I have no idea how I actually get anywhere, really. I left Toronto and flew to Vienna and then to Athens. In the Vienna airport I thought this won't be too bad - most the signs were in German but the odd one in English - and numbers aren't hard to read anywhere you go...I have a seat by the gate I am supposed to go through, it is the right one, I checked twice. I hear an announcement which sounds something like my flight being called and the couple next to me, also going to Greece, start to make their way to the gate so I follow. Two lines, I jump in one, pass through passport control, flight attendants x2, so my boarding pass has been checked three times. I get to the door leading ... read more

We spent all night on a most uncomfortable bus riding from The Pink Palace hostel on Corfu Island to Athens, Greece. My knees suffered from the sumo wrestler look-alike in front of me that pushed the reclining seat feature to its limits as he snored peacefully through the night. I had injured my neck earlier, having crashed into Bryan while body surfing a big wave, and found it impossible to find a comfortable position. Although Bryan managed to sleep a little bit, he readily agreed with my complaints as we waited outside a mini-market at 4:00 AM in the morning on those that needed a potty break. We arrived in downtown Athens at about 7:00 AM and our first priority was to find some strong coffee and breakfast. We walked several blocks before finding a little ... read more

August 18, 2006 Oh boy I am three days behind in my blog. There is a lot to write about. Let's begin with last Friday. My sister slept at my aunt's house last Thursday night because my uncle arrived with his Romanian guests at his condo. My mom took off to Mina's house earlier on Thursday. She came to pick her up and take her to a more northern part of Greece where she lives. On Thursday night ( I just realized now that I was supposed to talk about Friday and not Thursday - whatever, change of plans). My sister, my son, and I all slept in the same double bed. We basically did not have room to even turn. My son was in the middle and took turns cozying up with the rest of ... read more

August 17, 2006 Today I woke up really early and kept my aunt company before leaving for work. I actually woke her up an hour after her alarm went off and she was grateful that I shook her out of her ZZZs. My son ate really well - two eggs, a yogourt, and a glass of milk. After eating with him I decided to surprise him by taking him to Jumbo - the equivalent of Toys R' Us here in Greece. We were looking to replace a small submarine which he broke earlier this week, but unfortunately they were all sold out. I didn't want to disappoint him so I bought him a small metal airplane which he loved. He now has almost a dozen airplanes. After Jumbo we headed off to another toy store which ... read more

August 16, 2006 Yesterday we went on a day trip to Oropos. My aunt Thalia woke up at 5AM to cook spaghettis and to prepare. I woke up two hours later and after a short while we took off. It was a really nice day and since it was morning it wasn't too hot. Our first stop was at the bakery in Oropos where we ordered tiropites for all - they were awesome. Then my aunt drove us to a secluded beach called Meteora. The footpath towards the beach was semi-tortuous, but everyone managed to handle the steep descent. We found our spot and we dipped into the cool waters right away. Adriano could not stay out of the water and he had a great time. He was so excited to find and collect some sea ... read more

Well, my Greek odyssey may have only been for 9 days (not nearly enough), and not 20 years, but I did manage to get my fill of Greek mythology and Greek food! I saw what I consider to be the 3 big ones - The Acropolis, Delphi (centre of the universe) and Mt Olympus (seat of the Gods). See blogs parts 2 and 3 for stories of the latter 2 visits. Athens - what can I say? The world's ugliest city? Can't say I have ever seen such a messy sprawl of concrete that never seems to end. It is not dirty and it is not nasty, just plain ugly. On the positive side, it has a very clean and efficient metro train system, and, of course, the Acropolis. What a fantastic place! I got to ... read more

August 15, 2006 Most institutions were closed today. My sister went to the National Archaelogical Museum of Athens really early in the morning. I was actuallt supopsed to go with her, but my aunt wanted me to go to Church with her. We then met at my uncle's condo later on for a special feast to celebrate the Ascension day. After a while I left with my aunt and my son. We stayed awake the entire afternoon looking at pictures, which my son loved to watch. He was asking a lot of questions about the various relatives in our family. He also played a lot with his toy planes and read the book I got him about the Acropolis. My son always has this studious side to him and I like that. The afternoon just flew ... read more

You know you are a backpacker when: -You think..."maybe if I write a book about my travels, I will become financially free, and continue my exploration of the world!" I think this is every backpacker's dream! Ok, so yes, Greece was about 3 months ago, but I can still recall it vividly because it was just THAT INCREDIBLE! I have been fortunate to visit many visually striking countries, and I am happy to announce that Greece has successfully made the cut! It is MAGNIFICENT! We arrived to Athens around midnight and had a 6-hour layover before our flight to Santorini the next morning (one of the Cycladic Islands). Our girls from home (Alissa and Kristi) were meeting us in Santorini, but had one night in Athens as well...so, we thought to ourselves...hmmm, hang out at the ... read more

August 14, 2006 Yesterday was a relaxation day considering all the walking we did at the Parthenon. Started my day late and started my day searching for breakfast. Walked to Agios Efstathios Plaza in search of a baker that was first of all open and second that made tiropites (cheese pies) or kimatopides (meat pies). Most of them were closed due to the Acsension holiday. My son also wanted these tasty little snacks and went hunting with me. Then we found one open and we were so excited until the owner informed us that he had sold out everything in the first ninety minutes of opening time. We kept on searching until all stores were covered. I did discover two new internet cafes though that were much closer than the joint we normally visit and they ... read more
