about traveling alone for the first time have been lessened because of Greek hospitality. On the 29th of December, I took the bus to Delphi, where I stayed overnight (1 night). Delphi is one of the most beautiful places that I have been to. It is way up in the mountains, and the setting seems perfect for where the ancient Greeks placed the Oracle. The day I arrived, I was too late to go to the archaeological site and museum, so I did what I always do in Greece at such a time - wander, eat and shop! I walked to areas where I could sit or stand and just take in the scenery, especially to watch the sunset. Later that night, around 8 pm, I felt famished and went to this little ... read more

Enjoy the beautiful pictures of the city! Mary P.S. I apologize for the many entries you're going to receive from my trip over Christmas. I finally sat down and got all the pictures uploaded and everything written and now that I've got it done, I don't want to wait to send out some of the entries. I hope to get my Lisbon pictures up very shortly so you can expect another entry from me when that happens. Enjoy the pics and let me know how you're doing!... read more

So, here I find myself in another of the world's great ancient cities, Athens, Greece. I apologise in advance...the spelling in this is terrible. Anyway, I arrived on Boxing Day and of course, as I much expected, all of the tourist sites were closed. However, most shops and tavernas were open, so I ate and shopped all day! Well, first I walked all around the city centre (thanks Lonely Planet for the guided walking tour map). I found my way from Syntagma Sqaure all the way to the Acropolis. In Syntagma Square, there was a festival happening...I initially thought it was just for Boxing Day, but it has continued the rest of this week so far. It must go on until New Year's. There is a merry-go-round for the kids, and a little village set up ... read more

Well when the opportunity arose for me to join my friends in Athens for Thanksgiving I of course jumped at the chance! Abby is studying there for the semester and Amelia, coming from Rome, Ali, coming from Amsterdam, and I all converged upon her and her fair city for four glorious days of fun. It was a very mellow adventure full of long chats and exploring the city, oh, and the food, how could I forget the food! Thursday was spent traveling to Athens and inside because of rain and wind but we ate our first gyros and Greek salad so the night was far from a waste. Not quite the usual Thanksgiving feast but I was warmed by being with my good friends and found myself at home in a very foreign place. Friday we ... read more
