We got up, and after a delightful breakfast of toast and granola, we took the metro back to the Central Station to get a train to Dusseldorf. The trains were once again great, and we actually took a train back to Amsterdam since it was a connection to Dusseldorf. During the ride, we watched a pair of girls get busted for not having a ticket, then have a Dutch women talk the train attendent into letting them go. Where were the Italians to help me get out of my ticket in Florence... NO WHERE, thats where. Just beware that if you do travel here, they do check tickets ALL the time, and you shouldnt try to get away with anything. On the train we sat with an older American women who talked about a bunch of ... read more

OK, boys and girls, lets take out our maps of Europe and review the journey so far. On the far right, you’ll find the Black Sea. Just to the left of it, you’ll see Romania. Now keep your finger going left thru Romania, Bulgaria, Serbia, Croatia (if your map says Yugoslavia, throw the map out…..like the Yugo in the USA, that country does not exist anymore), Hungary, Slovakia (remember those countries that start with “SL” and end in “IA”), Czeck Republic (another reason to throw that map out is if its still shows Czechoslovakia) and finally Germany (which has been one big united country since 1990…so if the map shows 2 Germanys…again toss it out….tho I did like the East German national anthem). Right now, I’m in a city called Gorlitz which probably is not on ... read more

What is a holiday? Seems like a simple question, doesn't it? If you're British, it's what we Americans call a "vacation" - a trip somewhere that usually includes a beach and/or mountains and/or family. The other definitions, which come from the old English for Holy Day, have to do with days on which most people (excluding doctors, taxi drivers, and mothers) get the day off from work or school. A day which one can spend at leisure, the dictionary suggests. In that case, Germans get more holidays than they can keep track of. Bavarians get even more. We certainly chose the right place to live in! In 2006, in January, there were of course New Years' Day and Three Kings Day. By the end of January, Bavarians hadn't had any more holidays than Americans. February and ... read more

After an uneventful flight back to Cairo, we took solace in the knowledge that we'd only be in Egypt for a day and a half. Coming back actually proved to be fairly hassle-free, a combination of Cairo's relative laidbackness and good luck. However, our return did provide us with a couple of classic Egyptian exchanges. First, when we got to the airport, we couldn't find the bus stop. We went back inside to ask at the information desk. It went something like this: "Go outside and there's a sign for where to wait." "Actually, we were just there and didn't see it. Where exactly is it?" "Well, maybe you should ask someone." "Um, OK." Even better was the customer service at the Egypt Air office. After we checked into the hostel, we realized that some things ... read more

I arrived in Gorlitz yesterday after about 7.5 hours on trains. I knew already that my hotel/pension didn't have room on the 10th, so booked myself into a renovated 1920s hotel which was quite nice.....and a bit pricy....for one night. I had a cab drop off the big heavy suitcase at the hotel/pension cause I sure didn't want to drag it around town on Sunday. After a 3 star breakfast, I walked back to the pension and dropped off the backpack and puter then set off exploring.....cause I could not check in til 2 PM. First place to visit was a garden where they replicated a some of the holy sites from Jerusalem....in a smaller scale. I'd say a bit underwhelming. Walking thru an area that badly needs to be restored, then thru a couple beautiful ... read more

Düsseldorf and Sylt 10 to 11 June 2006 On the Saturday we caught the Inner City Express train from Hamburg to Düsseldorf (for a bargain €96.00), and got there by mid-afternoon. We were on our way to visit the Daniels family. Mia and Peter are long time friends of Kai’s parents. We stayed with Jens, their son, who lives in the heart of the modern and lively Düsseldorf. That evening we had dinner at a lovely Italian restaurant by the Rhine, enjoying the food, drink, company and sun till 11pm. This area of recently reclaimed docks is becoming a central location for media and production companies. So it is a rather trendy and stylish place. Towards the end of the meal, Silke, Mia and Peter’s daughter joined us as well. She had just returned from ... read more

10th June Saturday. I wake up on the plane in Munich to see an absolutely beautiful sunrise. I was a little confused as to how to get to Kaiserslautern (will now be known as K-Town) and as it was so early in the morning and everything was closed I slept on a bench with my pack to cuddle. My ticket ended up costing me 79 Euros (bloody expensive) but the train was very comfortable and the scenery was very beautiful and green. The houses are very different to what I have seen on my travels so far, cute little white things with brown high pitched roofs, very village looking. When I arrived in K-Town I had a 20min walk with my pack and I guess 3 weeks of not using it really made a difference. I ... read more

Chalk one up for the home team. Using my non-fluent silence and Ecuador shirt to convince security I was lost and my family was already inside (I have a great puppy-face, ask my ex´s), Inky gets us into an already-jam-packed Fan Fest viewing area for the Germany-Costa Rica opening match as it was starting. Moments earlier, I had somehow managed to keep up with her on a borrowed bicycle, despite the height of the seat being more suited for Dirk Nowitzki than yours truly. Not exactly how I imagined the beginning of the World Cup going down, but we´re here. I learn a couple of German chants (on two occasions, Inky tells me to disregard what the friendly drunks are trying to teach me) and Deutschland prevails 4-2. The fans are surprisingly friendly despite my enemy ... read more

Guten tag my friends! Actually after just writing that I've experienced a blank on whether or not that really is the word for hello in German....oh well, lets just say it is! Okay, before I tell you about Berlin, I have to send out a huge sincere apology to the country of Belarus, as we completely missed it out of our blog, even though we stopped there for a night. So anyway, better tell you a bit about it, since nobody has ever heard of it, including us til we got there. Belarus used to be part of Russia, I think it was only in the 90's that it became recognised as a seperate country. Its currently run by a president who is said to be 'europes last dictator' not on the scale of hitler of ... read more
