We are in southwest Germany visiting our niece Megan who is stationed in the army at Ramstead Army Base. We are enjoying the chance to visit with her since we haven't seen in in a year. She has wireless in her apartment - horray!! So we can do a travel update. We last talked to you from Prague. Since then we have seen much better weather - warm and sunny days. Because we are pretty far north it stays late past 10 PM in the evening so lots of time to do things. After leaving Prague we drove across Germany to Cologne and Essen. Cologne - Beautiful city which I fell in love with immediately. Had some difficulty finding our camp ground due to a road blocked for construction, but well worth it once found. The ... read more

Guten tag. I am here! The games start in less than 12 hours! I am a very overpriced hostel and about to go to the airport to collect my brother and friends Jeff and Cory. As a result, this entry is going to be quite short, and I just know I'm going to forget something. Still, you'll get the picture. Travel update: The past days I've been in Bologna, Italy except yesterday I trained to Venice then bussed to the airport then flew to near Frankfurt then bussed to Frankfurt proper. I will be running around with my brother and friends in a matter of hours! Tales: After Venice, I to a train with Laura to Bologna. The town houses the oldest university in Europe dating back to the 11th century. It is well known for ... read more

VIDEO-"It’s My Life" waiting for the match VIDEO-"Das Deutschland Lied" VIDEO-Lahm Tor! the ... read more

Some people think football is a matter of life and death. I don't like that attitude. I can assure them it is much more serious than that. Bill Shankly, In Sunday Times (UK) Oct. 4 1981 Kaan refused to sleep today. He finally took a one-hour nap when he was so exhausted that he just fell asleep instantly when he blinked. He just couldn't open his eyes again for an hour. But when he did, he was ready to go again. Why, you ask? The World Cup!! Soccer chocolates Everything here is soccer right now. Soccer shirts, soccer balls stuck on bank windows, soccer truffles. Unless you live in a cave (or in the US, which has other priorities), you know that the World Cup began today and is being hosted by Germany. The first game ... read more

A couple of weeks ago as I read through an ESPN article handicapping the World Cup, it occured to me that a tournament of this magnitude (a true GLOBAL tournament) can only be analyzed in one way: THE WOMEN. That´s right, I SAID it. Having "gotten around" a bit this past year, I feel I am quite up to speed on recent "developments" in most World Cup countries, so allow me to make you some money (well, that is if you decide to join Sportsbook.com through my site) and predict the WHOLE Cup, from beginning to end, based on each COUNTRY´S "cups". ALL puns are intended, see if you can catch them all. Group A: GERMANY, COSTA RICA, ECUADOR, POLAND Commentary: Tough to deny the host nation (as I learned shortly after arriving at Inky´s flat), ... read more

Well, yesterday we had the great pleasure of seeing the mighty Socceroos...sorry QANTAS Socceroos play against the might of Liechtenstein. Althought the score was 3:1, Australia scored all 4 goals. There must have been atleast 1,000 Aussies there which was kinda weird because Ulm is such a small town. Of the ones we talked to there seemed to be a fairly even mix of those who live in Germany, those who are backpacking around Europe and those who were there just the World Cup. Kristian and I donned some green and gold face paint, and bought some Aussie flags. Anja became an honourary Australia for the game and even let me paint a small Aussie flag on her cheek. She was a bit confused about the whole Jumbuck in a Tuckerbag thing though. Actually as a ... read more

It took a while, but I think I´m finally "balls-deep" in the World Cup (no pun intended). Touching down in Cologne this past Wednesday, I was working on my 53rd failed attempt to call my host and friend, nowhere to be found for the always-elusive airport pickup. When you dial a wrong number or get an automated voicemail in Germany, the German message is basically the same, at least to my Deutsche-challenged arce, so I couldn´t tell if I was dialing the area code incorrectly or if they wanted me to deposit 2 more Euros for the first 5 minutes of my phone sex call. But right when I was about to hit the road with a "Will Blog for Bed" sign, the travel gods apparently sent their own, as I caught a glimpse of a ... read more

Made it to our final destination after being eaten alive by mosquitos last night (our windows were open). My face is covered in bites and it looks and feels like I have chicken pox. Our alarms went off at 3:45am and we all jumped up to get to the water taxi. We got to the airport early so we had our 800th cup of cappuccino while we waited for our check-in window to open. I think the flight company was called Condor Flurgenhurgen (not even close on the 2nd word that's just what we've been calling it). After going through security and finally being called to board we walked down a long hallway and a few flights of stairs and ended up at a bus. We thought maybe flurgenhurgen was german for "magical flying bus" (like ... read more

i still cannot escape the 'second stop symthom', although paris is really a fasinating city, i still felt lack of security. 因為慕尼黑旅舍早已爆滿,想起04年到過附近的Augsburg(離慕尼黑約半小時車程),感覺甚佳,因此這一段我選擇住在Augsburg。 today morning, i checked out at 8 a.m. and walked towards the metro station, and the gates just kept closed down! i walked along the street heading Paris Gare du Nord, hoping to get on a taxi, but unsuccessed. finally i asked a woman by the bus stop (she spoke fluent english!), she taught me to take a bus. but the bus suddenly changed it's route (maybe because of the traffic jam), i missed the best chance to get off to run into the north station, instead it took me to the east station, by the time of gettig off, i had already cried out at least thee f__k s. luckily when i stepped ... read more
